Chapter 163: Chapter 163

I am surprised to see how far and complex their plan has come into already, and as we talk and plan I wonder what I could do from my side as well, and of course with so much excitement in the past hours and so many things to think about after such a short period I barely blink an eye and it is already morning once more, but even the sleepiness cannot slow me down today of all days.

Because today is the day I will be saving mother.

I am looking forward to this so much that I am actually at loss at what to do now, thought so much of rescuing her that I had yet to decide on a plan of action.

Plus Ethan brings up a valid point next, which is what we end up doing first:

"We need to warn them about the gates. About the Demon Lord’s possible involvement"

"Why? What difference does it make?"

"Because if we are correct they are only cleaning after a storm that is still brewing, and perhaps we can convince them to help us since we do not have enough forces here on the main continent to stop or attack anything in cases of emergency, or even to save your mother."

That is a good point, if what all this is coming out to be is true and the Demon Lord is preparing for war against the main continent, we can expect an army stationary up above the High Lands, even if only made of traitorous griffins.

Thinking about it, and feeling as excited as nervous, not knowing what to expect and what we would find up there, I blindly follow Ethan as we walk towards the base of command were the strong old man with a stiff leg is talking with the group that will be going down today, leaving as we arrive to speak with him.

"Good morning Major Benedict, we have to speak with you, is a matter of great importance." He raises his eyebrow, pulling at the wrinkled burned skin.

"Is that so now? So early in the morning already? Very well, let’s have a sit now and eat while we talk." We don’t go far as he limps his way to a more open tent on the side where a big table is set, and with no possibility of raining inside a cave the tent is there more to give the ones inside some privacy, especially depending on the subject of the talk at the table.

Right now there are only very few people around, the morning workers filling their stomachs with the fuel needed for the day that would come.

We first go through the table where the food has been set, part of the table turned to the outside with the magical creatures portions in for the grab, and the human part towards the inside with bread and cheese and small things like that that made me wonder how they got food here since I could not see anything growing in such high and cold mountains... perhaps this people were bigger and far more organized than I had anticipated.

Which would be good news, if they accepted our proposition of joining forces.

With some apples and bread in front of me we settle down in a more private corner, but most people there just grab their food for the go so the place is actually pretty empty.

"Now now what it is so important that could not wait?" The Major asks while grabbing a toast to eat from his plate.

Ethan glances at me before saying: "Those gates... I think I know what they are and, if I am correct there is much more behind this than just some strange dangerous dungeons that popped up."

The Major listens quietly as Ethan talks, and it is hard to tell what he is thinking with his expression alone, the poker face a result of years of experience plus the scarred face.

"We are led to believe that the current demon Lord has a hand in this situation." Ethan then lets the information sink in before continuing and yet there is no reaction at all.

"You knew about it, didn’t you?" I say when there is no surprise in his features at all.

He finishes eating what he has in his mouth before saying with a grim that pulls at his wounds. "Well, knowing is not the word I would use, but you have seen the door, how can one not suspect the devil themselves? Though I still had hopes..."

"Hopes?"

"Yes, that this would not escalate to another war against them, not when humans are so... far apart. We are not ready to engage in war united as one like we used to, but I guess I should not have good expectations for this mess when you two are here with such grim faces..."

The weight of our next words increases with perhaps the fate of many lives in the balance, this growing bigger than just mother and I.

"I’m afraid so." Says Ethan as he explains what we thought might happen given the Demons Lord’s power, but all without giving away Ethan’s lineage and covering all up with his cultivator’s trips to the island, giving a half true instead of a complete lie.

Ethan clenches his fist on the table as he has not touched the food so far, unable to stomach it as he says to the Major with a very serious face:

"The Demon Lord is an evil force that grows every day, if we let things be and go the way he wishes we will all face the consequences of ignoring it, and let me tell you, I dare not think the tremendous consequences and at the end of it all there may be no one left to opposite him later on."

Cutting the evil by its root, otherwise the weeds may overtake everything and a simple task becomes an impossible one, well, at least in theory in this case since it does already seem to be very improbable as is.

"The thing is, we will need to join forces to fight this evil back, the more the better, but still I’m not sure if it will be enough." At that point when we are pointing the bitter point of this troublesome situation, a new voice comes from behind us.

"Ah, we may be of assistance to you all."
