The Bee Empire was growing stronger and stronger by day. I really had nothing to worry about here—our development points alone were the proof.
Large military, incredible logistics growth, wellness at its peak—humans would find no weaknesses there!
I smiled to myself.
Now I only had to wait for the enemies to come, and they didn't disappoint.

Early next morning, the bees that watched the surroundings of Hive Rich from high above reported a sight of the humans in the distance.
I immediately gathered the local Council.
"Mobilize the army, Bloodimina!" I commanded. "Spread it around the forest on the way of the giants and hide under the tree canopy. We will attack humans from ambush and destroy them before we will even need anything else!"
"Yes, Father!"
"I will go with you. Regalia, stay safe and do the same with your Council."
My princess nodded regally. Unlike Hammerwork, who pouted at my words, Regalia clearly had no desire to leave her hive, even to kill things.
"I will, Father, and I know that you and Bloodimina will kill these monsters with great violence."
"Exactly. Stay safe, everybody!"
The soldiers needed no time at all to prepare, and I only needed to put on my armor and grab my golden spear. Soon, they flew out to take their ambush positions in a forest around 500 meters from the hive.
Which was too far from the ballistas for my liking, but thanks to all the trees the bees cut for wood, there wasn't enough cover closer than 500 meters to Hive Rich!
"Let's just say that this is good enough," I told Bloodimina as we sat under a fern tree.
Other bees spread all around us. Obeying their Commander's orders, they spoke in whispers and flew around as little as possible. They huddled behind trees and on the underside of large leaves, only daring to peek out.
And, of course, no drum signals—only a dozen messengers ready to pass over Bloodimina's orders.
"I've read reports about your last fight with the green giants, Father. Beemarines are ready to use the same tactics we used to defeat them before," Bloodimina said.
I nodded.
"It should work. If it won't… Well, that's why I'm here."
We waited in silence for some time until the tremor of the ground beneath my feet made me jolt.
Around us, the trees shook, too. First a little, then more and more.
"Footsteps!" I whispered, raising my head over the leaf to look into the distance.
I saw humans immediately, and again was struck by how alien they looked. Thin plates of soft green chitin, noseless faces, bug-like mouths and hook-like fingers. They were more bug-like than bees, despite having fewer limbs!
Their clothing and gear didn't look much different from the ones I've seen before—at least from what I could see from my position close to the ground. These people could be trappers, although their numbers suggested they were searching for their dead friends.
'Although if this was the case, isn't it a bit too late since they went missing? Perhaps they heard about the gold somehow… I wish I knew more.'
Several hundred meters away from us, the humans stopped, and one of them pointed toward Hive Rich. He said something in alarm.
"The guy must've noticed the skeletons," I muttered to myself and Bloodimina. "Let's wait for them to come investigate."
They approached together for 200 more meters, before three people split up from the main group.
The trio slowly walked toward the skeletons, looking around all the while. One of them pointed toward Hive Rich—but right now, all the non-soldiers were hiding inside.
If they went toward the hive or the skeletons, they were going to walk right past the ambushing army—the best outcome for us.
I clenched my spear tighter and waited, waited…
Suddenly, another thing alerted the humans, making them point fingers and loudly talk again.
The train tracks!
Those were coming to another side from Hive Rich. As the humans made their first step toward them—each spanning dozens of meters—I realized that if they went there, they will walk right past my ambush.
"Dammit. Fine, no way about it. Bloodimina, command attack as soon as enemies will be in range—and make sure nobody gets stepped on!"
With this command, I flew out of my cover. Of course, my bodyguards followed.
"Father!" Bloodimina gasped. "Yes, Father!"
Sun made my polished dragon scale armor gleam, and my bodyguards spread around me, immediately understanding what I was up to.
"HEY, UGLY BUG BASTARDS! YOU CAME TO KILL US, I BET? THEN COME HERE!"
"You heard Father," Destroyer said. "All repeat—UGLY BASTARDS, COME HERE SO WE CAN DESTROY YOU!"
Whether our voices carried far enough for the giants to hear, or they noticed my shiny armor, but they stopped and turned to me with loud clicking noises—I was ready to bet that they were surprised!
But then, they surprised me by pulling something that looked awfully like bug-catching nets out of their shoulder bags.
With those nets at the ready, they walked right toward me!
