Chapter 402: Not a trip goes without being attacked!

The human soldiers had a lot of thoughts about these dragons, for sure.

’Vicious beasts, not at all like normal chickens and ducks! Even rabid animals aren’t as bad. These are demons in disguise! I pray for the souls of those whom they have killed—what if these demons snatched them with their teeth?’

’Normal chickens eat seeds, insects, grass... meat sometimes, alright. But these are predators! Absolute predators!’

’Their bodies should be burned after death so they wouldn’t rise from the dead and hunt even more people. If they could be burned at all... And they definitely shouldn’t be eaten. Their meat will be cursed.’

My Agents shared less superstitious and more relevant information. For example, they noted that these dragons weren’t at all scared by humans, unlike most beasts in presence of the giants like them. And while the chickens were picked from a domesticated breed, the ducks were captured in the wild.

The Agent also told about the traps used to capture all these dragons: they had to have been very elaborate, because the beasts avoided simple snares that were enough to capture most dragons.

While I listened to reports, the dragon I arrived on and its rider fed on the bread given to it by the human soldiers. My squad ate honeyed jerky we brought with us.

The caged dragons watched this in agitation and envy. They hit the bars of their cages again and again, and I heard their thoughts. The beasts were angry and hateful to the extreme.

’Die! Die! Die!’

’Hungry... I will kill you all! I will drink your blood! Eat your meat!’

’Eat! Die! Eat! Die! Meat!’

After listening to just a little of this, I blocked their thoughts away for my own sanity, and the rest of this break went relatively peacefully.

"Thank you for your hard work and this journey, Agent Convincing," I said, patting her head with a hand not sticky with honey. "I’ve learned what I could. Now I just want these creatures to die. Although it would probably be better to deliver them somewhere with Physicians for an autopsy, I will feel much calmer if they die here and now."

Agent Convincing blushed a little from my praise, then nodded.

"I understand what you mean, Father. Their thoughts are vile! Nobody in my squad wanted to listen to them, even just to guard them. I will give orders to slaughter them imme—"

A loud crash from the cages made everybody nearby turn their heads in this direction to see a duck bash its head into a wall of its cage so hard that several scales fell off.

"CRAAAAA!" it shouted in pain and anger.

I shuddered, but then relaxed—just like everybody else.

Although this looked alarming, the cages and their bars were thick and solid. There was no chance for the dragons to break them.

SLAM!

"Grawk-grawk-grawk-graaa!"

I jolted and looked toward the cages again. Around me sounded shocked gasps and alarmed shouts of humans. My black dragon let out a growl of alarm and flew into the sky—away from potential danger.

One of the chickens has opened the door of its cage and burst out, lunging right for a human sitting nearby and guarding it!

’How?!’ somebody thought loudly nearby. Perhaps that was myself.

"Protect Father!" Destroyer shouted. In an instant my bodyguards were in a protective formation around me.

"Aaaaaah!" the human who was so suddenly attacked cried in pain. He was too slow to get away from the attacking dragon and its teeth dug deep into the man’s arm.

Blood was gushing out of the wound—way more of it than was normal for a wound this size—and even I could see the terror on the man’s face when he looked at it.

The chicken-dragon let the man go and opened a bloody maw. I knew it was going to attack again...

’Hold yourself together! It’s just one dragon! Kill it!’ I transmitted mentally to everybody, and was the first one to aim and shoot my stinger-gun at the creature.

It was immune to venom, of course, but I just had to be an example.

〔You deal 1 damage.〕

The needle of my stinger was aimed at the dragon’s chest, but it turned sharply and it pierced its wing. It growled in protest, flapped its wings and half-lunged half-flew in my direction.

The dragon’s eyes were glassy and black, with nothing but rage inside of them.

A human tried to block the dragon’s way, but it ducked under his sword with fluid grace. The dragon’s wings let it cross the distance of several hundred meters between us within a blink of an eye.

’He’s venom-immune! Use fire!’ Destroyer ordered.

She and her sisters spat napalm at the approaching bird at once, but shrugged it off almost effortlessly just by closing its eyes. Its scales protected it from fire too well—it had several tiers.

Now the chicken-dragon was close enough that I could see every drop of human blood inside of its opened jaws.

’Die! Main bee! Die!’ I heard the beast thinking.

So this was an assassination attempt, now?

"Father!" Destroyer shouted in alarm. "Squad, we attack directly—aim for the eyes!"

"Screw this!" I shouted, raising my arms. "Everybody, scatter!"

Although I didn’t have my golden spear with me, the armor I was wearing—the special set made and decorated by the best craftsmen—still had golden cables inside running from my chest to my hands.

I could use them even without my spear.

Now that the beast was so close to me, and all the humans that were supposed to kill it still couldn’t catch up...

I raised my palm and dashed up with all the speed of my wings!

The dragon’s jaws snapped where I just was. All the bees scattered from the place like a school of fish from the shark.

Then I dove right back at the creature, charging an electrical strike.

"Let’s see how you are resistant to this, my future spicy wings bucket!"
