As soon as I leveled up, I didn’t hesitate to put all three stat points into my strength stat, pushing it back to the ten-point threshold.
Anyone could easily argue I should’ve put the points into my speed stat instead, but nothing pisses me off more than getting pushed around.
The image of that midget grabbing my shirt was still fresh in my mind.
Having someone less skilled than me treat me that way was really embarrassing.
Maybe that’s why I valued strength over speed.
I don’t like getting pushed around—and I’m not the type to run either.
With that done, my gaze lowered to the second most important thing I received from this side quest:
Valefor Talent List!
However, to my surprise, only one item was available—and it wasn’t cheap either.
[Magic Acumen] — Passive
Grade: SS
Cost: 15 Universal Fragments
Description: Grants the user the ability to learn magic.
I blinked repeatedly, wondering if my eyes were playing tricks on me.
Just that?
But then I remembered the spell used by the robed men. While it clearly took a toll on them and left them defenseless, its destructive power was unmatched.
One spell killed thousands.
"Purchase!"
[-15 Universal Fragments]
Ding!
[Magic Acumen Purchased Successfully!]
Clank!
My eyes rose above the system messages as I heard the sound of steel brushing against steel, approaching.
Looking over my shoulder, there were about three soldiers helping the pale-robed men forward.
These robed men had hoods draped over their faces, but from the color of their pale skin, it was clear they’d been drained dry by that spell.
Slowly, I turned to see about a dozen men behind them, shaking in their boots but still holding onto their weapons.
At first, I was going to lash out and ask if this was how they repaid my kindness—but the hole in my chest rendered the emotion meaningless, making me hesitate to act.
Reassessing the situation, I realized they were all scared.
Then I looked down at the puddle of blood beneath me.
Dark fumes constantly poured out of my body, while the black cracks that had started around my eyelids had stretched across my face—threatening to spread down my neck if allowed to fester any longer.
’Strange. My powers were never like this before. If this is the price I have to pay for less than one percent corruption, what would happen if my soul is completely corrupted?’ I couldn’t help but wonder.
"Great Traveler..." an elderly voice stole my attention, and I looked up.
It was the man who cast the spell—the one the flag bearers helped before he could fall off his horse.
I tilted my head to the left while peering deep into the hood that hid his face.
Upon noticing it, the man and the other robed figures pulled down their hoods, revealing their faces.
The one at the forefront was an elderly man with gray hair and thick gray beards.
He reminded me of the archmages I’d see in cartoons and movies—the kind that lived in seclusion inside a tower.
Behind him were two more:
One was a girl with unique purple hair that seemed natural, since her eyebrows and eyes had the same color. In that oversized robe, there wasn’t much I could tell about her except her pointy nose and the curious gleam in her eyes as she looked at me.
The other was a brown-haired man, tall and heavy like a warrior, but he had a timid nature. He didn’t dare meet my gaze, unlike his curious counterpart.
Whoosh!
The dark fumes escaping my body vanished as I deactivated Berserk Mode, and the black cracks across my face began to recede—though slowly.
Ding!
[Information Acquired]
[Name:] Luthor Landor
[Race:] Human
[Post:] Field Arcanist
[Stats:]
Strength: 2
Speed: 1
Vitality: 2
Intelligence: 5
HP: 2/5
MP: 0/7
Status: Casting a spell beyond his capabilities. At the cost of his health, his vitality and health decrease by one point each time. Once his vitality hits zero, he will die.
My eyes narrowed at the last part. I looked through his stats again, only to notice he had just 2 vitality left.
Does this mean the spell they cast earlier was far stronger than what his body could handle—even with the help of these two—so he used his life force to supplement what he lacked?
"Great Traveler..." Luthor called again, but I raised my hand to cut him off.
"Luthor..." I said his name, and the man shivered, his eyes widening with genuine shock.
But it wasn’t just him—everyone here was shaken by my words.
’How can a traveler like me know his name?’ I imagined their thoughts.
"If you overexert your soul two more times like this, you will die," I scolded the old man.
"You’re permanently damaging your life force with these reckless actions."
Buzz!
Everyone was shocked and looked at Luthor, but the man in question didn’t seem surprised by this revelation.
Instead, a bitter smile played on his lips, while a look of resolve remained in his eyes.
’He knows...’ My eyes narrowed at the realization.
"I appreciate your concern, Great Traveler. But what you deem reckless actions are a necessity—for me and my men.
If I do not do this, I will die either way," he said and lowered himself in a bow.
"This old man thanks you for your help and concern."
Slowly, everyone began bowing their heads, just like the Field Arcanist.
Suddenly, I was interested in this man’s story.
No—not just his story.
I had become curious about the Solinthar Empire.
"If you wish to thank me, then why don’t you share your burden with me?" I asked with a friendly smile.
Many heads snapped up, meeting my gaze, clearly shocked by my words.
"This traveler might be able to lend you a hand—if you’re willing to share your burden," I added.
