Chapter 149: Chapter 149

~ NYSSA

Eric and Jeremiah sat in the front while I stayed in the back, legs pulled up to my chest as we drove down familiar streets.

The pack was as it always was. I wasn’t sure why I expected there to be some kind of mourning sign, anything to show that they had lost an Alpha, but it was as if the world had moved on and Henry was no more than a name in the wind and a whispered memory.

"If you’re both with me," I began slowly. "Who is with Rowan?"

Eric and Jeremiah locked eyes for a moment before bursting into a fit of laughter. The response caught me off guard but I remain stoic, eyeing the both of them warily.

"Did I say something funny?" I asked, cocking my head to the side.

"That you think the King needs someone with him is laughable," Eric answered. "If there is anyone with him, it would be to make sure he doesn’t get pissed and kill everyone in there."

"He wouldn’t do that," I said quickly but when I locked eyes with the two of them through the mirror, I felt a stab of unease go through me. "He wouldn’t... right?"

"He shouldn’t," was all Jeremiah said.

"However," Eric continued. "We all know how much this pack pisses him off. The quicker we get out of here, the better for everyone involved."

We arrived at my house a few minutes later and I frowned when I noticed two guards standing outside my door, their hands folded neatly in front of them. They did not reach for their weapons as we stepped out of the car, but they did not have to. The weapons were on full display for us to see: knives at their sides and ankles.

"Why are they here?" Eric asked, but none of them answered.

We already had three guards follow us from the pack house. With two more, we were outnumbered.

Eric and Jeremiah walked on either side of me, both the epitome of ease but I could see the tension in their jaws and the tightness to their shoulders.

We walked past the guards, heading straight for the front doors and I stepped in first. The two men stepped in after me and held the door open for the pack guards.

Once two pack guards walked in, Jeremiah stepped into the doorway, blocking the others. "You lot wait outside."

They frowned. "The Alpha gave specific orders."

"I don’t give a fuck what orders your Alpha gave. We have orders of our own, and that is to protect our Queen. You can wait outside."

My cheeks warmed at the mention of the word ’queen’ but I didn’t have time to dwell on it because the wolves growled, reaching for their weapons immediately.

Eric pushed me behind him instantly, but he did not reach for a weapon, he merely crossed his arms over his chest, eyeing the two guards inside the house while Jeremiah faced the three outside.

"Attack first, I fucking dare you," Eric drawled, his voice laced with humor. "I’m looking for any excuse to knock someone’s teeth out."

The guards hesitated but did not sheath their weapons. "You are being difficult."

Eric shrugged. "If that’s what you want to call it sure, but all five of you aren’t coming in here. You can bitch about it to your Alpha if you want."

I eyed the guards and the clear power struggle happening in front of me.

While the wolves outnumbered the lycans, it was clear that if a fight were to break out, the lycans would take the upper hand and the wolves knew that because reluctantly, they sheathed their weapons, murmuring curses under their breaths as they did.

"Good," Jeremiah smiled, although it was too menacing to be called a smile. "You can keep guard outside."

He slammed the door in their faces before turning his attention back to the guards who were in the house with us.

They tried to appear unbothered but I could hear their hearts hammering in their chests and there was no mistaking the slight wobble to their knees as Jeremiah made his way over to them.

"Are we going to have any problems?" he asked and they shook their heads. "Good. I’ll stay down here with you while they go pack her stuff."

The guards glanced at me then back at him. "She is to be in our line of sight at all times."

"Unless you want to see me pack up my underwear, I don’t see why that’s necessary," I cut in. "But if you want to see it, feel free to join me."

Their cheeks flushed a bright shade of red and without a fuss, they lowered themselves onto the couch, hands clasped tightly in front of them.

I grinned.

Underwear was always a good way to get out of shit.

"We’ll be back," I said before heading down the halls towards my room.

Just before reaching my room, I took a turn, heading for my parent’s side of the house instead.

Once we were out of earshot, Eric turned to me. "You have enough shit at the palace to never use anything here again."

I didn’t bother arguing. "I do."

"Then why are we here? Be honest."

I turned to him slowly. "I’m hoping to find something on my parents."

"Find what? I could help you look. It would be faster."

I exhaled shakily. "That’s the thing, I don’t know what it is. All I know is that it has to be here. Anything that looks like a document, just hand it to me."

"You have to give me more than that, Nyssa," he frowned. "I need specifics." I chewed on the inside of my cheek, wondering if it was worth it. "Come on, Nyx, you can trust me, you know that."

I sighed. "Birth certificates. Anything that can tell if I’m their kid or not."

His brows knitted in confusion. "Why—"

"Please," I cut him off firmly. "Don’t ask."
