Chapter 61: Chapter 61

~ ROWAN

My mate moved in a daze, her eyes widened in shock and her mouth slightly agape.

Her steps were slow, as if unsure, but she finally made her way to me and the moment she was within reach, I grabbed her arm, pulling her tightly towards me.

"Once we get out of this room, you’re going to go home and pack your shit," I whispered to has as we walked down the hallway.

People stared from behind doors and corners, trying to figure out what had happened in the meeting room.

Neither Henry nor his people would be spreading rumors anytime soon. I made sure they’d gotten the message. However, I couldn’t ascertain whether or not they’d treat Nyssa like shit if I were to leave her here.

"Once you’re packed, stay in your fucking house until I come to get you, do you understand?"

She nodded dumbly. "You... I... thank you."

"Don’t thank me yet, little wolf, we still need to get you out of here."

She was still in shock, that had to explain why she wasn’t asking me more questions or trying to fight me.

I led her over to the car where Eric was standing. It was pitch black outside and there had to be more bugs than people, but he stood dutifully, his eyes tracking every move that Nyssa made.

"Is she okay?" he asked, immediately reaching out for her.

I let out a warning growl, not liking how easy it was for him to reach for my mate. His job was to guard her, not grab her like they were long time friends.

Thankfully, he was smart enough to retract his hand and bow in a non-threatening gesture.

I ignored him, making sure she was seated carefully in the car before forcefully pulling myself away from her.

I watched the car disappear down the street, and only then did I finally turn to Jeremiah.

"Round up all the guards," I told him. "We’re leaving."

He bowed low. "Of course, Your Majesty."

"Make sure nothing from that room gets out. I don’t want a single word of it making the rounds. I don’t want her involved."

The corner of his lips quirked slightly. "None of us will say a word."

He tried to hide his smile, but the more he did, the more he failed.

I didn’t blame though, mates were rare, especially for our kind, and I’d done everything to avoid her before now.

"No one can know that she is my mate."

At that, he smiled. "With all due respect, Your Majesty, everyone already knows. You don’t just put a guard on a random female. We were just waiting for the confirmation."

"Well waiting linger," I growled. "Where the fuck is my sister?"

"I don’t know. She was in the hallway with your... Nyssa. She must have left with the others."

"Well fucking find her. We need to leave as soon as possible."

I left him there, heading for the hotel to get clean.

I had a room at the pack house but the last thing I wanted was to encounter Henry again while tensions were high. He looked like he wanted to hit me in there. To be honest, I wanted him to.

I’d been looking for an excuse to beat the shit out of him for years.

Once I was clean, I grabbed my stuff and headed out the room only to bump into Aria at the bottom of the stairs, a deep frown on her face.

"Do I want to know what you did?" she asked and I shook my head. "Why are you always antagonizing him?"

"Trust me, I didn’t do shit this time. We need to leave."

"It’s dark."

"You’re a fucking lycan, you can see in the dark," I snapped. "Get in the car."

With a huff, she shoved her bag into the trunk and got into the passenger seat, slamming the door shut hard in protest.

I ignored her, focusing instead on driving to Nyssa’s house.

Despite having not visited, I knew where it was. It was the first thing I learned when I set foot in this pack.

I told myself that it was just to satisfy my curiosity, but I knew better.

"This isn’t the way out," Aria observed.

"I know."

"Rowan, what the hell is going on?"

I ignored her, pulling to a stop in front of Nyssa’s home. "Stay here."

I slammed the door shut, heading up the front steps.

It was a very simple house; with a top floor and a large window that overlooked the street ahead. The front door was locked... thankfully.

I would’ve lost my shit if she left it open after everything that happened.

"We need to leave, now!" I said, banging on the door.

There was movement behind the door followed by the sound of a lock turning. Nyssa stood on the other side of the door, her hands crossed over her chest.

She’d changed out of her earlier clothes into something more comfortable and her hair was braided over her shoulder.

She didn’t seem to be in much of a haze like before which had to explain why she wasn’t moving.

"Didn’t you hear me?" I asked. "We need to go—"

"I heard you, but I don’t know if I want to go with you."

It took a minute for her words to settle. "Are you insane? They’re going to throw you in a cell."

"I know that, but staying with you isn’t much worse. I’m not leaving one prison for another. I’d rather stay here knowing what I’m to face than go with you only to be treated like shit."

"I don’t have time for this."

She shrugged. "Then I’m not going."

She made to shut the door and I knew that she’d go through with it. She’d stay, knowing it spelt her own death just to prove a fucking point.

I’d never met a person as stubborn as her and yet I couldn’t walk away.

It was insane how quickly I’d gone from wanting her as far away from me as possible to wanting her close.

I had one minute to make a split second decision.

Grabbing her face in both hands, I pulled her into me and kissed her.
