Chapter 461: Chapter 76: New Mission

"Oh, Your Holiness, hello, hello," Aske said, though his tone did not carry any warmth, as if he were speaking to just another ordinary guest.

"Lord Aske," Innocent spoke, "this is our first acquaintance, and I hope under such circumstances, I have not presumptuously alarmed you."

"Not at all," Aske chuckled, "We are a professional mercenary group, best at handling all sorts of surprises."

"Indeed, from the records submitted by Raphael, even though The Azure Longsword Mercenary Corps was only established about a year ago, the tasks you have accomplished and deeds you have done are enough to make any mercenary group on the continent, even the Holy Temple Knights, feel ashamed," Innocent said calmly. "This is also why we have chosen to secretly contact you so abruptly at this time."

"The Church Court wishes to hire you, Lord Aske."

"Since it’s business, then let’s talk," Aske replied. "However, it cannot conflict with the mission we are currently undertaking. First come, first served, and then there’s the matter of keeping our word, which I believe you can understand."

"I understand," the Pope said. "So next, the task I want to give you is very simple."

"If you want to destroy the Salmatia, you should continue forward until you reach the energy room."

"However, I hope that before you destroy it, you can first guide the two demigods along the current route to the top floor, and ultimately obtain the intelligence in the conference room. Treat this intelligence as your spoils of war and present it to the Emperor waiting in the rear; then the task I have given you will be considered complete."

"And the reward?" Aske asked.

"The reward is that afterward, the Church Court’s forces will no longer attack your members," Innocent stated. "During the previous battle, we have already demonstrated our sincerity, haven’t we?"

So the Church Court’s forces refrained from attacking us before because of this conversation? Aske was somewhat tempted; after all, the intensity of the upcoming war was only increasing, and the value of this get-out-of-death-free card was quite nice.

However, he still tried to bargain: "Isn’t the reward a bit too little? Once we go back, as long as we choose not to go to the battlefield, then what difference does it make whether you attack us or not?"

"Do you think you would be safe hiding in the camp, Lord Aske?" Innocent’s tone carried a hint of faint disappointment. "Do you really think the Emperor’s Alliance can last to the end?"

"Perhaps it can, perhaps not," Aske replied. "But the Emperor is unwilling to withdraw, and we can leave at any time. After all, we’re just a mercenary group; there’s no need for us to fight to the death with your Church Court."

Silence fell on the other end of the communication, evidently reminding Innocent that in The Azure Longsword, there was a little girl named Mia with an extremely proficient "Shadow" ability in hiding and escaping; slipping away in the night would be all too easy. freewebnøvel_com

"Let’s do this," Innocent proposed. "Swap for an optional reward: 10,000 silver marks or equivalent advanced armament."

"Acceptable, how will it be delivered?" Aske inquired.

"After leaving the Emperor’s Alliance, you can come to Solomon City to collect it," Innocent replied craftily. "After all, you can leave anytime, can’t you?"

Aske fell silent for a moment.

"Alright," he agreed. "Anything else I should be aware of?"

"Hmm, in order not to reveal ourselves in front of the demigods, the armed forces within the Salmatia will still attack you as usual," Innocent explained. "So, be careful not to die, Lord Aske."

"We are a professional mercenary corps," Aske said.

"Let’s hope so," said Innocent as he ended the communication.

Aske pulled out his earpiece and snapped it into pieces, then joined the battle.

The firepower of these synthetic humans was formidable, and their reaction speeds and accuracy in shooting were enough to make any marksman blush with shame.

However, against two Physical Demigods who fully ignored the damage from firearms, their only fate was to be ruthlessly wiped out like cannon fodder.

It wasn’t just the shooting from physical bullets; high-frequency vibration swords, high-frequency lasers, unstable plasma, super high-temperature flames, anti-infantry landmines, anti-material rifles, and various other technological weapons were deployed in turns but failed to pose any threat to the two Physical Demigods.

With their level of physical power, they were virtually unscathed; if hit, attacks barely pierced their defenses, and even if their defenses were breached, their wounds would heal promptly. Unless a mass of drones or synthetic humans were to exhaust them to death... Of course, within the structure of the Salmatia, there wasn’t an environment suitable for such a siege.

Twenty minutes later, the group breached the stairwell.

"Should we continue forward, or go up?" asked Wilderness Bear Mason, looking towards War God Leopold.

"To destroy the Salmatia, the energy room should be on the lowest level," War God Leopold pondered. "Continue forward."

"How are we going to destroy the energy room?" Aske asked curiously.

"With explosives," Mason replied. "We brought military explosives."

"I thought you guys would just punch the nuclear reactor until it blew," Aske said with a laugh.

"Of course, that’s not possible," the two Physical Demigods said with exasperated expressions, "Even at the Demigod Rank, being buried under tens of thousands of tons of rubble would still be troublesome."

The girls also felt a thrill of fear at this thought—so even punching a nuclear reactor to explosion wouldn’t kill them, just bury them alive? The Demigod Rank really was invincible!

"So, after the energy room is blown up, the entire Salmatia will be reduced to ruins?" Aske asked. "Regardless of what valuable items or important intelligence might be on the upper floors, everything will be completely destroyed?"

"Yes," said Mason as a matter of course, and picking up on the implication in his words, Leopold added:

"That’s true. Anyway, it won’t take us more than a few minutes. Let’s go up first to see if we can find any unexpected gains."

"Good." Mason had no objections to his companion’s suggestion.

The group quickly rushed up the stairs, but as they turned the corner, they saw that the stairwell ahead was enveloped by a high-energy cutting laser that formed a sharp and deadly net that suddenly descended!

Leopold, at the front, let out a roar as he plunged his right hand into the wall beside him as easily as one would stab tofu with chopsticks.

Then, gripping the steel rebar within the wall, he yanked outward, warping and twisting the entire wall, damaging the embedded cutting laser emitters.

"Holy shit!" The girls stared in disbelief at the abnormal reaction.

"Let’s be more careful from here on out," said Aske, nodding to Leopold and addressing everyone. "The synthetic humans’ attacks can be blocked by our two Demigods, but we still need to avoid triggering these kinds of hidden traps, or at least dodge them in time."

"We’ll definitely be careful," the girls promptly declared, their spirits ratcheted up to the highest level. Mia, in particular, clenched her shadow ability in hand, ready to whisk everyone away into the Shadow Realm at a moment’s notice.
