Chapter 45: Meeting The Darkness

"Are you ready, my child?" A melodious voice echoed softly through the vast chamber of the palace, each word dripping with gentleness and warmth. "Are you ready to take the title of ruler?"

"Always, Mother," came the confident response.

Standing before a grand, ornate mirror, a young woman in her early twenties stared at her reflection with a mix of pride and determination. Her silver hair shimmered under the golden daylight, cascading like liquid starlight down her back. Her voice held strength as she continued, "I’m ready to be your successor."

Her radiant smile lit up the room, but her gaze was drawn to a massive blade displayed nearby, a weapon so striking it seemed alive. Ancient carvings adorned its surface, their meanings blurred and enigmatic. As Zara’s focus sharpened on the inscriptions, everything around her began to dim.

The light drained from the room. The air grew thick. The woman before her. once so graceful and composed. suddenly floated amidst a pool of blood. Her once soothing voice became an urgent whisper.

"Find me, Zara. Find me soon."

The words were like a dagger to her heart, and darkness swallowed everything.

Zara shot up from the bed, her chest heaving as if she’d been underwater for too long. Her wide eyes scanned the room, desperately grounding herself in reality. Trembling, she reached for the glass of water on the bedside table and gulped it down. The cold liquid steadied her, but her pulse continued to race.

"Damn... that was intense," she muttered under her breath, wiping the sweat from her brow.

She sat on the edge of her bed, her face drawn with exhaustion. Another cryptic dream. Another unanswered question. These visions were becoming a cruel joke. offering fragments of truth but no clarity.

She exhaled heavily. Yesterday’s chaos replayed in her mind like a broken record. The kings had announced the wedding, and the castle had erupted into celebration. Excitement buzzed in every corner as preparations began for what everyone called the grand union of the century.

But Zara? She couldn’t share their joy.

The idea of becoming their Luna felt like a chain around her neck, tightening with each passing moment. She knew the truth they didn’t: she didn’t belong here. This world wasn’t hers, and her stay was temporary. wasn’t it? She didn’t even know how she had arrived, let alone if or when she could leave.

And if she did disappear? If she vanished into thin air one day without warning? Would they grieve her like a lost love? Or would they curse her as some sort of illusion, a phantom who betrayed their trust?

The questions clawed at her mind, but she shook her head firmly, forcing herself back to the present.

"Get a grip, Zara," she whispered harshly. "You don’t belong here, and you don’t need to care what happens after you leave. It’s not your business."

Her voice trembled slightly, betraying the uncertainty she refused to acknowledge. She pushed the thoughts aside and rose to her feet, determined to focus on what she could control. As she made her way to the adjoining washroom, the door to her chamber creaked open.

"Good morning, my Luna," Lilly greeted with her usual cheerfulness. She entered with a bright smile, her energy a stark contrast to Zara’s brooding.

Zara blinked at her. "Lilly? You’re here early."

"The kings requested your presence at breakfast," Lilly said with a beaming grin. "They’re waiting for you in the dining room."

Zara frowned slightly, surprised. Breakfast was usually a solitary affair for her, or something she grabbed on the go before training. What could they possibly want now?

Curiosity prickled at her as she nodded. "Alright. Let me get ready."

Zara moved with purpose, bathing quickly before selecting an outfit. She chose a simple yet elegant full-sleeved turtleneck dress, pairing it with a headband that kept her hair away from her face while leaving the rest of her black locks cascading freely. For accessories, she opted for the necklace. one that had been with her since she’d woken in this world.

Satisfied with her appearance, she turned to Lilly. "Let’s go."

Lilly followed behind her as they left the chamber, Zara’s thoughts already racing ahead.

•••

Zara walked into the grand dining hall, her silver hair gleaming under the soft morning sunlight streaming through the stained-glass windows. Her heart fluttered at the sight of the kings already seated, their presence commanding yet familiar. She offered them a warm smile, but her gaze shifted in surprise when she noticed Ezra lounging casually at the far end of the table.

Before she could question his presence, Devonte rose from his seat and approached her with his signature grace. Leaning in, he placed a gentle kiss on her cheek, his voice low and affectionate as he greeted her. "Good morning, my Empress."

Her cheeks flushed slightly, but she smiled at his gesture, allowing him to guide her to the table. Denzel, already seated, shifted to make room for her between them. She couldn’t help but notice the playful tension in the air, a subtle indication that something was brewing.

As everyone settled, Ezra was the first to break the silence. "Well, congratulations to the three of you on your upcoming wedding," he said with a smirk, his voice laced with mischief. "I must say, I’m looking forward to it. A grand affair, no doubt."

Zara glanced between the brothers, her curiosity piqued. "Thank you, Ezra," she said politely, though her tone carried an edge of suspicion. "But... What’s the reason for this sudden gathering? I can’t help but feel there’s more to this than just breakfast."

Devonte leaned back slightly, his gaze steady as he spoke. "You’re right, Zara. There’s something important we need to share with you." He paused, letting the anticipation build before continuing. "Since we’re to be married, there’s a tradition we must uphold. Before the ceremony, we are required to meet the Moon Goddess and receive her blessing."

Zara’s eyes widened in shock, her breath catching. "Wait... the Moon Goddess? Are you saying we’re actually going to meet her? In person?"

Denzel nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "It’s true. As rulers of this realm, it’s our duty to seek her out personally. Her blessing is not just a formality. it’s essential."

The weight of his words sank in, but before Zara could respond, Denzel reached for her hand. His touch was gentle yet firm as he brought her hand to his lips. "And I must thank her for giving me you as my mate." His deep, sincere gaze bore into hers, making her heart race.

Caught off guard by his intensity, Zara looked down, her cheeks flushing a delicate pink. Ezra, ever the mischief-maker, couldn’t resist. "Alright, lovebirds," he teased, waving a hand dismissively. "Save the romance for your bedroom. We’re still here, you know."

Devonte shot him a warning glare, though his lips twitched with amusement. "Get lost, Ezra," Denzel said playfully, his tone light yet firm.

Laughter rippled through the group, easing the tension in the room. Zara finally looked up, her excitement shining through. "This is... unbelievable. I can’t wait. Meeting the Moon Goddess. it feels like a dream."

Devonte’s expression softened as he leaned closer. "There’s one more thing you should know," he said. "When we meet her, it’s customary to present an offering. a rare flower known as the Divine Rose. As our future queen, it will be your responsibility to gather the roses."

Zara blinked, her surprise evident. "Me? I have to pick them?"

"Yes," Devonte confirmed. "It’s a sacred tradition. The Divine Rose blooms only in a hidden forest at the base of the East Mountain, where we’ll find the Moon Goddess. Ezra will accompany you after lunch to guide you there." 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

Zara’s excitement grew, mingling with a hint of nervousness. "I’ve never heard of such a flower... but I’ll do it. I’m honored."

Her determination brought a proud smile to Devonte’s face. "Good. We’ll leave for the East Mountain tomorrow, so make sure you’re prepared."

With the plans set, the group turned their attention to breakfast. The lively chitchat that followed was filled with light banter and the occasional teasing, but Zara’s mind remained fixed on the journey ahead. The prospect of meeting the Moon Goddess and fulfilling her role as their queen filled her with both anticipation and resolve.

•••

After a delightful breakfast with her mates, Zara couldn’t help but feel a spark of excitement bubbling within her. The news of meeting the Moon Goddess had been the highlight of her morning. She clung to the hope that this divine encounter might finally offer answers to the chaos surrounding her arrival in this strange world. Surely, the goddess. being the ruler of this realm. would provide clarity, guidance, and perhaps even a way home.

With her mind preoccupied and a small smile playing on her lips, Zara decided to visit the town tailor. The event tomorrow was important, and she wanted to look her best. Something elegant yet unique, something that reflected her personality. bold, daring, and yet entirely her. Her steps were light, her thoughts swirling with anticipation and a tinge of nervousness.

As she strolled along the stone path toward the tailor’s shop, the warm sunlight filtered through the towering trees, casting intricate patterns on the ground. The air smelled of damp earth and blooming flowers, a gentle reminder of the natural beauty of this realm. She absentmindedly brushed her fingers against the soft petals of a passing rose bush, her thoughts wandering to what the Moon Goddess might look like. Would she be fierce and commanding or serene and nurturing?

Lost in her thoughts, Zara didn’t notice the faint, pulsing sensation beginning to build at the back of her head. It started as a dull throb, almost unnoticeable amidst her excitement. But within seconds, the ache intensified, spreading like wildfire through her skull.

Zara stopped dead in her tracks, clutching her head with both hands as a sharp, searing pain shot through her. It felt as though someone had driven a spike directly into her brain, twisting it with every passing moment. Her knees buckled, and she stumbled forward, barely managing to keep herself upright.

"What... what is this?" she gasped, her voice trembling. The world around her began to spin, the vibrant greens and blues of the landscape morphing into distorted smudges of color. The pain grew unbearable, and a gut-wrenching scream escaped her lips before she could stop it. She fell to her knees, her vision blurring as she struggled to make sense of the agony.

It wasn’t just pain; it was something deeper, something sinister. Zara could feel it crawling beneath her skin, slithering into her very soul. It was as if thousands of voices were screaming at once, their cries overlapping into a deafening roar inside her mind. Her breaths came in shallow gasps as tears streamed down her face.

"Help..." she choked out, her voice barely audible. She reached out a trembling hand, but there was no one in sight. The world around her seemed to fade, the colors bleeding into an oppressive blackness.

The last thing Zara saw before the darkness consumed her was the ground tilting beneath her as she collapsed completely. Her final thought, as her consciousness slipped away, was a sinking realization: she was in trouble again. Deep trouble.

Out of the void, a deep, haunting voice resonated, cutting through the silence like a blade. It was both familiar and terrifying, dripping with malice and a dark promise.

"We meet again."

The words wrapped around her like chains, dragging her further into the unknown as the darkness consumed her entirely.
