Rewriting My Fate in the Apocalypse-Chapter 409: Taking Responsibility
"It’s possible. But we are not hiding anymore, so it doesn’t matter if they find out where we live." Lu Zhen thought that his wife might be right but instead of showing fear, confidence radiated off of him.
Ouyang Jin and the others couldn’t help but marvel in awe. The old Commander Lu was back.
The Commander Lu who worked together with Commander Leng to cleanse the earth nearly all of the aliens and zombies before they were forced to retreat and protect the last piece of mankind. He was definitely back.
"Let them watch," Leng Pan agreed. "They lost a commander. They won’t rush in blindly again."
"That means they’ll send something stronger," Uncle Li concluded calmly.
"It doesn’t matter who or what comes. It is a one-way ticket to hell." Leng Pan never thought she would see the day Lu Zhen spoke such vulgar words, but she was impressed by his confidence.
It wasn’t just Leng Pan who was affected by Lu Zhen. Everyone else felt their spirits rise and blood boil as if itching for war.
They were ready to fight at any moment.
Leng Pan pointed at the map. Around the place that Lu Hao had mentioned.
"If they’re underground, they have tunnels."
"They should be part of those tunnels you found the last time. Even though we collapsed some of them, there is obviously and entire network of tunnels under the city." Lu Tao pointed out remembering the day Leng Pan had faced those mutated centipedes.
"Can we collapse them again?" Momo asked as she slipped wine slowly as if she wasn’t in a meeting planning how to kill aliens and zombies but in a wine-tasting party.
The woman knew how to live life. Even at the end of the world.
Lu Zhen shook his head slightly when he heard her suggestion. "Not yet. If we collapse blindly, we will lose intelligence routes."
Others might not know, but he knew that people like Vanish and Sonny who could disappear and appear whenever they wanted used such routes to scout for information.
If they collapsed those tunnels, then that is one less route their own people would have.
Leng Pan nodded in agreement. "Let’s gather information first before we make any decisions."
"So, what should we do?" Zaizai asked in confusion.
"Let’s wait for a few days before making our move. We will have enough time to observe the aliens and determine their goal and plans and at the same time wait for information from those people we dispatched to the military base. If there is any underground activity, they will find out and transmit the information to us." Leng Pan explained in detail so that everyone could be at ease.
"Are we certain we can trust them?" Auntie Li, who had been unnaturally quiet asked.
"Never doubt the person you use and never use the person you doubt. We have to trust them for now. But I believe Ouyang Jin also has contingency plans in that base." Leng Pan replied before turning to Ouyang Jin. "Am I right, lieutenant?" She asked with a knowing smile.
"Nothing escapes you, like always." Ouyang Jin praised before turning serious.
"Yes, I still have my informants in the base, so even if the information provided by the newcomers is flawed, I will find out in time."
Leng Pan turned to look at Lu Hao, "You will lead the scouts to ensure our external defense is solid."
"Me?" Lu Hao asked in disbelief.
"Yes, you. You have sharper senses than anyone else which is essential for detecting external threats." Leng Pan explained.
Something akin to determination flashed in Lu Hao’s eyes before he nodded. "I will do as you say." He could feel the weight of his responsibility. His family’s safety was in his hands and he had to ensure nothing went wrong.
Lu Tao raised his hand dramatically. "What about me?"
Lu Zhen looked at him and said in a flat tone, "Go build something more destructive than a watch. Maybe a bomb that could blow up aliens or something."
It was obvious Lu Zhen was just dismissing him, but the boy looked thoughtful for a moment.
".... that’s important too?" He muttered under his breath defensively.
"It is," Uncle Li reassured him. "Wars are won by logistics as much as power and external help is indispensable."
That seemed to restore his pride immediately.
"Okay. I will go and start making destructive things now." He jumped up immediately and ran out the door heading down the stairs to their apartment.
"Are you sure it’s okay to encourage him to do something so dangerous? What if he blows himself up and all of us along with him?" Li Yunjia turned to her oldest son and asked.
"He won’t. He might look like a scatterbrain but he is cautious. He won’t put others at risk." Lu Zhen replied with some pride.
One would think that Lu Tao was his son who had finally grown up.
The next few days involved planning for battle and making weapons.
On the evening of the third day, a message came from the military base that Commander Qui was colluding with aliens and the planned to attack several small bases simultaneously.
Just as this information was being discussed, Lu Hao spoke.
"The have started moving. They are coming closer to the base."
Everyone understood that ’They’ were the aliens who had been larking near their base for days.
They had just received information about an attack and now the aliens were moving.
It was obvious that their base was one of the targets.
"How far are they now?" Lu Zhen asked.
"Three kilometers." Lu Hao replied.
"Then we should act. Let’s not wait for them to get any closer in case it affects the perimeter of our base. We have children and elderly in the base now. We can’t scare them." Uncle Li suggested.
"Then let’s meet them head-on in those tunnels they are hiding in. Lu Hao, show us their exact location and tell us how many they are in total. We will use them as a warning to the others hiding in the dark." Leng Pan wasn’t naive enough to believe that the small group of aliens inside the tunnels was the only attack team from the enemy.
