Chapter 10: Back To The Agency

When Steven got home, the first thing he did was take a shower, as he was really sweaty. He had walked back instead of calling for a ride, because he didn’t want to see a big rebate multiplier triggered on such a small expense.

"I’ll get a car after I move into the condo," he muttered, as he dried his body.

He finished up and put on some light clothes. The weather was hot and his apartment didn’t have air conditioning to regulate the temperature.

Steven walked to the kitchen to make himself something to eat. He was famished from all the walking and felt like he would lose consciousness if he didn’t eat something soon.

Making lunch didn’t take long, as what he made was a simple chicken salad with bread.

He took his food to the bed and sat down. He took his time eating, and after he was done, he took the empty plate back to the kitchen and returned to the bed.

"Ah. That hit the spot," he sighed in satisfaction.

Steven picked up the shopping bag containing the laptop, took the box out, and started unboxing it.

After he was done, he plugged the laptop in to let it charge. Then he turned to the watch. He took the watch packaging out of the shopping bag, opened it, and took the watch out.

He observed it for a moment before putting it on. He looked at how the watch sat on his wrist, and the only thing he could think of, with his nonexistent fashion sense, was that it was perfect.

For a watch that cost $4,700, if it wasn’t perfect, then what was it.

There were watches that cost tens of thousands or even millions of dollars, but those were far beyond Steven’s current means.

After all of today’s purchases, his account balance had grown to $28,306.43 from barely $250 just twenty-four hours ago.

That was an amount some people worked an entire year to earn, and he now had it sitting in his account. And this wasn’t the end. As long as he kept spending, his balance would keep growing. The bigger the spending, the bigger the rebate.

"Ahem," Steven coughed lightly, pulling himself out of his thoughts.

He lay back on the bed with the intention of resting his still tired body. With the laptop charging, he had nothing else to do.

I should get some sleep. I didn’t get enough last night because of how excited I was. The agent probably won’t call until evening. I can sleep until then.

With that thought in mind, Steven made himself comfortable, closed his eyes, and drifted off to sleep.

Later that afternoon, Steven was woken by the sound of his phone ringing.

Still feeling drowsy, he turned and picked it up from the table and saw that it was an unknown number.

He immediately thought of the agent and answered the call.

"Hello?"

"Good afternoon. May I speak with Mr. Steven Craig?" The agent’s familiar voice came from the other end.

"This is Steven."

"Hello, Mr. Craig. This is Andrew. I’m calling regarding the rental application you submitted earlier today for the condo unit."

Steven straightened slightly when he heard this. The drowsiness he was feeling left him immediately.

"Yes?"

"I’m pleased to inform you that your application has been reviewed and approved by the property management."

A small smile of victory appeared on Steven’s face.

"That was quick."

"We were able to complete the checks faster than expected," Andrew replied politely. "If you’re still interested in the unit, we can proceed with the lease signing."

"What would I need to do?"

"You would need to come to our office to sign the lease agreement and pay the first month’s rent and the security deposit. Once that is done, we can arrange for you to receive the keys."

"And when can I move in?" Steven asked.

He really hoped he could move in immediately.

"The unit is currently vacant, so you could move in immediately after the paperwork is completed, if you’d like."

"That works for me," Steven said, as a smile of relief spread across his face.

"Wonderful. When would you like to come by?"

"I can be there soon."

"Perfect. We’ll have the documents prepared when you arrive."

"Alright. Thank you."

"You’re welcome, Mr. Craig. We’ll see you soon."

The call ended.

Steven lowered the phone and smiled to himself. He immediately jumped out of bed and put on a shirt.

He checked the laptop and saw that it was already fully charged. He unplugged it and switched off the wall socket before picking up his phone and leaving the apartment.

On his way downstairs, he called for a ride. When he got to the entrance, his ride wasn’t there yet, but it wasn’t far off.

He didn’t have to wait long before a car pulled up beside him. He confirmed that the driver’s face matched the photo in the app before getting in.

He gave the driver his destination and told him to get there as fast as possible.

The driver nodded and drove off immediately.

Steven wanted to get there quickly because he didn’t want to keep anyone waiting. He had no idea when the agency closed for the day, and it was already past four. He also didn’t want to push anything to the next day, which was why he had chosen to go today.

Fifteen minutes later, the driver pulled up in front of the agency building.

"Thanks, man. I really wish I could tip you, but I don’t have any cash on me," Steven said.

"It’s fine, brother. I can see it’s something important. You don’t need to tip me. I’m just doing my job," the driver said with a smile.

"Thanks a lot. I really appreciate it."

"You’re welcome," the driver nodded.

Steven got out of the car and started walking toward the building’s entrance. He heard the system notification and glanced at the messages.
