Book 3, Chapter 48: Intensify

Upon returning to the Arcane Palace, Chen Chuan received the receipt from Azure Dragon.

There was a handwritten note on it telling him that if he wasn’t free this month, those extra hours could be carried over to the next month, but only once. He also had to notify the company beforehand, or it wouldn’t be easy for them to make adjustments.

After some thinking, Chen Chuan contacted Yin Fang through his Realm Pass to ask how long this service of an extra three hours every month would last.

Yin Fang replied politely that this service would last twelve months. If he wanted to extend the service, he could talk to Sun Zhiming about it.

Chen Chuan said that he understood and asked that if he had additional hours on top of the three hours, could he merge them all together and get his Radiant Light session just once every month instead of having to go on separate occasions?

He could apply through the Resolution Department and Martial Valor University. He also had a recommendation to go through Cao Guiqi. That made a total of three hours a month. Along with the extra hours from Sun Zhiming, Chen Chuan had six hours a month. If he had to go on separate occasions each time, then he would need to travel at least four times a month, which would be a huge waste of time.

Yin Fang thought about it before saying that it wasn’t a problem. The company could coordinate things for him, but Radiant Light sessions could hurt a person’s body.

After every session, the martial artist would need some time to recover. Even though, in theory, the effects of Radiant Light on a martial artist’s body would be better the longer they were exposed to it, one should exercise caution and split up the sessions, if possible.

Chen Chuan expressed his understanding and thanked Yin Fang for his reply before saying that he intended to go for a session tomorrow afternoon. He also told Yin Fang that he intended to use those extra hours along with the one hour from the Resolution Department. Yin Fang gave a prompt reply that he would make the arrangements immediately, and he was to wait for a moment.

A few minutes later, Yin Fang sent a message telling him that there were empty slots at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.. Chen Chuan could choose either of these times.

He considered it briefly before picking the 1 p.m. slot. Yin Fang immediately gave a reply and said that he had submitted the record.

With things arranged, Chen Chuan checked the gold card Lu Shiqi had given him. It was a bearer account that allowed whoever had the card to withdraw cash from the bank account. The card contained a total of thirty thousand devs.

Good. It really was a practical gift.

It would allow Chen Chuan to purchase a few more Radiant Light sessions.

With these resources, he could get to the Third Limit. Not only would this give him an increase in status, but he should also gain access to some higher-tier secrets.

After checking everything, Chen Chuan took some medicine.

Whenever he ended a training session, he needed to take it to strengthen and restore his mutated tissue. He also had to keep up with his daily breathing technique and refined force training. Fortunately, Wu Ruo had left behind large quantities of all kinds of medicines, so he did not have to worry about it for a while.

As the effects of the medicine spread through him, Chen Chuan turned on his Realm Pass and read the news. The match at Rhinoceros’ Horn was finally reported. It seemed like Azure Dragon had smoothed things over with all parties, since Chen Chuan couldn’t find any useful information about it. Hence, after skimming through it, he switched to the niche channel.

There was a lot more information contained in the articles there. They even included the fact that Wei Wusheng had barged in and destroyed the tank, though the article didn’t go into great detail about it. It focused on the pros and cons of implants and unmodified bodies.

Chen Chuan then checked the comments. Many of the martial artists believed that even though no victor was decided, many martial artists would choose to get implants.

After all, compared to being unmodified, there were just too many advantages to be had from having implants. It could allow them to fight in different environments, and they could even change their damaged limbs any time they wanted.

But there was also a group who was against the idea, such as Dancing On A Cap. They said that the implant faction martial artist had a synchronization rate of more than 90%, which few people could achieve.

Besides, the implants on the market were produced by various companies, which meant that if they needed to maintain or upgrade them, they would have to go to the companies for that. They also needed to take anti-mutation medicine on a regular basis. On top of that, implants had domain vulnerabilities that allowed their mother companies to control them at any time. Skilled resonators could also exploit them.

Dancing On A Cap ended his argument by saying that they needed to be careful when choosing their implants.

Someone mocked him by saying that everyone and their grandmother in Central City had implants nowadays, and everyone had to take medicine every day. Why should they be worried about such things? The question was not whether to use implants, but rather which and how.

The person criticized Dancing On A Cap for having malicious intent and stopping other people from enjoying the benefits brought by advanced technology. They said that Dancing On A Cap’s arguments were those of a foolish, stubborn person, and they were a stumbling block for advancement.

Dancing On A Cap didn’t argue any further about this, but the other people got into an intense argument. In the blink of an eye, more than dozens of audio messages were left in the chat. Chen Chuan checked some of the ones that were highlighted to be of value before turning off his Realm Pass, washing up, and going to bed.

The next day, he went to Cao Guiqi’s place, just like they had agreed. Cao Guiqi gave him the two units of Treasure Paste he got from Tiancong Baicao. He also told Chen Chuan that once his foundation was solid enough, he would begin to officially teach him how to reach the Third Limit.

The time would entirely depend on Chen Chuan. If he couldn’t sense an obvious improvement, he could get another assessment from Hongfu.

While her assessments weren’t entirely accurate, they were an important reference people could rely on. If Hongfu said that Chen Chuan had more than a 60% chance to reach the Third Limit, he could begin attempting to reach it.

But that wasn’t foolproof. If Chen Chuan wanted to walk far down the path of a martial artist, it would be best if he only attempted it when his chance of success was more than 70%. That was why he had to grab all possible resources to keep improving.

Chen Chuan took note of Cao Guiqi’s warning. After having lunch with him, he left Motie Mountain and took a tram to Oceanview Hall.

Around an hour later, he got out.

Since there were no trams that headed straight to Oceanview Hall, Chen Chuan needed to walk for quite a bit. Once he entered Oceanview Hall’s territory, he wouldn’t be able to use his Realm Pass anymore. That wasn’t a problem for him, though. While he walked, he could practice his breathing technique.

Occasionally, he saw patrol cars passing by. When the City Patrol guards saw him, they came over and asked him a few questions.

Half an hour later, Chen Chuan reached Oceanview Hall. After the receptionist retrieved his record, the medical staff members believed that since Chen Chuan refused to take any painkillers, being exposed to four hours of Radiant Light would be extremely detrimental to him. They suggested he split his sessions to two hours today, then two hours tomorrow.

Chen Chuan considered it, then asked whether they had any oral painkillers, and if he took them, whether he could go for all four hours.

When the medical staff members heard this, Chen Chuan became much more normal in their eyes, so they patiently told him that while they had oral painkillers, their effects weren’t as good as that of injections. They could give them to him, but all of them cost money.

“I need them,” Chen Chuan said to not stand out too much.

He could use his second self to absorb the effects of the Radiant Light and the painkillers. Because of this, Chen Chuan could tough out four hours or even longer.

As for the money for the painkillers? The Resolution Department had paid for this Radiant Light session, so he wasn’t going to feel conflicted about this bit of additional expenses. After all, if he didn’t take any painkillers, people would start paying attention to him, and that would make things troublesome.

Once the medical staff members gave him the painkillers, the person in charge brought him into the hall for the Radiant Light session. It started at 1 p.m. and would last until 5 p.m..

Chen Chuan could feel his fascia and bones getting stronger. During the four hours, he trained and even practiced the switching of defensive refined forces for sabers. It felt great.

When he walked out, he saw another person walking out as well. During his visit last time, he had gotten to know that there wasn’t just one hall for Radiant Light sessions. Oceanview Hall could provide Radiant Light sessions for three martial artists at the same time. Since the slots for the Radiant Light sessions were distributed among the various forces of power way ahead of time, it was normal for Chen Chuan to run into other martial artists.

The one who came out appeared to be a teenage girl of around sixteen years old. At her age, she had at most started practicing her breathing technique, so Chen Chuan was quite surprised to see that she was already qualified for Radiant Light sessions.

A man in his late twenties came to pick her up. He wore a martial arts uniform with no emblem on it and gave Chen Chuan a polite nod.

Chen Chuan returned the nod before walking out of the hall with his belongings. Soon after he left, he heard a honk behind him.

When he turned around, he saw a sedan approaching him. The car window wound down, and Chen Chuan saw the man from earlier. “I saw that you were alone, and it’s already late. Since we’re going back to the city too, why don’t we leave together? It’ll be safer that way.”

“Thank you for the offer, but I’ll have to say no,” Chen Chuan tactfully declined.

The man didn’t get angry despite the refusal. He just smiled at Chen Chuan, gave him another nod, then drove away. As he did, he cast a glance at the girl behind him and saw that she seemed to be quite unhappy. He smiled and asked, “What’s wrong? You’re pouting.”

“That guy said no, even though you offered to send him back,” the girl grumbled.

“That’s all? This is normal. Martial artists have a strong sense of boundaries. He doesn’t know us, so he’s not in the wrong to refuse our offer. If we forced him to accept it, that would be coercion,” the man said with a chuckle.

The girl thought about it before giving a hum to show her understanding.

“That kid should be a student from Martial Valor University. If you weren’t studying martial arts with our grandmartial uncles, you could have gotten into Martial Valor University too, Xiao Jing.”

“I don’t like it. Martial uncle said that the university has a lot of rules, and the students face all sorts of restrictions from companies and government departments. There’s no freedom in that.” Xiao Jing pouted.

“There’s no place in the world that offers true freedom, though.” The man sighed but didn’t go deep into this. His sister was still young, and it would be better for her if she remained ignorant about certain things.

Instead, he said, “Speaking of Martial Valor University, our grandmartial uncles have arranged a private exchange between us and some of the university’s students. Do you want to go?”

Xiao Jing’s eyes lit up, and she clung to the back of his seat. “Yeah! I want to go!”

“I’ll bring you over so that you can get more experience, then,” the man promised with a smile.

After Chen Chuan returned to his room, he tested his body and found that the mutated tissue in his fascia and bones were still growing. Based on his previous experience, this growth was going to last for four to five days, which was a great feeling.

Next month, after he got his one hour from the university, he would have five hours in total.

I should try getting more hours from the Resolution Department too. That way, the effects will be even better, he decided inwardly.

Even if Chen Chuan didn’t fight for the hours, the two other students would try to steal what he already had. It was time for him to pay more attention to the important tasks from the Resolution Department.
