Rotting Land: Survive-Chapter 421 - 419: Purgatory on Earth (9)
"What!" The moment these words were spoken, it immediately aroused the astonishment of the two comrades!
Everyone knew that if it truly were zombies attacking the city, then based on the commotion outside just now, the number of beasts entering the city was definitely not small.
Let alone the three of them, even Dai Sha’s group, which had weapons, vehicles, and a large number of people, was likely buried in the sea of corpses, losing their lives.
"Do you have a way out?"
The doubts of his comrades were entirely within Luo Yi’s expectations. To be honest, even he was a bit unsure about the feasibility of his plan.
But huddling here only meant waiting for death. Since the zombies had come, they wouldn’t and couldn’t leave easily.
So even if there was only a one in ten thousand chance, Luo Yi was determined to risk it.
He recounted to his comrades in detail how he had met the zombies, how he had been taunted by them, and how he had inexplicably managed to kill one.
After hearing Luo Yi’s account, the doubts in the hearts of the two soldiers not only didn’t diminish but actually grew even stronger.
"You say zombies sniffed around you and didn’t attack?"
"Yes!" Luo Yi nodded affirmatively.
Seeing that Luo Yi didn’t seem to be joking, his comrade skeptically sniffed twice as he approached.
It would have been better if he didn’t smell anything; the moment he did, he almost spewed out the bowl of noodles he had just eaten.
"Damn! This smell is so damn strong, where did you get such a disgusting stench?"
Gesturing towards the corpse beneath him, Luo Yi shrugged with a bitter smile: "This guy, when I came down from the window, I accidentally fell and landed on him, getting covered in his stench."
"I see~" another soldier stroked his chin, murmuring thoughtfully, "Could it be that because you have the stench of a corpse, the beasts mistake you for one of their own?"
Undoubtedly, his comrade’s speculation was extremely bold, but it coincided perfectly with Luo Yi’s own deduction.
"Exactly! You thought of it too! I was just pondering why those beasts didn’t attack me, and this smell is the most plausible explanation."
"So according to you..." The comrade glanced at the corpse, then at Luo Yi, seemingly realizing something, furrowing his brow: "You don’t mean to suggest that we should..."
With a sly grin, Luo Yi nodded: "If the smell from the corpses can indeed confuse the beasts’ sense of smell, then we have no choice but to rely on them to get out."
"But what if... what if it doesn’t work!"
His comrade’s rebuttal was not without reason, after all, Luo Yi himself was uncertain about what had happened just now.
But to survive, this was the only option.
So...
"To be safe, I’ll go out and test it first. If it works, then you guys can try!"
But even a fool could hear that Luo Yi was gambling his life.
If he failed, it would cost him his life.
He was instantly met with a chorus of rejection from his comrades: "No way! This is too dangerous, if anyone should do it, it shouldn’t be you!"
As expected, Luo Yi had long anticipated his comrades wouldn’t agree, so he had prepared his argument: "Brothers, listen to me! First, I brought this up, so naturally, I should bear the risk! Second, I’ll take necessary precautions and won’t just recklessly rush out! Lastly, I’m the only one here who’s had close contact with zombies; I’m more experienced than you two, and if something happens, I’ll be better at reacting. Besides, someone has to stay here; if something goes wrong, you can come out to rescue!"
Though the points were few, they were reasonable, but his comrades seemed to still want to argue. However, determined not to give them the chance, Luo Yi continued,
"Alright! Everyone stop wasting time! Time is of the essence! Now’s not the time to argue about who gets to be a hero!" Saying this, Luo Yi got up and began stripping the corpse of its clothes.
Seeing his determination, his comrades could only grudgingly agree and started to assist him.
Whether the clothes or pants could be worn or not, Luo Yi was trying his best to put them on.
After all, the more he wrapped himself now, the better his chances of survival if danger arose later.
Once he finished wrapping himself in armor, Luo Yi was almost like an awkwardly wrapped bundle.
But that was just the start; the real task was yet to come.
Holding a knife, he opened a long slit in the corpse’s belly, fighting the churn in his stomach as he reached inside to grab and pull out the innards.
This was his first time doing something so disgusting, and without caring about what he was grabbing, he just pulled out whatever he could, smearing and hanging them on him. Disgusting as it was, for survival, Luo Yi had to grit his teeth and repeat the process.
Intestines, liver, spleen, and all sorts of "random" visceral organs were dug out one by one.
In no time, the previously handsome soldier had turned into a human display of organs.
No matter the look though, Luo Yi had successfully completed his disguise, and judging by the "distanced" expressions of his comrades, it seemed to be quite effective.
Handing the club to his comrades, it was time to test the outcome.
The three briefly went over the specific action steps, then together approached the tightly closed wooden door.
Positioned on either side, his comrades quickly pressed against the doorframe, their task being to guard the doorway.
As for Luo Yi, gripping the door bolt, after exchanging a look with his comrades, he resolutely twisted and dashed out.
Stepping out of the office, a strong smell of blood hit him, and Luo Yi clearly saw, less than a meter away, a black shadow crouching and digging at something.
Suppressing his inner fear, he gently shut the half-open wooden door.
But even though Luo Yi moved so carefully, the final "click" of the lock sounded like a pebble dropped into a clear spring, instantly stirring a ripple.
The black shadow paused, as did the roaming beasts as they stopped at the sudden noise.
They looked around, then one after another fixed their gaze on Luo Yi.
A chill surged through his heart; in such an environment, claiming "fearlessness" either meant one was crazy or incredibly brave.
At least for Luo Yi, he could clearly feel his right arm trembling uncontrollably.
But as a soldier of the Sharp Blade Company, ever since his first day in the company, all his training was to prepare for dire situations like this, so he quickly managed to adjust his state of mind.
Some things, even knowing they’re certain death, you must charge forward; that’s the difference between a warrior and a coward.
Luo Yi was clearly a warrior, and for the sake of survival, he resolutely took a step forward! (To be continued.
