Sacrificial Bride to the Feared Lord Hastings-Chapter 243: Fall of a king (1)
Sebastian rubbed his temple. "Why hasn’t any of you presented me with the queen’s head? With her father or her children’s heads? Ample time has passed for you to have found them. Aren’t all the men who stormed the palace dead?"
"Your Highness-"
"Majesty. I am the king now," Sebastian corrected the servant. "It is a new day. If I do not have Althea’s head by the end of this day, I will hang all the men who failed to find her."
"Your Majesty, all of the palace guards and knights are searching for her family. You couldn’t possibly kill all of them. Forgive me," George bowed his head. "I will tell the men how urgent it is to find the queen and her children. They couldn’t have gone far."
"I will reward the man who brings her to me. Didn’t I give you a task? Have you heard from Nigel Valthorn?" Sebastian asked, annoyed that Nigel’s end was silent.
"I sent it out right after you told me. It will take some time for it to reach him and then to get a response. Would you like me to send a boy out to deliver the message? Lord Valthorn will not be able to deny that you have sent him notice to come to the palace," said George.
Sebastian pointed his sword at George. "Are you suggesting that Nigel is ignoring me?"
"I would never make that suggestion about your dear friend. I was only saying that he could not deny your loyal servants sent him word of your request. Please forgive this lowly servant," George said, falling to his knees. "I will do better."
"You must. Your life depends on how well you do from this day onward. You must understand that Lord Valthorn will never betray me. He is one of the few men I never have to worry about betraying me. I believe it is the servants not doing their part," Sebastian said, leaning forward to push the tip of the sword against George’s chest.
"I assure you, Your Majesty. I have sent out the message each time you told me. Perhaps someone is interfering with it. That is why I want to send out a boy to deliver the message. Please allow me to," George pleaded.
"Very well," Sebastian agreed and pulled away his sword. "Send someone to personally deliver it, and on your way, go to Freya and bring her here. I want you to personally deliver her to me."
"Of course," George replied, but he wasn’t pleased. This wasn’t his duty.
Since when was George the one to run around for such trivial matters?
Maids and knights could do all of this.
George stood up and dusted off his clothing. "Oh, there is the matter of your future father-in-law. He is in the palace and not very happy that his daughter could have been hurt."
Sebastian closed his eyes, taking the moment to rest. "Send him out of the palace and forbid him to enter until I allow it. His daughter is now my property. Why do I need to see him each time there is trouble?"
"You are not yet married to Lilith, so she belongs to her father- I shall bring your mistress," George said, shifting the talk before he lost his head. "Excuse me," he said, backing away from Sebastian.
George was on high alert until he exited the chamber. He took a deep breath and held onto a wall for support.
’How will we fare with him?’ George wondered.
Already, Sebastian proved that he would not be an easy king. He was threatening to hang people left and right.
"I must get out of the palace," George muttered. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢
Though he had worked hard to find a position in the palace, it was not worth it to stay here when Sebastian was having fun with his power.
"How many will die before he sits on the throne? I must find someone else to serve him. The nerve of him to have me searching for a mistress," George mumbled as he hurried to Freya’s chamber. "I should be rewarded for this."
George ran to Freya’s bedchamber. He wouldn’t put it past Sebastian to place his sword against him if Freya weren’t brought sooner.
"Where are all the guards?" George wondered as he approached the bedchamber.
Freya was merely a mistress, but she was the current king’s mistress. There should be someone to watch her, but there was not even a maid present.
George opened the door and immediately covered his nose when he set foot into the bedchamber. "No, no, no," he repeated as he panicked.
George was horrified by the sight of the dead maids and guards inside the bedchamber. He was forced to look at each body to check if Freya was amongst them, but she was not.
How could there have been an attack in the palace on the king’s woman, yet it didn’t reach their ears?
It didn’t make any sense for no one to know Freya had been attacked and missing.
"Just my luck," George said as he ran out of the bedchamber. He hated to be the one to have to share this finding with Sebastian.
"You there!" George called for a knight he spotted. "Alert everyone that Freya Valthorn is missing. You must search the palace for her, or the king shall have our heads. Why aren’t you moving?"
"I must see the king now. A message came from outside the town. An army marches toward the town," the knight said, passing the note to George.
George snatched the note and read the contents. His eyes widened when he realised they were not close to being out of danger. "I will deliver this to the king. You must wait for his command."
"And what of Freya Valthorn-"
"She doesn’t matter right now. All focus must be on protecting the king. Do not speak of this until the king gives his orders," George said and left the knight. "Why now? Why must they come now?"
George knew no good would come from Lord Hastings and Duke Vale coming to the palace with their armies. They were both formidable men, and unless Sebastian had time to prepare for the attack, he would surely fall.
Sebastian trained with the palace army, but he had never led them. He was never placed by Edward to take charge, to know how to lead, because Edward liked to be in control.
"I must, I must," George said, stopping abruptly to look at the note. "I must leave," he decided, crumpling the note.
There was no doubt in George’s mind that Sebastian would throw everyone into the fire once Lord Hastings and Duke Vale arrived.
Sebastian was not a king George wanted to die for.
’He will find out some other way,’ George thought as he ran to hide, taking the note along with him.
