Chapter 55: Chapter 53 – The Children of Fire Talk to Daddy Fire

North Blue – Somewhere Near the Rubeck Archipelago

The cold wind of the North Blue bit at the edges of King’s black cloak as he soared low over the waves. Even with the sun dimly glinting on his obsidian armor, the chill air couldn’t pierce his Lunarian body — his flame, burning steady between his shoulders, kept him at an eternal warmth.

He had been flying for hours, searching for any trace of Bepo, the talking polar bear who would lead him to Trafalgar Law’s next route.

But before he could focus on the mission, a familiar ringing came from his belt. The Den Den Mushi attached to his hip — one with tiny black wings and a miniature crown — began to chime in a cheerful "Puru-puru-puru!"

King’s sharp eyes softened immediately.

He reached down and answered.

King: "...Shinobu?"

The snail’s shell shimmered for a moment before shifting — sprouting rounded cheeks and thick eyelashes, with a video projector lens flickering open like an eyelid.

Shinobu (through the Video Den Den Mushi): "You took long enough! I was about to assume you burned yourself out in that cold air. Anyway... you might want to sit down for this."

The picture steadied — and in the next instant, King’s usually stoic face lit up.

Egghead Island – The Nursery of Fire

The video feed opened to a warm, sunlit room filled with the laughter of children.

Fifteen small figures — dark-winged, with tiny flickers of flame on their backs — darted and danced through a glass-walled chamber lined with training obstacles. Each one bore features inherited from both their Lunarian father and their scientifically-enhanced mothers. Pale to dark skin tones, hair that shimmered between white, silver, and black, and eyes glowing faintly red or gold. They looked almost ethereal.

Shinobu (smiling smugly): "Mission One — very successful, if I say so myself. They’ve been awake for a week now and already testing their limits. Come, let me show you."

The Den Den Mushi followed her motion, panning across the training room.

Two boys were arm wrestling while their wings flared bright orange. Another pair raced each other through the air, giggling every time their tiny flames flickered hotter.A girl with silver hair sat cross-legged on the floor, eyes closed, concentrating — her small flame blazing higher, then vanishing completely as she practiced control.

King: "They’ve inherited strong genes from you and already have some level of control of their flames my lord."

Shinobu (proudly): "Mm-hmm. That’s not all — watch this."

She snapped her fingers.

Instantly, one of the older-looking girls (about twelve in apparent age, though artificially aged by Shinobu) lifted her hand. Her flame brightened to pure white — Advanced Flame Control, something most Lunarians took years to master. The air in the chamber shimmered from the heat, but she didn’t burn the floor. She smiled shyly at the camera.

Girl: "Papa?"

King froze. His breath hitched.

King (softly): "...Yes. I’m here."

The girl’s wings fluttered.

Girl: "We wanted to show you how strong we’ve become! Auntie Shinobu said we’re only allowed to fly five meters up... but—"Before Shinobu could stop her, the girl leapt — soaring fifteen meters into the air and gliding in a perfect arc before landing with a proud grin.

Shinobu: "—and that is why I said five meters!"King (chuckling quietly): "She reminds me of her mother."

The Children of Fire

The camera turned again, revealing clusters of the siblings sitting together.

The eldest five — tall, graceful, disciplined — were clearly inheritors of King’s tactical mind. They were already creating formations mid-air, mimicking battle stances.

The middle quintuplets were the loud ones, constantly teasing each other, making jokes about who could hold their flames the longest without dimming.

The youngest five were huddled around Shinobu, clinging to her legs and playing with her hair. One of them tried to balance a Den Den Mushi on his head.

Shinobu: "They’ve started calling each other by their own titles too. The eldest insists she’s ’Captain of the Fire Wing.’ The twins next to her are the ’Blazing Duo.’ I told them if they burn the curtains again, I’ll demote them to ’Cinders.’"

King couldn’t suppress a smile. For the first time in weeks, his usually stern eyes softened completely.

King: "They look... happy."

Shinobu (with warmth): "They are happy. They eat like little dragons, though. I had to convince Vegapunk’s assistants to cook twelve meals a day. You’d be proud — not one of them lost a sparring match today."

King: "Of course not. They’re Lunarians."

Suddenly, a small commotion erupted off-screen.

Two of the middle children were arguing — one had accidentally singed the other’s sleeve during a playful spar. Flames flared, voices rose.

Before Shinobu could intervene, the eldest girl stepped between them. Her voice was firm but gentle.

Eldest Girl: "We don’t fight to hurt. We fight to protect. That’s what Father said."

Both younger siblings blinked, then slowly nodded. They touched wings — a Lunarian sign of apology — and the flames around them cooled.

King (watching quietly): "...She remembered that."

Shinobu (softly): "They remember more than you think. Even the ones who’ve never met you feel... connected. Almost like instinct."

King’s flame flickered brighter behind him — a soft pulse of pride, gratitude, and emotion he rarely allowed to show. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

Heartfelt Connection

King: "Shinobu. You’ve done well. Tell them... I’m proud."

Shinobu turned the camera back to the children and announced,

"Your father says he’s proud of you!"

Fifteen little faces lit up like dawn.

Children (in unison): "Thank you, Papa!"

King (smiling faintly): "I’ll come home soon. Until then, train, protect each other, and obey Shinobu."

Eldest Girl: "We will!"

Youngest Boy (muttering): "Promise you’ll bring snacks."

King (deadpan): "...Snacks?"

Shinobu (laughing): "They discovered semla. Charlotte Linlin’s influence runs deep."

For a moment, even the cold winds of the North Blue felt warm.

Weaving Fates

As the call ended, King gazed out at the horizon, his flame burning stronger. However these fifteen small lives, born of his fire and blood and memory, were the true reason for everything he did.

He touched the Den Den Mushi gently before clipping it back to his belt.

King (to himself): "Children of Fire... the sky will be yours."

Then, spreading his wings, he took off again — a streak of black and gold fire cutting across the northern clouds.

Back on Egghead the video feed flickered out, leaving Shinobu and the children in a soft afterglow.

Shinobu (murmuring to herself): "He acts cold, but that man’s heart could warm the world."
