Chapter 20: Chapter 20 Going Out

He scanned the main bedroom he had only lived in for about a week, especially when he looked at the large double bed, his mind involuntarily conjured up certain thoughts.

At first, Shen Heyu thought that this life might really continue because of Grandma, even if Pei Yansi didn’t love her, he would pretend, and the two could always treat each other with mutual respect.

In reality, it was now more like a ‘cold’ respect.

She pulled out a suitcase from the corner with a combination lock, opened it, and began packing her belongings on the floor, piece by piece.

While she was still packing clothes, Bai Sheng’er walked in from outside.

Shen Heyu heard the footsteps, paused momentarily in her movements, then continued without giving Bai Sheng’er a single glance.

...

Bai Sheng’er first surveyed the room, and upon seeing the large double bed and the opened wardrobe filled with Pei Yansi and Shen Heyu’s clothes, jealousy welled up inside her.

Who wouldn’t feel jealous and pained seeing the clothes of the man she liked legitimately hanging alongside another woman’s?

She stepped forward, blinked with moist, innocent eyes, and looked at Shen Heyu, “Director Shen, I really didn’t mean to hinder your relationship, I’m just so scared…”

Shen Heyu didn’t say a word, she didn’t even spare her a glance, and continued to fold her clothes into the suitcase.

Seeing such indifference, Bai Sheng’er felt unhappy inside. Her gaze swept across the room, landing on a very attractive bracelet on the dressing table.

It was made of black jade, not the commonly seen white or bluish-green, distinct in color and beautiful in texture, shining with a lustrous gleam, clearly of considerable value.

Bai Sheng’er walked up, cooing, “Director Shen, let me help you pack…”

She was already by the dressing table after speaking. Aside from the bracelet, there were many bottles and jars laid out, she reached out, took a bottle of skincare lotion, and as she retracted her hand, she intentionally used the bottom of the bottle to sweep the bracelet onto the floor.

It was like a kitten batting at something on a table, and with just a ‘snap’, the black jade bracelet fell and shattered on the ground.

The entire episode transpired in just a few seconds, Shen Heyu hadn’t even had time to react.

She walked over, first glanced at the broken jade on the floor, then at the skincare product in Bai Sheng’er’s hand.

Bai Sheng’er’s eyes reddened as she choked out, “I’m sorry, I… I didn’t do it on purpose…”

“Did I allow you to touch my things?” Shen Heyu’s voice was cold, a cool light flashed across her beautiful eyes, “Touching means compensating. The price of this bracelet is worth as much as the house President Pei gave you. I’ll consider it used and have you compensate half.”

Bai Sheng’er was shocked; that house’s worth was astronomical, even half was more than what she could ever afford by selling herself.

But she wasn’t worried.

Her small mouth puckered, and tears fell from her drooping eyes and cheeks, “I… really didn’t mean to…”

Shen Heyu watched her tears, her expression unwaveringly calm, “So I’m not blaming you, I’m only asking you to compensate.”

Bai Sheng’er stared at her, tears flowing more fiercely, seemingly overwhelmed by an enormous injustice. At first, she sobbed briefly, but then, crying out loud with a different intent.

Pei Yansi heard from outside, frowned, and walked in to see Bai Sheng’er crying her heart out, as if she intended to cry out all the tears of her life, while contrasting with Shen Heyu, who appeared indifferent, watching her with a serene expression.

Anyone who saw this scene without knowing the background would think she had done something to Bai Sheng’er.

Pei Yansi saw the broken jade on the ground and coldly said, “What’s happened now?”

Shen Heyu hadn’t spoken yet when Bai Sheng’er burrowed straight into his arms, her pale white arms tightly wrapping around his muscular waist.

This sight stabbed Shen Heyu right in the heart.

Bai Sheng’er, buried in his embrace, sobbed, “I—I was helping Director Shen tidy up and accidentally broke it. She wants me to compensate, but I can’t afford it… It wasn’t deliberate…”

Pei Yansi’s brow furrowed slightly, and without a change in expression, he gently pushed her away from his embrace. Then, reaching out, he tenderly tousled her hair and said softly, “Don’t worry.”

As he turned his gaze back to Shen Heyu, his eyes were full of coldness. He walked over to the bedside table, took out a check, wrote down an astronomical figure, and flung it onto the nearby vanity, coldly saying to Shen Heyu, “You’re leaving, yet you can’t stay out of trouble. You just want money, don’t you? Now that you have it, you can go.”

Shen Heyu looked down, glanced at the check—the number on it was enough to buy ten such bracelets.

She didn’t know whether it was a mockery of herself or protection for Bai Sheng’er.

Shen Heyu laughed bitterly, a tinge of desolation in her voice, “You really don’t know what this bracelet is.”

The shirt is, the bracelet is as well.

All she did was utter those words, and Pei Yansi’s frown deepened as he lowered his gaze to the broken pieces on the ground.

They seemed familiar, but he couldn’t quite remember.

Shen Heyu didn’t take the check. She packed up her belongings as quickly as possible and, carrying her suitcase, left the apartment.

Her belongings were few, and the suitcase wasn’t heavy; it wasn’t difficult to pull. But once she stepped out of the apartment complex and saw the bustling traffic, she suddenly didn’t know where to go.

Because of Shen Fanshuang’s death, no one in her family believed her. She couldn’t return to that home, and in the vast city, she suddenly had nowhere to belong.

She sat crouching at the roadside, like a homeless wanderer, took out her cellphone, and called Lu Yunlan.

Lu Yunlan was Lu Yi’s sister, her college roommate.

Lu Yunlan picked up almost instantly, laughing, “You finally remembered me. You haven’t contacted me in days. What have you been up to?”

“Yunlan, where are you?” Hearing the familiar voice of her best friend, Shen Heyu suddenly felt like she had an outlet for her grievances. The emotions she had been holding back became hard to control, her voice choked with sobs.

Lu Yunlan sensed something was off and her tone became serious immediately, “What’s wrong? I’m out of town. My parents’ company organized a trip, what’s wrong with you? Don’t scare me.”

Hearing her concerned voice, Shen Heyu’s desire to divulge her recent troubles surged, and she recounted everything that had happened in the past few days without leaving any detail out.

Upon hearing the complete story, Lu Yunlan became livid, ranting over the phone, “Damn, what kind of dog is this man! It’s bad enough he’s keeping another woman on the side, but bringing her home directly?! Does he think this is ancient society, wanting to play the polygamy game?”

Lu Yunlan was straightforward and realized only after speaking that her words might have been inappropriate. She quickly added, “I don’t mean anything against you. Ranting won’t help now anyway. So, what’s your plan? Are you going to stay at a hotel?”

Shen Heyu nodded, then realized Lu Yunlan couldn’t see her and said, “Yes.”

“Forget it, if you stay in a hotel, won’t that just show you’re really homeless and have been badly bullied? That Bai woman would only be too pleased. How about this—why don’t you go to my brother’s place for now?”
