Chapter 81: Chapter 81: Conducting Appraisal

He didn’t give Shen Heyu a chance to refuse. He picked up the car keys next to him and walked past her to head outside.

Shen Heyu didn’t say anything more. With his driving skills, she was certain she could get to the airport much faster.

She got into the car with Pei Yansi. He drove very quickly; a journey that should have taken two hours only took him one hour to reach the airport.

However, after getting out of the car, Shen Heyu noticed he was still closely following her. As she prepared to go inside, she said to him, “Thank you, Mr. Pei. It’s enough to have brought me here.”

“It’s no problem. I’ll see you to your destination.”

Shen Heyu’s scalp tingled as she looked into his eyes, trying to discern his real purpose, but his eyes were dark and waveless, revealing nothing out of the ordinary.

...

She said, “Mr. Pei, why bother?”

“Are you not in a rush? Let’s go.”

Pei Yansi automatically ignored her question. After glancing at her flight number, he also booked a ticket and, using his influence, changed his seat to be next to hers.

When he sat down, he didn’t even know why he had done so. It was only when he sat next to her and smelled her scent that he suddenly felt like he had come to life.

It was no longer like before when he sat alone in the marital room they once shared, staying for an entire evening.

He preferred this tangible feeling, being able to touch her and hold her at any moment.

Five hours later, the plane landed.

As soon as Shen Heyu disembarked, someone was there to pick her up. Of course, this wasn’t something she could have arranged herself. She couldn’t help but look towards the man beside her.

What exactly did he mean by this?

The car sped away. Pei Yansi didn’t even ask for her address. She remembered that before Yuexue was born, he had visited once. Still, she was surprised to find he remembered the way, instructing the driver without a single mistake.

Soon, they arrived at the destination.

Shen Heyu didn’t even glance at Pei Yansi as she pushed open the car door and ran out. It had been five hours since she had contacted the doctor, who should have already arrived, yet she was still worried.

Upon entering her room, she saw the nanny sitting beside the baby cot, vigilantly waiting.

Hearing the door open, the nanny quickly got up and said, “Miss Shen, you’re back so soon? Yuexue’s fever has gone down. She just had some formula and has fallen asleep.”

Shen Heyu nodded and walked to the side of the baby cot, looking at the sleeping Yuexue inside.

Yuexue’s little face was flushed, and she was sound asleep, smacking her lips now and then, with the scent of milk on her body.

“Miss, who is this?” asked the nanny, eyeing the tall Pei Yansi curiously. However, he seemed to resemble Yuexue quite a bit!

That comment struck Shen Heyu like a revelation, and she instantly recalled something. Pei Yansi’s appearance was strikingly distinctive, boasting a strong level of recognition, and even though Yuexue was still young, some hints were apparent!

Her heart tightened, and she hastily turned around, using her body to shield Yuexue, saying, “A friend of mine.”

Pei Yansi heard her introduction and frowned slightly, evidently not pleased with her description. He corrected her, saying, “I’m her ex-husband.”

Upon hearing this, the nanny immediately understood that there was something unusual about their relationship, and the atmosphere turned somewhat delicate. She quickly left the room.

Pei Yansi surveyed the nursery, which was arranged simply and was far inferior to the one he had prepared before.

He looked towards the baby cot behind Shen Heyu and made a move to step forward and take a closer look.

He had seen it in the video, this Yuexue looked too much like himself.

Now he was even more suspicious, whose child she really was.

Shen Heyu noticed his intention and was startled, quickly extending her hands to his chest to stop his advancement, saying, “Mr. Pei, the child is asleep, whatever you have to say can wait until we go outside.”

Pei Yansi lowered his eyes and saw the undeniable panic hidden in hers.

He curled his lips into a smile, “It’s okay, children sleep lightly, and it won’t wake her.”

After saying that, he attempted to look at Yuexue again.

“Mr. Pei!” Shen Heyu raised her voice a notch to call him, grabbing his wrist and trying to pull him outside.

“Shen Heyu, what are you afraid of?”

Pei Yansi’s gaze grew colder, realizing her reaction was far from normal. Losing his patience, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her into his embrace.

Her entire body plunged into his arms and she could no longer shield Yuexue as she had at the beginning.

Yuexue on the baby bed was thus exposed, and Pei Yansi, looking at the child’s chubby, rosy face, could see despite being sick, Shen Heyu had taken very good care of her.

Yuexue’s little face, although still very young, already had very distinct features, clearly resembling his own. Especially the not yet prominent phoenix eye shape.

He could tell that once she grew older, Yuexue’s eyes would be just like his own, extremely characteristic danfeng eyes.

Seeing the child, Pei Yansi let out a cold laugh, looking down at Shen Heyu in his arms, he said, “Is she really the child you claimed was Lu Yi’s? Why does she look more like mine to me?”

Shen Heyu frowned, “I’m her mother, the decision on who the father is rest with me. Aren’t I more aware than you of who her child is?”

Pei Yansi’s gaze grew icy.

Indeed, a woman would naturally know for certain who the father of a child was better than a man. But it was precisely this point that Pei Yansi found extremely dissatisfying.

He smiled, though the smile didn’t reach his eyes, lifting Shen Heyu’s chin and looking deeply into her eyes, “Is that so? Then I’ll just take Yuexue to have a paternity test myself, how about that?”

Shen Heyu’s eyes flashed with panic. She had lied to him. If he found out that Yuexue was his child, there would be only two scenarios.

Either he would, as before, claim she wasn’t fit to have his child and take Yuexue away. Or he might cherish Yuexue but not want her, and still take Yuexue away.

Shen Heyu flatly refused, “If you dare take Yuexue away, I will fight you to the death!”

Pei Yansi touched her face, his touch gentle but with an unsettling undertone, “I won’t hurt her before it’s confirmed she’s not Lu Yi’s child. Of course, if she is my child…”

He didn’t continue, but the chill in his tone made Shen Heyu shudder.

What would he do? He would definitely, as she feared, take her away! Especially since the old lady adored children, it was not surprising she would think this way!

She said coldly, “I hope you won’t push me to that point.”

Pei Yansi had little patience, “That depends on your behavior. But I think I can give you a chance to explain clearly. Otherwise, once I find out, you know I can’t tolerate those who lie to me living in this world.”

Shen Heyu was just as unwilling to continue this back-and-forth, “I’ve said she is Lu Yi’s, and that is final.”

Upon hearing this, Pei Yansi stared at her for two seconds, then after a long silence, he finally said coldly, “Well done.”

With that, he turned and left her home.

Shen Heyu watched him go, feeling relieved, thinking this matter would come to an end. But she didn’t expect that the very next morning, he would arrive first thing with people in tow.
