When Ayra firmly shut her mouth and gave up on persuading him, this time Janus tried to reverse the situation and persuade her instead, his voice low and coaxing.

"You don’t have to go this far, do you? You’ve spent more years in the Labyrinth than in Solar anyway. You can’t be that attached to this land."

His words were far from human—but he knew humans too well. For a moment, Ayra was at a loss for words. Then she started to get angry. She knew he didn’t think or reason like a human, bound by their ethics—but still, it was infuriating.

"Is it some kind of regional bias? You don’t like Bolni or Sobletz? Then you could live even farther away. I can give you money, or ma-beasts, as much as you want. You could live happily."

Are all dragons like this? Seeing him talk so casually about "making her happy" while treating human lives like bugs made Ayra’s mind go cold. The irony was suffocating: the only thing dragons considered valuable was a human partner.

"Janus... Did your past lovers all get that kind of offer too, and then you sent them far away?"

Her voice was as soft as a feather, and Janus shut his mouth. For the first time, an awkward expression crossed his face.

"No wonder they all ended up living far away. Just like you said—they must all be living happily."

"Well... I haven’t seen them since, but I’m sure they’re doing fine."

So it was true. Janus didn’t deny it. The awkward look only lingered for a second before he shrugged like it was no big deal—like he’d always been faithful to his current lover.

"Thanks for the offer, but I’ll have to decline. It’s only been a few days—I want to try a little harder."

She said it gently, kindly, like she would to one of her fickle senior mages in the Labyrinth. But Janus’s eyebrow twitched in irritation. A shadow of cruel mischief flashed in his eyes, displeased with something.

"If you’re not going to ask me anything else, I’ll get going?"

"Sure. If I finish early today, I’ll stop by your place."

Ayra said it sweetly, trying to make it obvious that she hadn’t been avoiding him. Janus turned to head for the terrace window, then suddenly paused and spun around. As Ayra watched him curiously, her face went pale when he began walking toward her specimen cabinet.

"I’ve always wondered—what are these eyeballs?"

"They’re just... ma-beast specimens or something."

Ayra answered as calmly as she could, trying not to show her panic. But Janus’s crooked smile made it clear—he’d already figured it out.

"Strange. These should’ve turned to dust long ago, yet here they are."

"Haha, r-right? It’s really hard to preserve ma-beast samples, so..."

The corners of her lips trembled, and her pupils shook as if from an earthquake. The longer Janus lingered in front of the neatly arranged eyeball collection, the more Ayra broke into a cold sweat. Just a few punches from his 99,999 Physical ATK would be enough to shatter the protective magic. The collection she’d spent over a decade gathering would be obliterated. Turned to literal dust.

"There’s so many... can I take one?"

"Wha—?! No—"

She was about to shout no, but swallowed the words. Janus’s red eyes curved into an amused crescent as he leaned in to peer at a jar. Ayra shut her eyes tight.

It’s over. She should’ve hidden the collection the moment he found out she was the lord.

"Sure. Of course. One’s... fine."

"Oh? Then can I take one more?"

Janus tapped the jar with a claw. Ayra couldn’t even pretend to stay calm anymore. She clenched her fists and forced the words out through gritted teeth.

"Of course... you’re my boyfriend, after all..."

You bastard, piece of shit, may lightning strike you dead in the street! Not that it would matter—his HP was 9,999,999! As Janus took her precious collection into his greedy claws, Ayra wept internally.

And when Janus picked up her most beloved Specimen No.1—Ayra nearly cried blood. It was the oldest, largest, most radiant piece in her entire collection, shimmering in prismatic colors—a work of art.

To his credit, Janus didn’t take two. But he still walked away with her beautiful eyeball in hand. And just to rub salt in the wound, he kissed Ayra before leaving, looking smug while she trembled in silent devastation.

That night, Ayra emptied an entire bottle of liquor while sobbing, "My precious eyeball... that damn perverted lizard bastard..."

"Janus, say hello. This is Neveks. Neveks, this is Janus."

"Hello. It’s a pleasure to meet you."

The young woman blushed brightly, her shy smile glowing. With soft brown curls, sparkling blue eyes, and rosy lips, she was lovely—radiant and sweet.

This was the girl Ayra had discovered after agonizing for days over what kind of person might qualify as a "fated partner" for Janus.

"I was so curious when I heard the lord herself would be introducing me—and you’re even more..."

"...wonderful and dashing than ✧ NоvеIight ✧ (Original source) I imagined," Neveks said, visibly flustered and smitten. Janus glanced between her and Ayra, his red eyes clearly asking, “Did you seriously bring this human as my potential mate?” Ayra responded with her gaze: Yeah. That’s right. Then nudged Neveks forward.

"Just in case."

She put special emphasis on the "just in case," clearly implying Neveks was a candidate.

"Take care of her for today, okay? She’s from Bolni—doesn’t know much about Solar."

Ayra watched nervously, gauging her lover’s reaction. Janus stared at the woman with borderline rudeness, then broke into a satisfied grin. She hadn’t wanted him to flip out—but neither had she hoped to see him smiling so thrilled about a potential partner. Ayra’s stomach turned.

"Since you’re asking so nicely, I guess I have no choice."

Ayra imagined punching him in the face a hundred times. You think I wanted to go this far? You don’t know how many lives I’ve got riding on this. You—you merciless, eyeball-thieving lizard bastard!

She forced a smile and watched Janus walk off with Neveks. Once they were far enough, Ayra pulled out a small object from subspace. A magical device shaped like a bird, barely half a handspan in size.

She opened the beak, inserted a few mana stones, and channeled her magic. The bird’s eyes sparkled and it fluttered to life, taking to the sky.

Ayra usually used it to observe skittish ma-beasts. It consumed a lot of mana, but it allowed her to share its vision—and it even had zoom in/out functions.

The bird flew from a distance, careful not to alert Janus. He glanced back now and then, probably gauging her position by scent. Eventually, convinced Ayra wasn’t nearby, he asked Neveks:

"Since it’s your first time in Solar, want to start with a view of the river?"

"Yes! That sounds wonderful!"

Hearing his kind, gentle tone made Ayra jealous—despite having orchestrated this entire setup. She hadn’t expected to be immune to jealousy, but the depth and intensity of it still caught her off guard.

Look how sweet he’s being. Just because she’s a partner candidate...

Seated on her study couch, viewing through the bird’s eyes, Ayra scowled. For a guy with a girlfriend, Janus was being way too soft. At least, from her point of view. And then he started leading Neveks downstream, into a more isolated area.

Already heading somewhere secluded? They just met!

Watching in disbelief, she followed them to a remote bend in the river. The little bird, sensing Ayra’s emotions, clacked its beak and flapped its wings tensely. Then Janus gently wrapped an arm around Neveks’s shoulder.

"This is the river that runs through the city."

"It’s beautiful. We have rivers in Bolni, too, but this is different."

Ayra listened with a sour face as they chatted about the thin ice, how the river would freeze solid soon, and how you could walk on it in a few weeks. Then Janus said something strange.

"The view underwater is nice too. Want to take a look?"

"Excuse me? Underwater?"

Neveks blinked in confusion. In the next moment, Janus shoved her into the river.

"Ah!"

It was so sudden that Neveks couldn’t react. She splashed into the freezing river like a stone. Ayra sprang to her feet in shock as Janus stood there with his hands in his pockets, calmly watching her flail and get swept downstream by the current.

"How is it? This river has clean, clear water."

Neveks surfaced a few times, pale and gasping—then disappeared completely beneath the water.

And Janus, after pushing a woman into an icy river, didn’t show a shred of guilt. He just shrugged, like maybe the view was too beautiful, and walked away without a second glance.

Ayra was so stunned she completely forgot to follow him.
