Shroud Arcanum-Chapter 8 - - Elusive Encounter
Chapter 8: Chapter 8 - Elusive Encounter
Liam took a moment, letting the reality of his surroundings sink in. "So, I've returned to the last place I met my end?" He mused aloud, looking around, the all-too-familiar crystal area mocking him with its eeriness.
The crystal area's chilling ambiance had an eerie familiarity with Liam. The pale luminescence of the crystals cast ghostly shadows upon the ground. He recalled the cold, merciless grasp of the creatures that had ended his life, and a shiver coursed down his spine. The ethereal blue glow of the crystals seemed to pulse like the heartbeat of this surreal land.
Trick's voice echoed playfully but with an undertone of caution, "Deja vu, huh? Not the friendliest of reunions, I'd say. Keep those senses sharp, kiddo."
Liam frowned, searching for the remnants of the young titan that he had killed. Surprisingly, all that remained was a splatter of dark ichor, with no corpse in sight. "Did those creatures... eat it, nothing left?" The idea sent a chill up his spine.
"You've got the idea," Trick responded, his voice tinged with distaste. "Survival here has its own twisted rules. Waste not, want not, I guess."
Shaking off the dread, Liam's attention snapped to the present. He took a deep breath and tried to calm his racing heart. The atmosphere was thick with a suffocating tension, pressing down on him like a tangible force.
Strange crystalline structures, reflecting a soft luminescent glow, punctuated the otherwise shadowy landscape. These crystals cast faint, ghostly illuminations, making the shadows around them dance menacingly. 𝘣𝑒𝑑𝘯𝘰𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝑜𝘳𝘨
His heart raced as memories of the ambush flooded back, and he realized that staying still might not be the best option. Liam thought I couldn't let the same thing happen again.
The need to find a vantage point became clear. If he could just get to higher ground, he'd have a better view of his surroundings and could plan his next move more effectively. Besides, this unsettling place had other perils; he needed to find clean water and sustenance soon.
The hunger in his stomach was a stark reminder.
Images of the last area he had ascended flashed in his mind. The memory was clear: a rugged outcrop towering over the surreal landscape, offering an expansive view of the surroundings. If he could get back there, it would not only serve as a vantage point but also a temporary safe haven from the lurking dangers below.
As Liam moved stealthily, the environment around him changed subtly. The luminescent crystals grew denser, their cold light intermingling and creating an ethereal dance of blue and silver hues.
Amidst the quiet of the area, punctuated only by his careful footsteps and the occasional distant drip of water, a series of sharp noises began to reach his ears.
The unmistakable sound of metal clashing against metal echoed through the area, growing louder as he advanced. The rhythmic pattern of a fight, perhaps two or more entities, was evident.
Someone or something is engaged in a battle nearby, Liam thought. The source of the noise might mean danger, but it also meant there were other living beings around—potentially allies or sources of information.
With renewed caution, he changed direction and carefully moved closer to the source of the disturbance. Liam stumbled upon a sight that took him aback. A figure was surrounded by the same crystalline slime that had been the cause of Liam's downfall. The person was clearly holding his own, but he was outnumbered.
The figure was tall and slender, with pointed ears that made Liam think of him as elven or at least part elven. His skin was pale white, and his hair, a waterfall of silver cascading down his back, was tied into a high ponytail.
His piercing azure eyes reflected a fierce determination. He was garbed in a silver-white tunic embossed with intricate designs that shimmered with every movement. Around his waist, a belt held multiple pouches and vials, suggesting his proficiency in alchemy or magic. But what truly stood out was his weapon: a sleek double-bladed staff, both ends emitting a soft glow.
As the creatures lunged at him, the elf moved with fluid grace, his staff twirling and slicing through the air, creating an impenetrable barrier around him.
Liam is no samaritan. He won't go out and risk his life for a stranger, but he decides to stay and stealthily observe more as they use similar weapons. Liam can learn more about how to use them in combat, and he also sees how he defeats those crystalline slime.
One of the creature's sharp tentacles moves to stab as the figure dodges it fluidly, like having eyes on his back. He swiftly rolled and slashed into the slim, splitting it from the middle. But the creatures were relentless.
Another approached from the side, trying to pin the stranger between itself and its injured ally.
Sensing the danger, the stranger planted his staff in the ground, using it as a pivot to perform a spectacular aerial flip over the incoming creature. Before it could react, he was behind it, staff spinning in a blinding flurry. In a matter of moments, the creature was sliced into several pieces, its life fluids pooling around.
The stranger, now having taken down two of his foes, didn't pause. His focus was laser-sharp, eyes darting around, watching for any more threats. With each move, each strike, Liam couldn't help but be impressed by the stranger's proficiency. Liam noticed the stranger's exceptional footwork, always placing himself in advantageous positions, leading some creatures into the attacks of others, and causing confusion in their ranks.
At one point, two creatures lunged simultaneously, their tentacles intertwined in their eagerness to strike. Seizing the opportunity, the stranger leaped, his weapon slicing down in a powerful arc, severing multiple tentacles in one go.
But he knew he couldn't linger for long. As the skirmish concluded, Liam prepared to make his exit, hoping to remain undetected while carrying with him the valuable lessons from the stranger's combat display.
Trick's voice bubbled with mirth as he commented, "Why so shy, Liam? You could've been the valiant knight rushing to aid the damsel in distress... or, well, the elvish-looking dude in distress in this case."
Liam shot a sidelong glance in Trick's voice direction, though he knew he wouldn't see him. "Why would I? Risking my life for a stranger isn't high on my to-do list. Besides, I got a free lesson. Maybe I'd jump in when the hard work's done, you know, for information. Pausing for a breath, he added with genuine curiosity, "By the way, I'm not the only one here?"
Trick chortled, "Oh, so strategic! Thinking ahead, huh? But, to answer your question: no, you aren't alone here. This trial area? It's vast, my dear boy. Imagine it as being more immense than your home planet. At any given moment, there are millions from across the universe participating. Quite the party, isn't it?"
Liam's mind raced, processing this revelation. "Millions? That's... unexpected. So, are they all like that guy? Trained fighters?"
Before Trick could respond, a voice, sharp and demanding, sliced through the air. "Have you seen enough, peeping tom?" It was the stranger, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
"Two choices for you: act as a delightful bait for those creatures so I can use my bomb to get rid of them, or, well, find out how it feels to have said bomb hurled at you. Oh, and don't even think about running; it won't end well for you."
"Peeping tom? I prefer to think of it as strategic observation," Liam retorted, trying to diffuse the tension with a light quip. However, he kept his body poised, ready for any sudden movement from the stranger.
The stranger smirked, his eyes assessing Liam. "Strategic observation? Well, whatever you call it, you have only two options now."
Trick's playful voice popped into Liam's head, "Ah, always a way with words! Now might be a good time to show off some of those new moves you've picked up, eh?"
Ignoring Trick for the moment, Liam took a deep breath. "Alright, let's say I help you. What's in it for me? Besides not getting blown up, of course."
The stranger's intense gaze held Liam unwavering. The corners of his lips twitched upward momentarily, contrasting starkly with the life-threatening situation surrounding him. It was a brief moment where his graceful evasion of the creature's assault and the playful quirk of his mouth clashed in a peculiar display.
His voice edged with a trace of sardonic humor. "Information. Answers. Judging by your look, I'd guess you haven't been here long. I, on the other hand, have through this godforsaken place for a few agonizing years. I can provide pointers, maybe some tricks of the trade. But heed this warning: double-cross me, and you'll quickly find that bomb is the least of your worry."
Before Liam could respond, Trick's voice, dripping with playful sarcasm, floated into his thoughts. "Oh, how charming! Looks like you've made a new friend, Liam. I'd get his autograph if I were you."
Suppressing a smile, Liam shot back mentally, 'Not the time, Trick.' Aloud, he replied to the stranger, "Alright Deal. You've got knowledge, and I've got a long list of questions that need answers."
