Single Wish: Rise Of The Omniscient Paragon-Chapter 827 - 824: The Second Day
Chapter 827: 824: The Second Day
It began slowly.
The giggles faded first.
Then the swaying stopped.
And one by one, the undead that stood outside the barrier of the house began to turn to dust.
It wasn’t a dramatic thing.
No light.
No sound.
No grand display.
They simply collapsed.
One moment they were there, grinning and twitching.
The next, they were ash- pale, bone-grey ash that scattered with the faintest wind.
Corey watched from the window.
He said nothing, but his gaze was fixed on the way the remains of the undead drifted off like burnt paper.
Yara approached quietly. "They’re gone... Just like that?"
"No."
It was Kieran who spoke, stepping closer with his sabers still in his hands.
"They’ll be back when the night comes... We’ll have to be ready for that."
Corey looked at both of them before shifting his gaze back at the ash filled grounds outside.
"At least it’s better like this. Who knows what would have happened if they were still outside. Standing still like statues."
"Hmm. True." Kieran hummed.
Three seconds later, a massive gust of wind suddenly blew outside, carrying with it the remains of the undead.
Corey looked in the direction of the wind with a glint in his eyes.
Meanwhile, the others were looking at the sky.
The red stars that had vanished the night before began to reappear, twinkling dully like bloodstained embers in a grey, motionless sky.
Day had come.
But the city felt more dead than before.
The barrier around the house shimmered once, then vanished completely. There was a strange silence afterward, almost like the city was holding its breath.
Nobody said a word for a long time until Zeke finally broke the silence.
"We moving or what?"
---
They stepped out cautiously with their weapons drawn and their eyes sharp.
Although the gust of wind had carried most of the ash, the streets were still covered in trails of ash.
Some formed outlines of the creatures that once stood there, others just formed strange symbols as if the dust had rearranged itself.
The group moved.
Their destination?
The center of the city.
At first the group chose to walk, but after seeing that the distance they covered was small, they decided to run.
They ran at the same pace, making sure that none was left behind or was ahead of them.
As they ran, Corey activated his Eyes of Omniscience and continued his observation of the city.
Unlike the others who only saw strange buildings and objects placed in eerie positions, what he saw was different.
He saw some buildings that flickered between ruined structures and ancient looking, ornate halls.
He saw figures standing in the windows. They did not move, but their eyes moved, trailing every single one of them.
He saw strange symbols and runes that were drawn into the streets. Many of them were invisible to the naked eye.
Some of them were traps that would activate if they were in their vicinity.
Fortunately, they had not encountered any.
They were rare regardless.
’The night lasted eight hours and twenty-three minutes.’ Corey thought as his feet landed on a rooftop. ’That means the day might be the same... Or shorter. When we first arrived here, the day was extremely short and night came in less than two hours... I doubt if that would happen this time around.’
’And I also wonder if this place follows a pattern.’
His gaze moved to the sky.
Still grey.
And still filled with unmoving red stars.
’Hopefully the day is longer, not shorter... We can’t waste any time.’
He looked down. ’I don’t want to see what the following nights have in store for us.’
He glanced around after ending his train of thought.
Unlike the others who had no idea how large the city was, he knew that the city was large.
He had tried expanding the range of his Eyes of Omniscience, and he was surprised to see that the city was thrice as large as the capital of the Kingdom of Miracles, Serithal.
It wasn’t just wide.
It was massive.
They had been running for more than thirty minutes, and Corey could still see the same towers in the distance that they had seen from the clocktower.
Buildings curved into each other.
Bridges connected rooftops with no purpose.
A shattered church stood upside-down on a hill, its bell tolling softly with no sound.
And there were the strange scenes.
A broken statue in the middle of a cracked plaza whispered softly.
Nobody could hear it.
But Corey did with his Ears of Omniscience. And if the group could hear what he was hearing, they would be immensely terrified.
It said names.
Names of the group.
One by one.
In a child’s voice.
Even his real name was mentioned.
He didn’t say anything, but the seriousness in his eyes deepened.
Further down the road, Myra suddenly stopped.
Her eyes were glazed.
She was walking toward a door that hadn’t been there a second ago.
Corey turned, just in time to see Kieran’s illusion magic activate.
A shimmer of blue light erupted from his eyes. Then Myra blinked and staggered back.
"What... was that?" she asked.
Kieran didn’t answer immediately. Then a stream of blood fell from the corner of his eyes.
"An illusion," he said. "A powerful one."
Everybody went quiet when they saw the blood from Kieran’s eyes.
But they kept moving, and they kept on encountering weird and eerie situations.
Yara pointed out a lamppost that seemed to be bleeding.
Aelric avoided a puddle that moved on its own.
Zeke shot a rat with three heads just to be sure it wasn’t something worse.
Meanwhile, Corey kept watching and thinking.
’My instincts are going wild in certain parts of the city... I can’t see through those places with my Eyes of Omniscience, but those places are extremely dangerous... Even for me.’
They kept on running for two more hours, but there was still no center.
Even through Corey’s Eyes of Omniscience.
However, thirty minutes later, Corey saw something through his Eyes of Omniscience.
In the distance, hidden between two twisting towers, stood a building that called to him.
It looked ancient.
And yet new.
It was tall- seven floors or more- and it was also covered in dark grey vines.
The entrance was flanked by two statues that looked like headless scholars, and on the front of all was a plaque.
THE ARCHIVE OF ****
Corey’s eyes narrowed.
’The last words have been clawed off. I can’t read it at all.’
A pondering light flashed in his eyes.
’There are books in the building. A lot of books... I need to check it. There might be something useful inside. Something important.’
He looked at the others.
They were still far from reaching the building. Almost five kilometers from it.
He used two skills at the same time.
Void Step
Infinite Mirage
A version of himself continued walking with the group.
Perfectly in sync.
Perfectly detailed.
None noticed at all.
Meanwhile, the real Corey vanished and appeared a few meters in front of the Archive.
He didn’t know what he’d find.
But he had a feeling...
That whatever was inside?
Was worth the risk.
