Sir, Please Sign Here to Get a Divorce-Chapter 13: He No Longer Needs Her to Have a Child
Ethan Yardley didn’t want to bring up the mistake he had made in his reckless youth.
He just looked at the woman beside him, hesitating for a long moment before changing the subject.
"Alright, let’s not talk about other people. Go on and eat."
Seeing that her Uncle didn’t want to talk about it, Serena Yardley didn’t press him further.
In the end, she just silently lowered her head and forced the food down, each bite tasting of bitterness.
Tears welled in her eyes, but she stubbornly refused to let them fall.
Ethan Yardley didn’t touch his chopsticks the entire time, just quietly watching the woman beside him eat.
Serena Yardley looked up and saw that he wasn’t eating. Her voice was a little hoarse as she asked, "Aren’t you eating, Uncle? You look like you’ve lost weight, too."
"I’m not hungry."
Serena Yardley insisted, placing some food on his plate. "Come on, Uncle, eat with me."
Only then did Ethan Yardley reluctantly pick up his chopsticks.
After they finished eating, Serena Yardley asked again, "So you’re not coming home with me tonight either? You’re going to be with her again?"
"Yes."
He didn’t deny it.
"Then you should go. I’ll just get a taxi back to the university later."
Serena Yardley suppressed the sour feeling in her heart, her urging tone tinged with pique.
She turned her head away, unable to look at him. She was miserable and angry, but she didn’t want to throw a fit at him.
Ethan Yardley was an incredibly perceptive man; how could he not know what she was feeling?
He reached out to hug her.
Serena Yardley kept all her anger bottled up inside.
The moment her Uncle touched her, she lost control, slapping his hand away and shouting hysterically:
"Aren’t you going to be with her? Then go!"
Ethan Yardley’s face darkened, his voice laced with displeasure. "Are you starting a fight with me again?"
Serena Yardley said stubbornly, "No. I just don’t want to keep you from someone else."
"So you’ll feel better if I leave?"
"If I don’t feel better, will you stop seeing that woman?"
Serena Yardley retorted.
Ethan Yardley was silent.
Obviously, he couldn’t.
He patiently explained to her, "Once Sylvia Schuyler has recovered, I’ll naturally stop seeing her."
"Why are you always throwing these childish tantrums? Can’t you try to understand me for once?"
’This woman... She always likes to start fights with me. My patience has its limits.’
"How am I throwing a childish tantrum? I do understand you! Didn’t I just tell you to go?"
Serena Yardley shot back sulkily.
’I’m just pissed off. Can’t I even vent a little?’
Completely at a loss, Ethan Yardley reached out again and pulled her into his arms. "Alright, stop fighting. I’ll handle things."
Serena Yardley said nothing, but she didn’t push him away this time.
’Nestled in his embrace, why do I suddenly feel even more like crying?’
In the end, she couldn’t stop the tears from falling.
Watching her, Ethan Yardley’s brows furrowed with heartache.
His slender, well-defined fingers gently wiped the tears from her cheeks.
"Serena, don’t cry."
Serena Yardley refused to be placated. "I’m miserable. What’s wrong with crying a little?"
"Fine. Then go on and cry."
He was helpless. He’d just have to wait for her to cry it all out.
But just then, Serena Yardley suddenly stopped crying. She tilted her head up, looked at him, and said angrily:
"You tell me to cry, so I’m deliberately not going to. I’ll just make you mad instead."
Ethan Yardley was speechless.
’She still knows how to talk back to me. It seems she’s not as fragile as I imagined.’
"Come on, I’ll take you back to the university."
Serena Yardley stood still. "It’s only a ten-minute drive back to the university. After that, I won’t be able to see you again. Can you just hold me a little longer?"
Ethan Yardley obliged, holding her tightly as they stood there in the private dining room.
Serena Yardley called out in a soft, gentle voice, "Uncle..."
"Mm."
"Do you love me?"
Ethan Yardley didn’t answer.
Serena Yardley knew it. Getting her Uncle to say the three words ’I love you’ would require the sun to rise in the west and the stars to realign.
She gave up and changed the subject. "Uncle, if you have a baby in the future, would you prefer a boy or a girl?"
"I’d love either."
"Then pick a name for the baby. One for a boy and one for a girl, just in case."
Ethan Yardley looked down at the woman nestled against his chest and frowned. "We don’t even have a baby. What’s the point of picking a name?"
"I already said it’s just in case. What if we have one later?"
"We’ll pick one later."
Serena Yardley was at a loss for words.
’Should I tell him now? That I’m already pregnant?’
’In just a few months, he’s going to be a father.’
"You should stop thinking about having children," Ethan Yardley said suddenly in a low voice. "Focus on your studies first. We can talk about it later."
The implication was clear: he didn’t want her, Serena Yardley, to have his child.
He knew deep down that he would end up marrying Sylvia Schuyler. If Serena had his child, it would ruin her entire life.
"What did you say?"
Serena Yardley tilted her head up, staring blankly at the man before her.
Ethan Yardley explained, "I mean, you’re still a student. We can talk about having children later."
...
Serena Yardley was speechless.
’So he doesn’t want a child now?’
’Is it that he doesn’t want one, or that he doesn’t want me to be the one to have it?’
’Then what about the one in my belly right now?’
Serena Yardley was suddenly in a daze. Her small hand trembled as it drifted toward her abdomen.
"Let’s go. I’ll take you back to the university."
Ethan Yardley took her small hand and led her out of the private room.
Serena Yardley was suddenly like a soulless puppet, listlessly letting Ethan Yardley lead her along.
Once they were in the car, it sped toward Arden University.
Before Serena Yardley could even come to her senses, the car had stopped at the university gates.
The man’s pleasant, gentle voice reached her ears. "We’re here."
Only then did Serena Yardley react, preparing to get out of the car in a daze.
But Ethan Yardley suddenly grabbed her small hand again. "Are you alright?" he asked.
Serena Yardley looked terribly pale right now, and Ethan Yardley was a little worried.
Serena Yardley shook her head numbly. "I’m fine, Uncle."
Only then did Ethan Yardley let go. "You should have exams these days, right? Don’t overthink things. Do well on your tests. After the break starts, I’ll find some time to take you out somewhere to relax."
"Okay."
Serena Yardley got out of the car and walked toward the university gate without a single look back.
Ethan Yardley watched her receding figure through the car window for a long moment before finally pulling his gaze away and signaling the driver. "Let’s go."
Their car had just pulled away when, in another car not far behind, a man dressed in black dialed Sylvia Schuyler’s number.
Sylvia Schuyler was still in her hospital room. When she saw her phone ring on the bedside table, she picked it up and answered.
On the other end of the line, the man said:
"Miss, Mr. Yardley did indeed meet with his little wife. The two of them had dinner at a restaurant, and Mr. Yardley only left after taking her back to her university."
Hearing this, Sylvia Schuyler’s expression became utterly grim.
Ethan Yardley had said he was going to the office to handle some things. She never expected he was actually going to see Serena Yardley.
’Could it be that Ethan Yardley actually has feelings for that woman?’
At this thought, Sylvia Schuyler gritted her teeth and ordered the man on the phone.
"Keep an eye on Serena Yardley at all times. If you can get a photo of her fooling around with another man, I’ll give you one hundred thousand for each picture."
Upon hearing this, the man in black said excitedly:
"Yes, Miss. Don’t you worry, we’ll definitely get the kind of photos you’re looking for."
