Ethan Yardley turned and left.
Serena Yardley’s head was throbbing. She got up, went to the bed, and lay face down, gritting her teeth as she endured the pain.
After a long, long time, she didn’t know if she had passed out from the pain or simply fallen asleep.
Downstairs.
Ethan sat on the living room sofa, his face clouded with worry.
If Serena was adamant about not having the baby, there was truly nothing he could do.
’But if we don’t have children in the future, my family...’
Just then, someone walked in through the door.
Ethan looked up and saw it was Nina Thorne.
She had come alone. Seeing Ethan, she asked with concern, "Where’s Serena?"
Ethan gestured upstairs.
Nina walked over, saw his terrible expression, and asked again,
"What’s wrong? Isn’t being pregnant a good thing? Why are you two reacting so strangely?"
Their relationship wasn’t like hers and Quinn Gardner’s, which was on the verge of divorce.
Those two were so loving and inseparable every day. Having a child would only strengthen their marriage.
This should be the best news they could hope for.
So why did neither of them look happy?
"Serena doesn’t want the baby. It’s my fault, too. I didn’t discuss it with her properly."
Looking at Nina, Ethan humbled himself. "Could you help me try to persuade her?"
"She doesn’t seem like someone who dislikes children. Why wouldn’t she want a baby?"
Nina was confused. "Besides, she’s accepted you now. She has no reason not to have your child, does she?"
Ethan added, "Sylvia Schuyler told her some things before. She thinks I’m only keeping her around to have a baby, and that I’ll abandon her after she gives birth. That’s why she won’t go through with it."
Nina was speechless.
’So that’s what this is about.’
’It makes sense. Serena just recovered from a serious illness, and some of her memories haven’t returned.’
’It’s normal for her to feel insecure.’
She nodded. "Alright, I’ll go up and see her."
When Nina entered the room, she saw Serena lying face down on the bed. She walked over, sat on the edge of the bed, and called out to her.
"Serena..."
"Serena?"
Nina felt a surge of frustration. ’How can she be sleeping so soundly that I can’t wake her?’
She reached out, turned her over, and called again, "Serena, wake up."
Still no response.
Nina’s heart dropped. She rushed to the top of the stairs and shouted to the man in the living room, "Ethan, something’s wrong! Serena has fainted!"
The moment Ethan heard this, he bolted up the stairs and dashed into the room.
He scooped Serena into his arms and called out urgently, "Serena! Serena, wake up!"
When he couldn’t wake her, he anxiously carried her out, gesturing to Nina. "You drive. We need to get her to the hospital, now."
"Okay."
Once in the car, as Nina drove away, she asked worriedly, "What happened? Why did she pass out?"
"It was probably the shock. I saw her squatting on the floor, holding her head. I thought she just didn’t want to look at me. Her head probably started hurting back then."
During her last check-up, the doctor had told him that Serena was recovering well.
But he also warned that she still couldn’t handle any major shocks and that he shouldn’t let her get too emotional, or it could trigger a relapse of her condition’s side effects.
’I’m such an idiot. Why didn’t I pay more attention? I just let her faint in the room all by herself.’
’If Nina hadn’t come upstairs, she could have died and no one would have known.’
Ethan was overwhelmed with self-reproach.
He held Serena tightly in his arms, praying that she would be okay.
When they arrived at the hospital and handed Serena over to the doctors, they made sure to mention that she might be pregnant, warning them to be careful with any medication.
After checking Serena’s vital signs and confirming she wasn’t in any mortal danger, the doctors also ran a pregnancy test before finally moving her to a hospital room.
At the door of the room, the doctor informed Ethan, "She is indeed pregnant. About two weeks along."
Although this was the expected result, Ethan was still happy.
But his happiness was quickly followed by renewed worry about Serena’s physical condition.
He asked the doctor, "She had a miscarriage just a few months ago. This baby won’t be affected by that, will it?"
"Rest assured, Mr. Yardley, it won’t be affected. However, her constitution is weak, and she’s prone to fainting from stress. You’ll need to be very careful. The slightest mishap could lead to a miscarriage."
"I understand."
Ethan replied and entered the room.
Nina followed him inside.
Serena was still unconscious. The doctor said the fainting was caused by her neurological system’s response to the pain and that she should wake up after a few hours of sleep.
Ethan sat by the bed, watching over her.
Nina stood nearby and sighed. "If Serena is adamant about not having the baby, what will you do?"
Ethan’s expression was bleak, his voice low and hoarse. "What else can I do? I can only go along with her wishes."
’If she doesn’t want to, it’s not like I can force her.’
’As for the elders pressuring us in the future, we’ll just have to take it one step at a time.’
’In any case, no matter what happens, I will protect her.’
"Honestly, I think it was too soon for her to get pregnant. You should have waited until she completely trusted and loved you, and then you two could have discussed having a child."
Looking at the pale, unconscious woman on the bed, Nina’s eyes filled with heartache.
"After all, she only just woke up not long ago, and she’d forgotten you. She was finally starting to accept you, and then you pull something like this. How could she possibly accept it?"
Thinking about it now, Ethan knew it was indeed his fault.
But he truly hadn’t expected her to conceive so easily.
’It’s useless to regret it now. I can only wait for her to wake up and then try to talk things over with her properly.’
Remembering she had her own child at home, Nina said,
"You take care of her, then. I’m going to head back. If she wants anything to eat when she wakes up, let me know, and I’ll make it and bring it over."
"Okay, you go on."
...
When Serena woke up, she took in her surroundings. Everything was white.
She shifted her gaze and saw the man sitting by her bed.
Not wanting to acknowledge him, she turned to look out the window.
Seeing she was awake, Ethan quickly stood up and asked, "Serena, are you hungry? Do you want something to eat?"
Serena remained silent.
"How about I ask Nina to bring you some dumplings?"
...
"Serena, please don’t be like this."
Seeing her ignore him, her indifferent expression pushing him a thousand miles away, made Ethan’s heart ache.
Serena still didn’t speak. She knew this was a hospital room.
’So I fainted again.’
’I can’t even take care of myself. I lose control whenever I get emotional, and the pain in my head makes me pass out.’
’How can someone like me protect the child in my womb?’
’At least right now, I can’t accept this child’s arrival.’
She closed her eyes, trying hard to control her emotions.
Ethan tried again. "Serena, do you want to sit up and have some water?"
Serena found him annoyingly persistent. She shot him a cold look and asked, "I’m pregnant, aren’t I?"
She knew it. The moment they got to the hospital, he would definitely have the doctors run tests on her.
Ethan didn’t deny it. "Yes."
"Then help me arrange it. I don’t want it."
The implication was clear: she wanted an abortion.
Ethan felt his breath catch in his chest. He looked at her and said in a low voice, "Serena, can you please reconsider?"
"I won’t—"
Sitting up, she glared at him angrily. "Either we get a divorce, or we don’t have this baby. You choose."
