Chapter 156: Chapter 156: Mr. Grant, We Shall Never Meet Again

That night, Serena Yardley and Nina Thorne shared a bed, talking all night long.

The next day, after breakfast, they took the Divorce Agreement and rushed to the Civil Affairs Bureau.

Nina Thorne had arranged to meet Quinn Gardner at nine in the morning.

To their surprise, when they arrived, Quinn Gardner and Ethan Yardley were already there.

Serena Yardley hadn’t expected Ethan Yardley to come with Quinn Gardner.

And Ethan Yardley hadn’t expected Serena Yardley to be with Nina Thorne.

When the four of them met, the atmosphere was indescribably awkward.

"Serena, just wait for me here. Don’t come inside, it’s bad luck."

Nina Thorne told her friend.

Serena Yardley nodded, her eyes shooting a sharp glance at Ethan Yardley.

Ethan Yardley walked over to her but said nothing.

Holding the Divorce Agreement, Nina Thorne walked up to Quinn Gardner. "Let’s go."

Quinn Gardner didn’t hesitate. They went up the steps and into the Civil Affairs Bureau building together.

Perhaps because it was an early weekday morning, the Civil Affairs Bureau was mostly empty.

Since theirs was an uncontested divorce with no disputes, the process was quick.

As they walked out of the Civil Affairs Bureau, each holding a divorce certificate, a long-absent, genuine smile finally bloomed on Nina Thorne’s beautiful face.

Quinn Gardner, however, felt a pain like a knife twisting in his heart.

But he knew full well he had brought this upon himself. He had no one else to blame.

He took a deep breath and told the woman beside him,

"You have a week to get ready. I’ll tell my family about the divorce after you’ve left."

His parents had agreed to the divorce, but they demanded he fight for custody of their child.

Quinn Gardner knew he hadn’t lifted a finger to help raise the child. Even if he won custody, his conscience wouldn’t be clear.

So he wouldn’t fight her for it.

He would give her every penny of the compensation she was due.

"Mm."

A sudden wave of relief seemed to wash over Nina Thorne. She turned to face Quinn Gardner, a light, friendly smile on her lips.

"Farewell, Mr. Grant."

As the last word left her lips, she finally lost control of her emotions, her eyes welling up with tears.

She wasn’t crying because she still loved the man she had just divorced.

She was crying for the end of a Chapter, closing the book on more than a decade of affection.

From this day forward, they would be strangers, with nothing more to do with each other.

"Miss Thorne, I wish you and the child all the best for the future."

He replied in a gentlemanly manner but couldn’t summon the courage to look her in the eye. He turned and strode quickly away.

’He was terrified he would change his mind.’

’Terrified that, out of an unwillingness to let go, he might use all his influence to keep them, mother and son, from leaving.’

’So he had to leave. Quickly.’

’The farther away he got, the less his heart would ache.’

Ethan Yardley watched Quinn Gardner leave but didn’t follow. Instead, he got into Nina Thorne’s car, planning to take the two women home first.

Nina Thorne got into the car, divorce certificate in hand. Serena Yardley sat beside her, squeezing her hand without a word.

But Nina Thorne just laughed and said,

"Serena, don’t think I’ll be heartbroken just because I’m divorced. I actually feel... liberated. I feel so refreshed and at ease right now."

It was the truth.

Now that she was divorced, she wouldn’t have to be disgusted by the Grants’ actions anymore.

’From now on, I won’t love anyone. I’ll just focus on living a good life with Leo.’

’I’ll continue my work as an agent in the entertainment industry and focus on my career. Marriage isn’t for me. I won’t ever hope for it again.’

"Mm-hm."

Serena Yardley agreed, smiling along with her. "Then let’s go home and make some good food."

"Definitely. I’ll cook a few meals for you, Serena, and then Leo and I will be leaving. Don’t miss me too much. I’ll come back to see you when I have time."

Reaching out to pat Serena Yardley’s head, Nina Thorne looked toward the man behind the wheel.

"Ethan, after I’m gone, you have to take good care of Serena. The doctor said her constitution is weak, so you need to be especially careful during her pregnancy.

Don’t do anything to make her angry. She’s young and can be a bit moody sometimes, so just be patient with her."

Ethan Yardley could tell Nina Thorne was hurting inside.

Her words sounded more like a final farewell.

"I know," he replied in a low voice.

"Ethan, while I’m gone, if anything happens with my parents, please help keep an eye on them."

"Mm."

Nina Thorne turned back to Serena Yardley, her eyes red as she smiled at her friend.

"Remember, Serena, if you have a daughter, she’s going to be my daughter-in-law. You can’t go back on your promise."

Her voice was thick with unshed tears.

Tears in her eyes, Serena nodded. "Don’t worry, Nina, I won’t go back on my word. But why are you saying all this now? It’s not like you’re leaving this very second."

"You’re right. I just got emotional and said too much."

Nina Thorne hastily tried to hide her sadness with a smile.

Back home, she immediately headed to the kitchen to cook a final, proper meal for her dear friend.

Serena Yardley offered to help, but Nina wouldn’t let her.

Left with no other choice, Serena Yardley sat with Ethan Yardley in the living room to wait.

The thought that Nina and Quinn Gardner were really divorced made the ache in her heart unbearable, and she began to sob beside Ethan Yardley.

"Before, I thought Quinn Gardner’s actions were awful, so when Nina insisted on the divorce, I supported her completely.

But now that they’re actually divorced, I feel so awful. The thought of her not being around anymore... I suddenly can’t stand it. I wish they hadn’t gotten divorced."

If they hadn’t divorced, their two families could have been together every day, never separated.

Even without being related by blood, they had spent so much time together that they felt closer than family.

Ethan Yardley reached out and pulled the girl beside him into his arms.

"Every family has its own troubles. Since this is the path they’ve chosen, we should respect their decision."

’They were just outsiders; they had no right to interfere.’

’But no matter what happened, they would always be his best friends.’

’Both of them.’

"Ethan, we have to be okay. We have to stay together forever. No matter what happens, you have to hold on to my hand and never push me away, okay?"

Serena Yardley wrapped her arms around the man’s waist, a sudden wave of insecurity washing over her.

’She was afraid her own marriage would be difficult to sustain.’

’Afraid she wouldn’t be able to give the Yardley Family a son.’

’Even more, she was terrified the man beside her would leave her for someone else.’

"Okay."

Ethan Yardley held the woman in his arms even tighter.

But the "okay" that left his lips lacked conviction.

’The truth was, he had his own fears.’

’He was afraid Serena would find out what he’d done that night.’

’Afraid she would leave him.’

’Afraid of a world without her in it.’

’He could only hope that everything would turn out for the best.’

...

Soon, Nina Thorne had lunch ready.

During the meal, she told Ethan Yardley, "Serena and I talked all night last night and didn’t get any sleep. After lunch, take her home so she can get some proper rest."

Ethan Yardley grunted in agreement.

Serena Yardley immediately protested, "Nina, I’m not tired. Why don’t you bring Leo over to play with me?"

Nina Thorne smiled gently, her voice warm and affectionate. "Oh, Serena, you’re not just looking out for yourself anymore. You have a baby in your belly, and pregnant women absolutely need to rest well.

So, for the baby’s health, go home and take a nap in a little while. You can come back over tonight when you wake up. I’ll probably have Leo here by then."

Serena Yardley had no choice but to nod. "Alright, fine."

But she didn’t know that as soon as she went home to rest, Nina Thorne would pack her things and leave.

After this farewell, who knew when—if ever—they would meet again.
