Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Why Didn’t Your Husband Come?

Gabriel Galloway...

The man who had pursued her for a year at school, the one she went out of her way to avoid.

What was he doing at the Yardley estate?

And what was his connection to the Yardley Family?

Before Serena Yardley could react, the little girl holding her hand called out sweetly, "Youngest Uncle, I came out to get my niece-in-law."

With that, the little girl looked back at Serena Yardley and pointed to Gabriel Galloway, making an introduction.

"Niece-in-law, this is my youngest uncle. He’s my mom’s younger brother, Gabriel Galloway. My youngest uncle is handsome, isn’t he?"

Serena Yardley was speechless.

Meeting Gabriel Galloway’s gaze, her world spun. She was in utter disbelief.

Gabriel Galloway stared back at the girl before him, even more astonished when he heard what his niece had said.

The two just stared at each other.

One couldn’t believe Gabriel Galloway’s connection to the Yardley Family.

The other couldn’t believe that the girl he’d liked and pursued for a year was already married.

And not just married, but a daughter-in-law of the Yardley Family.

The Yardley Family only had one son in this generation: the renowned Ethan Yardley.

Which meant the person Serena Yardley had married was Ethan Yardley.

The very same man who gave a lecture at their school every year.

Gabriel Galloway found this hard to accept.

Seeing the two adults staring silently at each other, the little girl beside them asked curiously, "Youngest Uncle, do you know my niece-in-law?"

Serena Yardley was the first to snap out of it, and she quickly denied it.

"No, I don’t know your youngest uncle. Raina, let’s go."

Raina Yardley furrowed her delicate brows and tugged at a dazed Gabriel Galloway. "Well, Youngest Uncle, you can play by yourself for now. I’m taking my niece-in-law to see my dad."

It took Gabriel Galloway a moment to respond. "Yeah, go ahead," he said, his mind elsewhere.

"Okay. Let’s go, Niece-in-law."

Raina Yardley took Serena Yardley’s hand and skipped toward the main hall.

After taking a few steps, Serena Yardley glanced back at the man still standing in the same spot.

’It felt cruel to say I didn’t know him.’

’But at least this way, I could draw a clear line between us and make him give up.’

’There are plenty of fish in the sea; he doesn’t need to get so hung up on me.’

Soon, Raina Yardley led Serena Yardley into the castle’s main reception hall.

The luxurious and spacious hall was filled with people.

Master Yardley was there, along with his third wife, Cecilia Galloway.

Also present were Master Yardley’s four daughters, three sons-in-law, and a crowd of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Even Mason Yardley and Sophia Quinn, Ethan Yardley’s parents, were there.

For generations, the Yardley Family had only one son per generation, but many daughters. Therefore, the task of carrying on the family line fell entirely on Ethan Yardley’s shoulders.

A circle of people was gathered around Master Yardley, chatting and laughing. The family atmosphere was harmonious and warm.

When Serena Yardley and Raina Yardley arrived, none of the finely dressed people in the hall paid them any mind, until Raina shouted, "The niece-in-law is here!"

At that, every head in the room swiveled to look at Serena Yardley.

Serena Yardley felt very self-conscious.

She had never faced such a grand occasion all by herself.

As she walked toward the elders, her heart raced, and she was so nervous she could barely function.

’If I’d known, I would have just come with Uncle. At least he might have been like last time—speaking for me and protecting me. I met all the elders back then without having to say more than a few words.’

But then she remembered the current state of her relationship with him, and her spirits sank.

’Oh well. I’m already here. Even if the path ahead is full of thorns, I have to bite the bullet and walk it.’

Standing before the elders and seeing their smiling, friendly faces, Serena Yardley bowed politely and demurely.

"Hello, elders. I... I’m here to celebrate Grandfather’s birthday. I wish Grandfather good health, a long life, may all your wishes come true, and may your fortune be as vast as the eastern sea."

The circle of people remained silent, their gazes fixed on Serena Yardley like predators watching their prey.

Serena Yardley slowly raised her head. Seeing everyone just staring at her without a word, she grew even more nervous.

Rooted to the spot and frozen stiff, she was suddenly overcome with an awkwardness so intense she didn’t know what to do.

But in the next second, someone laughed. "HAHAHA, don’t all look so serious. Look, you’ve scared Ethan’s little wife so much she’s stuttering."

"Exactly. Later, Ethan will say we bullied his little wife."

Just then, Master Yardley, who was over seventy, also spoke up. "Ethan’s wife, no need for formalities. Have a seat."

As her mother-in-law, Sophia Quinn immediately waved Serena Yardley over.

"Serena, dear, come over here. Come sit with Mom."

Serena Yardley turned to look, quickly bowing again and calling out, "Father, Mother."

"Yes, have a seat. You don’t need to be so formal or so scared. Since you’re married to Ethan, you should treat this place as your own home. You shouldn’t be such a stranger in your own house."

Sophia Quinn was in her early fifties and clearly took good care of herself. Her skin was still smooth and fair, and with her kind face, she gave off an approachable air despite being covered in jewels.

Serena Yardley sat down beside her.

Immediately, the other aunts started asking, "Little Serena, how come you’re here all by yourself? Where’s your husband?"

"Yeah, isn’t your husband super protective of you? How could he let you come alone? Isn’t he afraid we’ll bully you?"

Serena Yardley looked at the aunts around her and said with a quick, polite smile, "He... he’s a little busy. He should be over once he’s finished."

"Tsk tsk, that Ethan. So busy he won’t even come to celebrate his grandfather’s birthday. He deserves a spanking."

"What can you do? Our little Ethan is very career-driven. After all, Dad’s retired, and his older brother hates managing things and is always taking his wife on vacation around the world. If he doesn’t run that huge company, who will?"

"True. Let’s not talk about him. Come on, Little Serena, we prepared some small gifts for you. Let’s take you upstairs to see them."

A few of the aunts pulled Serena Yardley to her feet and led her upstairs, talking and laughing along the way.

The remaining men continued to chat about work.

「Meanwhile.」

At The Sovereign Villa.

Ethan Yardley, who had been dressed and ready for a while, was still waiting for his assistant to drag Serena Yardley back to him.

But instead of his assistant bringing her back, he received a phone call from him.

On the call, Yannick Young said, "President Yardley, Miss Serena went back to the old family estate on her own."

"What did you say?"

"Miss Serena is already at the old estate. Do you still need me to bring her back?" Yannick Young asked tentatively.

Ethan Yardley abruptly hung up, livid with rage.

’That woman is getting more and more audacious. How dare she go back to the old estate by herself?’

’Did she go there to complain about me?’

That was the only explanation Ethan Yardley could think of. Otherwise, why would she have dared to go back alone?

Leaping to his feet, Ethan Yardley grabbed his car keys and sped back to the old estate alone.

When he arrived, the family at the old estate was having lunch.

A large group was seated in the spacious and opulent dining room, and Serena Yardley and Gabriel Galloway were among them.

Since neither of them spoke, no one would have known they knew each other.

From a short distance away, a servant announced, "Master, the Young Master is back."

Hearing this, more than a dozen pairs of eyes turned in unison to land on Ethan Yardley.

Ethan Yardley was impeccably dressed in a black suit.

He walked forward under everyone’s gaze, a hint of flippancy in his demeanor.

"You’ve all started eating already. Looks like it makes no difference to this family whether I’m here or not."

Master Yardley’s old face hardened, and he snorted.

"For someone who doesn’t come back for months, even half a year at a time, you still remember this is your home?"

Despite his sharp tongue, Ethan Yardley still politely addressed the old man, "Happy birthday, Grandfather."

"If you want me to be happy, give me a surprise."

Ethan Yardley ignored him. He knew this was another push for him to have a child.

He swept his gaze over everyone present, nodded to the elders in greeting, and then walked over to sit down next to Serena Yardley.

The moment he sat down, he turned to look at Serena Yardley, his eyes so cold they could have shot daggers.

Serena Yardley, however, didn’t dare to look him in the eye and kept her head down, focusing on her food.

Seeing that the woman was still ignoring him, Ethan Yardley leaned close to her ear and whispered, "Just you wait. I’ll deal with you later."
