Chapter 69: Chapter 69: Why Did She Commit Suicide?

Hearing the commotion at the entrance, everyone in the living room looked over simultaneously.

When they saw it was Julian Thorne, their energy seemed to drain away, and they lost interest.

Julian Thorne walked up to Ethan Yardley and asked in a cold voice, "What on earth did you do to Serena? Why did she kill herself?"

Ethan Yardley kept his head down, silent.

His whole body felt numb, as if paralyzed, to the point that he could barely register pain.

Nina Thorne, who was standing beside them, handed her brother Serena Yardley’s phone. "Serena’s last words."

Julian Thorne glanced at his sister and took the phone.

After reading the final message in the notes app, he was at a loss for words.

If Serena Yardley had truly been unable to overcome her own demons, then he really had no right to blame Ethan Yardley.

Remembering that the note mentioned someone she liked, Julian Thorne turned to Ethan Yardley again.

"Who is the man Serena liked? Did you break them up? Did you hurt him?"

Ethan Yardley’s mind was a complete fog.

He didn’t want to think about anything.

He just wanted to fall asleep, hoping that when he woke up, none of this would have happened.

When Ethan Yardley didn’t answer, Julian turned to his sister. "Do you know who the man Serena liked was?"

Nina Thorne shook her head. "I don’t know. But I don’t think Serena would hate Ethan Yardley over someone else—not so much that she’d rather die just to get away from him."

Because in her heart, Serena had always seen Ethan Yardley as her guiding light, the anchor of her life.

She was always so grateful that he had saved her.

So why would she be so desperate to leave him that she would rather die?

Turning to look at Ethan Yardley, Nina Thorne asked again, "Ethan, what did you do to the man she liked?"

Ethan Yardley remained silent, sitting with his head bowed like a lifeless puppet.

Quinn Gardner said, "Let’s give Ethan some time to calm down. We’ll send more people out to search. Until we find Serena Yardley’s body, there’s a chance she’s still alive."

"I have to get going."

Julian Thorne had no intention of telling them Serena Yardley’s whereabouts just yet.

He would wait for her to wake up and tell him the truth before deciding whether or not to inform them.

’If Serena Yardley truly wants to leave Ethan Yardley, I’ll help her.’

Once at the hospital, Julian Thorne kept a constant vigil outside the ICU, his eyes fixed on the person in the bed, who was covered in tubes.

For some reason, an indescribable feeling of unease settled over him.

His sister had told him she was an orphan.

At five years old, she had been rescued from human traffickers by Ethan Yardley. He had later placed her in an orphanage, to which he donated a million every year for her upkeep.

So, to Serena Yardley, Ethan Yardley’s kindness was a debt as heavy as a mountain.

As for who she liked, his sister had no idea either.

But who on earth was this person she loved? Who could be so important that she was willing to "return" her life to Ethan Yardley for his sake?

Julian Thorne simply couldn’t fathom how someone so young, lively, and optimistic could be driven to suicide over a matter of the heart.

"Professor Thorne, you should eat something."

His assistant returned with some food.

Julian Thorne didn’t refuse. As he ate, he asked his assistant, "Would you ever choose to die for someone?"

The assistant quickly shook his head. "No way. Only an idiot would do something like that."

Julian Thorne smiled bleakly. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

’Yes, he’s right. To take your own life for someone... that’s something only a fool would do.’

’But Serena didn’t seem like a fool at all.’

"Professor Thorne, after you’ve eaten, you should go to the set and see the director. I’ll keep watch here for you."

Julian Thorne knew that because of him, the film’s production schedule had already been delayed.

He couldn’t hold everyone back; he had to return to the set and finish filming his scenes.

...

「Alcrest. Ethan Yardley’s Villa.」

Three days had passed since Serena Yardley’s disappearance, and there was still no news of her.

In those three days, Ethan Yardley hadn’t touched a drop of water or a bite of food.

He was still sitting on the rug in front of the sofa, his face haggard and his expression bleak.

His completely vacant, almost soulless demeanor was genuinely frightening.

Mrs. Miller, having prepared yet another meal for him, approached and called out respectfully:

"Sir, please, you have to eat something. What will become of you if you go on like this?"

Ethan Yardley held his phone in his hand.

On the screen was a photo of Serena Yardley, her face lit up with a brilliant smile.

His eyes were hollow as he leaned back, asking Mrs. Miller in a strengthless voice, "When I wasn’t home... was she happy?"

Mrs. Miller nodded. "Miss Serena was always such a lively, cheerful person, always laughing. But ever since you brought Miss Schuyler home, I rarely saw her smile."

"..."

’So it’s true. I’m the one who killed Serena.’

’It wasn’t because she was in love with someone else. She didn’t leave me for another man.’

’Ethan Yardley, oh, Ethan Yardley... you truly deserve a thousand deaths.’

He raised a hand in a dismissive wave at Mrs. Miller, then leaned back again as his mind began to drift, consciousness fading.

In the haze clouding his vision, he saw countless images of the two of them together.

The memories played out like scenes from a movie, appearing before him, frame by vivid frame.

"Uncle, you don’t have to be so... you know... with me. I’m willing to do whatever you want."

"Uncle, you have such a great body. Can I touch your abs?"

"Uncle, can I kiss you?"

"Uncle, please don’t leave me."

"Uncle, you’re mine."

"Uncle, Serena’s hurt... I want a hug."

"Uncle... Uncle..."

Her sweet, tender voice echoed in his ears, over and over.

Ethan Yardley numbly closed his eyes, his mind filled with the indelible image of her adorable, radiant face—so round, fair, and pretty.

’Such a wonderful Serena... gone, just like that.’

’Ethan Yardley, do you feel it now? Without her by your side, life is worse than death.’

He tilted his head back, and tears streamed from the corners of his eyes. The numbness that had protected his heart receded, replaced once more by a searing, tearing pain.

But he continued to play dead.

He refused to wake up and accept any of it.

’How could his Serena just abandon him like this, without his permission?’

’His Serena... if only she could come back, how wonderful it would be.’

...

On the fifth day of her hospital stay, Serena Yardley finally woke up.

The assistant was so excited he immediately called Julian Thorne.

Julian Thorne once again dropped everything with the cast and crew, rushing frantically to the hospital.

At the door to her room, the doctor told Julian Thorne, "The patient is very lucky. She pulled through. However, the injury to the back of her head is severe, and there may be numerous complications."

Before the doctor could finish his instructions, Julian Thorne rushed into the room, his eyes landing joyfully on the woman in the bed, who had opened her eyes.

He was panting as he called out her name. "Serena..."

On the bed, Serena Yardley couldn’t lie flat due to the severe injury to the back of her head. She was propped up in a sitting position, supported by medical equipment.

Although she was awake, she seemed unresponsive.

Even as Julian Thorne stood before her, she showed no reaction.

Even so, Julian Thorne was overjoyed.

He slowly sat down beside Serena Yardley and spoke to her softly.

"It’s so good that you’re awake. We’re in no rush. Just rest and recover slowly. You’ll get better one day."

Serena Yardley’s eyes shifted slightly, though it was impossible to tell if it was a response to his words.

Julian Thorne gave a wry smile and continued.

"So you need to be strong. Don’t let me down, alright? And don’t you dare think about dying again, or I’ll be heartbroken."
