Sir, Please Sign Here to Get a Divorce-Chapter 86: Can We Get a Divorce?
Ethan Yardley knew Serena was still wary of him.
He didn’t dare take another step forward. Instead, he pulled out his phone, opened the photo of their marriage certificate that Mrs. Miller had sent him, and carefully held it out to her.
"Take a look at this first. Then you can answer me."
Seeing him hold out the phone, Serena Yardley reached out and took it.
She glanced down at the screen, and her pupils suddenly dilated.
She couldn’t quite believe it, staring at it again and again.
When she confirmed that it was indeed a marriage certificate, and the people in the photo were her and the man standing before her, Serena Yardley was stunned.
’Am I really Ethan Yardley’s wife?’
’Then why don’t I recognize Ethan Yardley at all, but I only remember Julian Thorne?’
’I clearly remember Julian Thorne saving me, falling for him, and then marrying him.’
’Why is it Ethan Yardley now?’
Serena Yardley still found it hard to accept. She looked up at Ethan Yardley and asked,
"You Photoshopped this marriage certificate, didn’t you? The whole point is to cover up the fact that Julian Thorne cheated on me."
Ethan Yardley remained standing two meters away, not daring to make a move. He spoke softly,
"Please don’t get worked up. Scroll through the other photos on my phone."
Serena Yardley did as he said and continued to scroll through the photos.
As she looked, she was dumbfounded all over again.
Ethan Yardley’s photo album was full of pictures of her.
But she had no memory of when any of them were taken.
There were also many photos of the two of them together.
’So, am I really Ethan Yardley’s wife?’
Still finding it hard to believe, Serena Yardley looked up at the man by her bed and asked coldly,
"Then why don’t I remember you? Why do I only remember Julian Thorne?"
Ethan Yardley patiently explained,
"Because after your accident, Julian Thorne was the one who saved you. He was the first person you saw when you opened your eyes, so you subconsciously mistook him for me."
Serena Yardley didn’t believe him.
"Where’s Julian Thorne?" she asked again.
"He left."
"Why did he leave? Why didn’t he explain things to me clearly?"
Serena Yardley was starting to get agitated again.
Fearing her headache would return, Ethan Yardley quickly tried to soothe her.
"If you don’t believe me, you can call and ask him. I have his number in my contacts."
Serena Yardley didn’t make the call. She looked at Ethan Yardley and continued questioning him.
"Why did I have an accident? Someone as powerful as you... why couldn’t you protect me?"
Ethan Yardley, "..."
Her question left him speechless.
’What am I supposed to say?’
’Should I tell her that she jumped into the river because she was heartbroken and distraught after seeing Sylvia Schuyler kiss me?’
’I definitely can’t say that.’
After a moment’s thought, Ethan Yardley said casually,
"I took you with me to inspect a project in the countryside. You wandered off on your own and accidentally fell into a river."
He held his breath, terrified she still wouldn’t believe him.
Terrified she would cause a scene and try to leave him again.
A look of sorrow crossed his face as he continued in a soft voice,
"Serena, I’m sorry. I failed to protect you. It’s my fault. But you can’t be with Julian Thorne. Otherwise, my heart will break."
Serena Yardley, "..."
She looked at the tall man before her. She could clearly sense his noble status, that he was someone far above her station.
But right now, he was acting so humbly that she suddenly didn’t know what to do.
’If what they’re saying is true, then I really can’t be with Julian Thorne.’
’But I can’t be with this man in front of me, either.’
’He’s too noble. I’m not good enough for him.’
"I believe what you’re saying, but can you promise me one thing?"
Seeing that she believed him, Ethan Yardley let out a sigh of relief. "Tell me. I’ll promise you anything."
"I don’t remember you. I can’t recall anything about you. And right now, I have no feelings for you, let alone any affection. Can we get a divorce?"
"What did you say?"
Ethan Yardley’s heart sank. He stared at her, stunned.
Serena Yardley looked back at him. "Please, you have to agree. Otherwise, I’ll be under too much pressure."
’I don’t know why we even got married.’ 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
’But it definitely couldn’t have been for love.’
’How could such an outstanding, wealthy man fall in love with an orphan like me who has nothing?’
’I can’t climb that high. I have to leave him.’
"Serena, don’t feel pressured."
Ethan Yardley grew anxious, his voice becoming hoarse. "I can give you anything you want, but a divorce is the one thing I can’t agree to."
"Or... just give me some time. If I can’t make you fall in love with me again, then you can leave. Can you do that?"
He was begging her.
The humility he showed was something Ethan Yardley had never displayed in his entire life.
Seeing how sincere he was, Serena Yardley hesitated.
Ethan Yardley’s eyes were bloodshot, as if burning, filled with raw pain.
"Serena, I’ve already lost you twice. I don’t want to lose you again.
Please, don’t leave me. Everything before was my fault. I didn’t take care of you, didn’t protect you.
But this time, I swear I’ll give you my all and treat you right."
In the past, he had liked her, so he had set a trap for her to fall into.
Perhaps because he had won her over too easily, he had stopped considering her feelings ever since Sylvia Schuyler appeared.
But things were different now.
He truly loved her.
Only after losing her did he realize how much his heart ached.
His Serena had, in fact, long been deeply rooted in his heart; he just hadn’t realized it.
Now that his Serena wanted to leave him, how could he possibly let her go?
Serena Yardley had always been soft-hearted.
Especially with a tall man standing before her, his face etched with sorrow, his voice hoarse, looking as if he were one step away from kneeling and begging.
After some thought, she replied, "Alright. I’ll give you time."
Joy surged in Ethan Yardley’s heart. He was so emotional he didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. He quickly changed the subject.
"Serena, are you hungry? I’ll have someone bring food over right away."
Serena Yardley nodded. "Mhm. And can you ask Nina to come over too?"
"Okay, I’ll call Nina Thorne right now."
While making the call, he looked at her on the bed and asked, "Serena, do you want to get up? Your shoes are here. Or I can carry you to the bathroom?"
This man, who had seemed so aloof in her eyes, was suddenly being so attentive, and it made Serena Yardley very uncomfortable.
"I can do it myself," she said. "You can go about your business."
Fearing he was making her uncomfortable, Ethan Yardley didn’t press the issue.
After calling Nina Thorne, he had someone deliver food.
By the time all the food was arranged, Serena Yardley had finished washing up and came to sit at the dining table.
Ethan Yardley eagerly yet carefully placed food on her plate.
"Even though we’re by the sea, you’re just recovering from a serious illness, so you can’t eat too much seafood. I had them make these instead. Try them, and if they’re not to your liking, I’ll have them bring something else."
"I’m not a picky eater. This is fine."
Serena Yardley lowered her head and took a few bites, then noticed the man sitting across from her was staring at her.
His gaze made her very uncomfortable.
She kept her head down as she ate and said, "Could you please not stare at me? Or maybe just leave for a bit?"
Ethan Yardley quickly averted his gaze. "I’ll be on the balcony, then. You go ahead and eat."
Afraid of making her uncomfortable, he quickly got up and left.
When Serena Yardley saw that he had really gone to stand on the balcony, she didn’t pay him any more mind.
Soon, Nina Thorne rushed over.
The moment she walked in, she called out with concern, "Serena! Serena, are you feeling better?"
Serena Yardley replied from the dining table, "Nina, I’m feeling better."
When Nina Thorne was next to her, Serena Yardley leaned in and asked in a low voice, "Is Ethan Yardley really my husband?"
Nina Thorne smiled and nodded, patting Serena Yardley’s head as she replied,
"Yes, he is. Did he tell you everything?"
"Mhm."
"So, Serena, do you have any other doubts?"
Ethan Yardley had already explained away her doubts, so she didn’t have any more questions.
Serena Yardley shook her head and said to Nina Thorne, "No. Nina, eat with me. After we eat, let’s go outside and look at the stars."
"Okay."
Nina Thorne glanced at the man on the balcony, then back at the person beside her.
’Looks like Serena isn’t pushing Ethan away anymore, right?’
Just then, on the balcony, Ethan Yardley received a call from Sylvia Schuyler.
He glanced at the two women inside, then answered the call and asked coldly, "What is it?"
Sylvia Schuyler laughed and said, "Ethan, I heard you two are vacationing on Phantom Isle. I just arrived. Can you come pick me up at the pier?"
