Chapter 357: In The Wind

He and Emily had come awake at exactly the same time. Scaring the nurses who had been attending to them almost half to death with the way their eyes had opened up in unison.

But Derek had barely been able to see the humor in the situation because back then,

he’d had very important information to share and the first words out of his mouth had been Get me a police officer.

And within minutes, Marge had been by their side, notebook out as she took notes, a recorder placed between him and Emily as they had told her everything that they knew. Not leaving a thing out when it came to detailing how his uncle had tried to kill them.

They might not have been able to bury him for real. But they had given the figurative sense of the word a go, as they had told the tale.

That should have been the end of everything. Sharing what had happened twenty years before should have just been an additional nail in his uncle’s coffin. His uncle should have been in a jail cell at that very moment. Regretting every choice that he had ever made in his life. From waking up in the morning, to the awful cologne that he liked so much.

But their mothers had messed it all up.

Looking over at the two women, Derek wanted to be angry, but he found that he could not. He was too busy being terrified on their behalf, to do that.

"Did the two of you seriously go over to confront a murderer with no backup whatsoever?" Derek asked, his ribs protesting the near yell. Emily’s calming touch helping him settle back down.

Instead of answering, Jane Molson and his mother huddled closer. Acting like they were kids who had done something wrong, and were hoping that the adult would just let it go and not keep pressing the matter. Derek took a deep calming breath, his bruised ribs protesting.

But it was either that or start yelling. And he was pretty sure if he did that, it would be more than his ribs complaining. His entire body would go on a riot.

What made you guys think that was a good idea? Emily’s voice came. Derek was glad for her taking over. He had no idea what the next words out of his mouth would have been. But they would not have been anything complimentary.

"Do you realize how much danger you put yourselves in? We could have lost you!" At that, his mother’s head snapped up.

"The two of you should not be acting so high and mighty. You are the ones who went to a warehouse without any backup while investigating a case that you should have left alone,"

Cassandra Haven said, and Derek had to scoff. Was she seriously trying to defend their dangerous decision "Mother, are you seriously trying to say that the two of us going to a warehouse, where we thought there would be no danger, versus the two of you going to confront someone that you suspected of killing your husbands and then coming after your children are the same thing?" His mother bit her bottom lip, and nodded a defiant look in her eyes.

If he could have, Derek would have been on his feet. Jumping up and down and yelling his disbelief at the top of his lungs. How did her reasoning make any sense to her?!

He barely managed to resist the urge to tut at her like a disappointed grandmother. Waking up to find that their moms had been behaving like children, was a very trying experience.

Their moms were elders here.

He had to keep reminding himself of that, even though they had made a monumentally foolish decision in going after his uncle. They were still elders, they needed to be respected.

"Please don’t ever do that again," He finally settled on saying, his voice breaking over the words. Great. Now he was about to cry.

Before he knew what was happening, his mother was suddenly there. Wiping a single tear from his face, clearly wanting to hug him again, but wary of hurting him. Especially after their enthusiastic, but ill advised reunion earlier. Reaching up, Derek pulled her close, not even caring that it made his aches and pains worse.

Looking over at Emily and her mother, he found them doing the same. When the hugs finally broke apart, the two of them looked at their mothers.

And Derek addressed the issue that had caused him to be so upset in the first place.

"After your confrontation with him, what happened? Seeing that the two of you are here unharmed, I think that it went relatively well, right?" His mother nodded.

The soft look in her eyes giving way to something colder as she began recounting events.

When she finished, she looked over at the two of them.

"Jane and I were not able to get him to confess, but I think that when the hospital called, he was on the verge of spilling everything," She said, and Derek nodded.

"Even if you two might have made him anxious by storming into his place. He can still be caught, we just have to wait for the police to do their job,"

No sooner had Derek said that, there was a knock on the door, and detective Marge walked in.

She did not bother with pleasantries. Getting straight to the point.

"We have a problem," She said, and Derek’s heart sank.

"It seems that Sebastian Haven has fled the country and he has gone to a place that does not have an extradition treaty with us,"

"Something must have set him off or maybe he had someone here because it seems that he left only a few hours ago,"

Derek looked over at their moms. The two women seemed to realize the same time that he and Emily did that the stunt that they had pulled had been enough to scare his uncle into fleeing ahead of time.

After listening to Marge explaining a bit more what the possible choices they had were now that his uncle had made such a move. The four of them were once again left alone in the room as Marge made her way out. Once she was gone. The silence could have been cut with a knife.

"That weasel took the chance to run as soon as we left," Cassandra hissed and Derek rubbed at his eyes, feeling unbelievably tired. He had been awake for way too long. He needed some rest.

But the fact that his uncle was a free man out there, was making it hard for him to just close his eyes, and rest. freewebnσvel.cѳm
