Special Forces Medic-Chapter 786 - 753: Between Brothers
There are fewer people who enter above the second floor of the City Police Department. Wu Shuang’s office is on the third floor, something Mu Rongyun specifically requested for convenient treatment. It serves to avoid attracting attention and has fewer visitors, allowing him to address emergencies quickly. More importantly, he’s managed to set up a small, simple surgery room in an extra room on the third floor for unforeseen needs.
"Let’s go to my room." Because of such arrangements, Mu Rongyun’s room had to be moved from the third floor to the attic. He didn’t mind this as sunlight could still come in through the window slanting from the roof.
The first time Xiao Lin entered Mu Rongyun’s room, his feelings were complicated. Sometimes he wondered if it weren’t for Wu Shuang, what their situation would be like. Would there be such a time of peaceful coexistence? Probably not. He didn’t know how great the power of love truly was, but it could indeed change a person.
"I’ve promised Wu Shuang not to have any disputes with you." Xiao Lin was the first to express his stance. In this empty room, there could actually be many living supplies, yet now it seemed there was only a bed, a writing desk, a wardrobe, a single sofa, and a few medical books.
Xiao Lin casually picked up a book and began reading. "The virus is concentrated in the lungs. Have you noticed this as well?"
"There’s less than a month left. What’s your plan?" Mu Rongyun didn’t answer Xiao Lin’s question. Wu Shuang’s lungs were still in the early symptom stage, and the cause would be from Fourth Master’s medication. Without fully analyzing its structure, he wouldn’t express any opinion.
"Take me to Fourth Master, and I’ll handle the rest. If my blood can save Wu Shuang, I’ll give it all to you, but my blood isn’t useful for her."
"What exactly can your blood do?"
"I’m also very curious. She’s so persistent about this reason." Xiao Lin was equally helpless. He felt as though his blood, aside from benefiting himself, was only for detoxification. "Inside Wu Shuang’s body, there must be other substances besides toxins. Otherwise, my blood wouldn’t clear everything."
"She can’t wait a month."
"Twenty days, I need this time to handle matters in the North District." Twenty days felt tight for Xiao Lin, and sporadic evidence would amount to nothing without Yan Juanjuan. "Fourth Master is the North District’s biggest hidden handler. Even if you don’t tell me her whereabouts, I’ll still find it, just draw out the time to the hotel."
"I’ll come to you in twenty days."
"I want to ask you a question." Xiao Lin hesitated for a moment. The look he gave Mu Rongyun was complex. "What does obtaining the Rose Staff mean to you?"
Mu Rongyun scoffed disdainfully, standing by the window under the sloped roof. Sunlight formed a halo around him. "Those who acquire the Staff and Dharma Seal will lead the entire underworld. Who can resist such rumors? If I want to defeat the Xiao Family, I must have enough power to contend with you. You’re a formidable opponent. If possible, I’d rather not be your enemy, but Xiao Zhenfeng must die."
"If that’s the case, you and I will surely become enemies. Although I’m not sure why Father left you out there, he’s always been my father. Even if you’re my brother, if you threaten family safety, I won’t hold back."
"Brother?" Mu Rongyun raised his usual cold and proud demeanor again. After removing his glasses, he carried a familiar aura to Xiao Lin. "I’ve never been a part of the Xiao Family, so don’t sell family ties under such pretexts. I’m not buying it."
"Deny it all you want, your blood still carries that of the Xiao Family. Having identity means nothing; Father finds another Mu Rongyun. If you can, avoid facing him directly."
"Another Mu Rongyun?" He sneered, audibly. "I look forward to the moment they meet."
"You... you know that Mu Rongyun?" Xiao Lin hesitated, considering the possibility. Two people named Mu Rongyun must have some connection.
"Leave matters that don’t concern you well alone. Don’t blame me for not warning you. If you can, avoid running into Mu Rongyun, and if you do, steer clear of him." The rare advice conveyed from Mu Rongyun’s mouth, Xiao Lin interpreted as a form of concern. He wasn’t entirely unfeeling, at least he began to show some change.
"Xiao Mu, he..." Mu Rongyun suddenly looked up at Xiao Lin. "Rest assured, he’s fine. I just want to say, no matter what you do, don’t drag him down. He’s not me. At a certain standpoint, no one will support him."
Xiao Lin spoke subtly. In the Xiao Family, this was how it was; without a stance, one is meant for elimination. Even if you’re currently in a high position, once you’re down, you’re subject to slaughter, until you climb back up someday. The principle of ’to the victor go the spoils’ is the survival rule of the Xiao Family, a legacy established by ancestors. Those branded as traitors lose their competitive qualifications; even surviving slaughter, you’re still an executioner. Xiao Mu hadn’t reached the point of expulsion yet, but constant monitoring was inevitable.
"Ha ha, the Xiao Family’s law, huh? Is surviving in such an unfeeling environment fun or heartwarming? I admire your luck that those old perverts didn’t end you."
Luck! Xiao Lin couldn’t imagine how Mu Rongyun was familiar with Xiao Family affairs. Those bleak and indifferent experiences accompanied his childhood step by step. Receiving paternal love was constructed on the basis of being the successful one, the survivor from countless poisons, the one who emerged victorious over the ravenous beasts.
"If possible, I wish it wasn’t that man’s blood flowing through me." In Xiao Lin’s silence, Mu Rongyun quietly said something he could understand, yet couldn’t comprehend fully.
"What exactly did Father do back then?"
"What did he do? Why don’t you go ask those old guys yourself? Xiao Zhenfeng is just a pitiful wretch living under their control his entire life." Mu Rongyun suddenly laughed. "Xiao Lin, I truly want to see how you protect your woman from harm."
"What do you mean?" Xiao Lin frowned, clearly aware that Mu Rongyun was referring to Xia Xue. "Don’t drag innocent people into the issues between you and me."
"Save that line for the Xiao Family. I’m not interested in your personal life, whether it’s the Staff or the Dharma Seal, I will get them at all costs."
"Mu Rongyun, my tolerance for you is limited to you not harming my family and relatives. Don’t push my limits." Xiao Lin wanted to step forward and grab his collar, but he held back.
"Family? Relatives? Don’t I count at this point?" Mu Rongyun leaned sideways on the bed. "I’ll only give you fifteen days."
"That’s enough!"
The conversation felt abruptly cut before the discomfort could spread further. Xiao Lin chose to leave, even though he wished he could have more time to connect with this brother he barely knew, hoping to change the negative state of the past. Yet, the awkwardness was unavoidable.
Mu Rongyun’s colder attitude than usual was a slight blow to Xiao Lin’s self-esteem. With Yan Fengying’s death report in hand, he sat in the car for a long time, staring at a spot, pondering endlessly. He had just overlooked something. Opening the car door, he quickly ran towards the police department’s loft.
As he pushed open the tightly closed door, Mu Rongyun was mixing chemicals at the only table. Xiao Lin, out of breath, slammed the door shut.
"You should knock before entering. It’s basic courtesy." Putting down the test tube, Mu Rongyun turned around.
"Do you also know how to mix chemicals? What’s your relationship with Mu Rongyun, and with Fourth Master, what’s your connection?" Xiao Lin noticed the laboratory tools on the table, realizing it was empty just moments ago.
Under the alcohol lamp, the experiment was smoking, and the liquid inside was boiling. "Wu Shuang looks much better than before. Is it because of your chemicals?"
"Your herbal medicine was too strong and not suitable for her. I just extracted the essence from the plant materials, allowing her to absorb it better." Mu Rongyun adjusted the glasses on his nose. "Did you come back just for this?"
"Yan Fengying died from drowning?"
"The head had severe injuries! The assumed scenario is that when the other party was dealing with the body, Yan Fengying wasn’t truly dead but unconscious, making it impossible for her to survive in seawater."
"There’s another point in the report—she showed signs of poisoning!"
"The chronic poison erosion must have been present much earlier. Small doses wouldn’t have much effect on the body, but accumulating over time would slowly disrupt bodily functions, ultimately leading to a sudden death from heart failure. I don’t need to explain this; you should understand."
"Is there any problem with your report?"
"What do you mean by asking me this?"
"Xiao Mei’s autopsy report, I want to know, is that body really Xiao Mei’s?" Xiao Lin suddenly recalled something that the mentor had said before. Squinting, he stared at Mu Rongyun, contemplating whether such a hypothesis was possible. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
"Based on the deceased’s skull and bone age to simulate, the figure is Xiao Mei herself. This is the fact. Do you have any doubts?"
"If the problem didn’t occur on your end, then there must be ghosts involved." Xiao Lin mumbled to himself.
"As the heir of the Xiao Family, you believe in that?"
"Perhaps you have a better explanation. Come with me." Without hesitation, Xiao Lin grabbed Mu Rongyun’s hand and ran out.
"Hey, where are you going?" Wu Shuang, just coming out of the office, saw Mu Rongyun being pulled downstairs by Xiao Lin without stopping, as they ran straight out of the building.
"I’ll explain when I get back." Mu Rongyun couldn’t shake off Xiao Lin’s hand and shouted to Wu Shuang behind him.
Re-entering Xiao Mei’s room, there was a noticeable change. Who had been here? (To be continued. If you enjoy this work, feel free to visit Qidian (qidian.com) to vote for recommendations and monthly tickets. Your support is my greatest motivation.)
