Chapter 90: It’s thanks to a certain elf...

Felix, Felix, Felix!

The distant voice became clear at the third instance. Hearing his name being called out with a shout was enough to wake him from his deep nap.

The last thing he remembered was walking the near-empty streets with Eos, before settling down in a pleasant park and taking refuge under an oak tree, atop soft grass.

After confirming that the mysterious presence watching them was no longer felt, the two went on to chat.

Eventually, Felix became too tired to continue chatting and fell asleep halfway through the conversation, leaving Eos with his sleeping face.

"Wah..?" Felix asked weakly, his eyes still glued shut from the buildup of dirt.

Eos grabbed onto his hands. "It’s almost midnight, hurry!"

Mud kite?...

Oh, midnight. I slept for that long? This isn’t good for my sleep schedule—

Pull.

Eos surprised Felix by suddenly pulling him up to stand before dragging him through the streets like wheeled luggage.

It took a while for Felix to recover, but when he finally did, his eyes were greeted with glimmers of light.

It was as if the entire city was in flames, but it wasn’t.

After a short while of being dragged, the two arrived at the main street, where these lights were at their most luscious and bright.

Is this the festival she was talking about?

So many people crowded the streets, but they did not dare step foot into the main street where the parade paraded.

The sight of interesting costumes, the tiny explosions that made puffs of rainbows, the ember-like papers littering the air as they fluttered around everyone’s voices.

The singing.

The people.

The symbols.

It was enough that Felix might just forcibly stop there and watch.

It was as if the gloomy and depressing city saved up its entire grievances and screamed them all out in the form of this festival.

But.

She’s still running? Felix raised one of his eyebrows in confusion.

He slightly gripped her hand and asked, "Aren’t we going to watch and enjoy the festival?"

. . .

Eos didn’t respond. She looked dead ahead, completely ignoring the amazing scenery right beside her.

And surprisingly enough, her expression was worried. Worried that she’d miss something even more important.

And why did she have to bring Felix along with her?

Felix didn’t try talking to her again or ask any follow-up questions.

. . .

After ten minutes of sprinting together.

This place is?

Felix became even more confused when he saw the entrance to the graveyard he had visited ever since coming to this city.

But what was even more shocking to him was that...

It was completely empty, and the street lamps that dotted the entire graveyard to keep it lit even at night were completely dead.

I guess it’s a part of their culture. It can’t be a coincidence, Felix thought, glad that this wasn’t unintentional.

Making a parade for the deceased, just to ignore the deceased, is such a pathetic excuse for the living.

"Hah." Eos released her grip before suddenly collapsing to the ground.

She panted heavily as if life itself was oozing out of her.

She couldn’t handle sprinting for such a long time!

Felix kneeled down beside her. "Are you alright?"

Eos breathed and sweated heavily, but she managed to speak with a raspy breath. "We can’t make it in time."

The elf stared into the void of the graveyard.

Felix followed her gaze and also stared, then without thinking—

"A.. huh? Eh?" Eos blurted out, unable to comprehend the feeling.

Resting atop Felix’s arm, she looked directly into his eyes, and at that moment, Eos knew exactly what those eyes were saying.

I am at your service.

"Where to, Eos?"

It took her a while to process it, but she eventually pointed straight ahead. "Over there. Just go straight."

"Brace yourself, then."

Felix released the restrictions on his essence and gathered it to his heart, then to his legs.

It happened so fast, but Eos already saw the sprawling city beneath her like a glowing cobweb of flickering lights.

But she didn’t flinch at the sight. Rather, she too gathered her essence and started forming a bright ball of light over her palm.

Once Felix’s momentum ceased, they almost floated in the sky like a cloud.

Eos threw her light into the sky, making it spread over the horizon like one massive firework that brought dawn unto a deep void.

"I’ve never seen fire magic do that before," Felix said in awe.

"I did that so you could see your landing!

Please don’t destroy someone’s resting place," Eos quickly said.

Fortunately, Felix landed gracefully onto an empty patch of grass that wasn’t occupied.

"One more jump will do," Eos pointed straight ahead again.

After another great leap forward and another graceful landing, Eos tapped Felix’s chest.

Carefully letting her go from his arms, Felix watched as the fire above the graveyard died out, leaving it in a deep void once more.

It was really hard to see anything, especially on a moonless night, and the only source of light was the whirlpool of stars beyond the skies.

Felix followed the elf for a few dozen paces before stopping in front of what felt like a small hill.

Where is this place... But I’m pretty sure we’re still within the graveyard areas.

. . .

Why’d she stop?

Eos paused her steps, but then resumed walking up the hill.

"We’re here," Eos said as she turned to face Felix.

She grabbed his hand and pulled him closer.

"Do you know what this place is?"

"Nope," Felix answered flatly.

Eos sighed and guided Felix’s hand to touch something.

"Tell me what it is," Eos questioned, her breath touching Felix’s ears.

It’s rough... Feels dry though... "...is it... a tree?"

There wasn’t a reply from Eos, meaning he was right. Felix smiled to himself for being correct.

"Hm... Let’s say that this tree is a very special tree.

Sit with me."

Eos slowly sat on the grass, facing Felix, who followed her lead.

"Resonate with me."

Resonate?! Felix immediately got flustered, knowing what resonating meant.

Eos laughed a bit. "I’m not asking you to spill everything out. All we need is the connection, and that’s it.

So don’t sneak into my memories, alright?"

"...Very well."

Felix took a deep breath.

Resonating is the ultimate form of connection.

Tonight, he would remove all the hatred inside of him and clear up the fog blurring his vision.

I will resonate with Eos, an elf.

Because I trust her unconditionally.

"I’m ready."

The two didn’t need to speak at that point, as they drew their foreheads closer together while holding hands.

I’ve only resonated with a few people in my life, so this is still weird...

The lines between thoughts and reality suddenly began to blur as the space around them began to feel more like a thick soup made from essence.

. . .

A pair of warm hands touched the side of his head before he was pushed away.

"Slowly open your eyes," Eos’ voice rang inside Felix’s mind.

He opened them as she instructed.

A light blue color was the only thing his mind could use to describe what he was seeing around him.

It was like frozen winds, but it wasn’t cold, nor was it windy. Everything around him glowed with that same soft blue haze that felt warm to the touch.

Even the grass he sat upon, and the tree as well.

Its size wasn’t grand, but its leaves were like raindrops frozen in midair, swaying softly like tiny tentacles of light.

And then there were the figures around them. No... people!

The knight’s creed according to Yaromech.

Don’t cuss—

"Holy shit."

Eos laughed at Felix. "I didn’t expect that to come out so suddenly."

"Me too..."

Felix began to walk around the area as Eos followed closely from behind.

He went to a knight-looking fellow, who appeared to be speaking to a group of onlookers.

Felix could see the figure, but the figure didn’t seem to acknowledge his presence, and yet... that knight felt so real.

He couldn’t describe what he was seeing until he looked at the tombstone beside the knight.

+Here lies Vermouth Lionheart+

Vermouth? Isn’t he one of the famous knights of the old generation?

Felix couldn’t believe it until he looked at the figure once more. "I’ll be damned... it really is Vermouth."

Eos came into his vision. "There are many other people like that here. The city of burials has buried many heroes that have long since passed."

"For real?!" Felix drew a big smile. "I don’t care if they can’t see me. You’re telling me I can meet the legends here?!"

The elf shook her head and laughed a bit more before drawing closer. "Felix... is that really what I brought you here for?"

"What do you mean—

. . .

Before he knew it, tears started gushing out of his eyes like a waterfall.

His breathing became almost uncontrollable as his hand started shaking near his eyes.

Then, in a split second, he was already far away from Eos.

Never in his life had he run so fast before.

The blues around him stretched as he pushed his body to its absolute limits. If it meant seeing them one last time, then he would gladly pledge his soul to run even faster.

There they are!

Like a tiger jumping its prey, Felix crashed into someone with a big hug.

"Argh! Who the heck—?"

"Hey, it’s the captain!"

"Forget that, how in the hell is he here?"

"Did he also kick the bucket?"

"Nah, it’s hard to kill him."

When he heard their voices, he screamed in pain and absolute anguish.
