Chapter 267: This Fool

After finishing off the wyvern, Aren consumed it and then summoned it. He flew on its back, heading toward the mountain with his massive shadow army following.

Athena was already ahead, but when she spotted Aren behind, she waited for him to get close, and when he did, she flew beside him.

Aren looked down at the mountain and there he noticed that a ton of awakened had also dealt with the waves and made it through. They were close to the mountain now.

The issue now was the fact that closer to the mountain, there were more monsters and they were attacking with even more viciousness.

"Let’s keep ourselves above," Aren said, wanting to ensure that they flew above it all, but suddenly, the angel pulled her sword from the mountain, her head turned and looked right at Aren and Athena.

"Shit, shit, shit," Aren cursed in quick succession. He immediately ordered the wyverns to fly downward, but that wasn’t fast enough as the angel swung her blade so fast that a massive shockwave ripped in every direction even after they managed to evade it.

The force of the blast slammed into Aren and Athena, throwing them apart and off their shadows.

"Shit, that’s powerful," Aren commented while free falling. He looked over to find Athena. She was falling several meters away from him.

He reacted fast enough, using tendrils to grab her and ensure that he stopped her from falling.

The both of them dropped to the ground. Luckily, nothing happened to either of them.

"Seems like using the air won’t work," Aren said.

He looked around and saw a group of awakened there, a total of six, three ladies and three dudes. They had just managed to take down a wave of monsters that had come.

The leader, who was a young lady in full fitting armour, looked their way. She had purple hair and beautiful eyes, a stunning pale face, but the stain of blood was on it. She flicked her sword and the blood fell off it and onto the ground.

"Who are you?" she asked.

"Awakened, like you," Aren replied casually, then he turned to look at the mountain. Small talk wasn’t really his issue right now.

The lady pulled her blade into the air and then hacked down when Aren looked away. The cut was extremely fast and from that distance managed to reach Aren, but Aren reacted fast, moving out of the way at an impressive speed, evading the attack completely.

He looked at her with his brow raised. "And what’s that for?" he asked.

"You are looking at the mountain. I should take it that you have plans to reach the angel first, right?" she asked, but Aren could already tell that she had deduced that as her final response, whatever he said would be a lie to her.

"Yeah, so?" he asked, turning to look at her.

In that moment, every member of the six got on guard, ready to take Aren down.

"Well, I can’t allow you to do that. Whatever reward waits for us there, I’ll be the first to get it," she said, her voice confident and calm.

"Don’t you see it?" Aren asked.

"See what?" she asked.

"They want this outcome. They want everyone to fight against themselves and kill themselves. Have you not noticed that the monsters aren’t all that strong? The main enemy is ourselves," Aren said casually.

She looked at him for a few seconds, as if thinking about what he said, but then she pointed her sword at him again, the blade gleaming under the sun.

"If that’s the case, then I’m willing to cut down whoever tries to get it. The reward belongs to me," she said. There was no shake or hesitation in her voice, and that was when Aren realized something. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

He had been holding onto the mentality that the awakened still had some humanity and would at least not want to kill themselves, but it turned out that he was wrong. Not only were they willing to do it, they also didn’t care anymore. Life had become something expendable for their goals.

This was a bit of a hard pill for Aren to swallow, but he had expected something like this to happen along the lines.

He took a deep breath and then turned to Athena. "Let’s go." He turned and walked towards the mountain, wanting to leave the group behind, but was it ever that simple?

The leader launched forward. She was fast and like a bullet as she attacked with a wide slash.

"Now why did you have to go and do that?" Aren asked as he turned around, using his wild guard to block the attack. His eyes flashed red for a moment as he punched her right in the gut, the force of the punch so powerful that even with her high level armor, it slammed into her body.

She arched there, coughing up spit and blood, before her body was immediately hurled backwards. Her followers rushed to catch her in the air.

She pushed them off her and got to her feet, gripping her sword in anger, her blade pointing outward. She looked Aren right in the eye.

"I’ll make sure I paint the ground with your blood," she roared in anger.

"Should I take her out?" Athena asked, her tone suggesting she was pissed at the lady.

Aren smiled and then patted Athena on the head. "Nah, don’t bother, she isn’t worth your time," he said casually.

The moment the lady heard that, it was as though a fuse had gone off in her head. She looked at Aren with so much hate.

"My lady, should we help?" one of the men tried to ask.

"Stay the fuck back," she yelled, saliva spilling from her mouth.

A sudden purple aura erupted from her body. The ground beneath her cracked. The aura exploded with even more force.

"I’ll take down this fool myself, or I am not the first daughter of the Blade family."
