Chapter 29: A Mini Holiday

The Grand Hall was packed.

Every seat was filled. Students from all four houses sat in their designated sections, the usual house rivalries temporarily suspended by curiosity and concern. The air buzzed with whispered speculation about why they’d been called here.

Altair and Finn sat together in the Daeryion section, near the middle rows. Finn had been discharged from the infirmary at the eve of the previous day and looked mostly recovered, though he still moved a bit carefully.

Across the hall, in the Halo section, Ryka and Svenja sat side by side. Ryka looked tense, she drummed her fingers against her knee in a nervous rhythm. Svenja, as always, sat perfectly still, her expression blank.

The lights dimmed.

Principal Baldwin stepped onto the stage.

And the room fell silent immediately.

Baldwin stood at the podium and surveyed the crowd for a long moment before speaking.

"Good morning, students of Gran-Lusia Academy."

His voice, amplified by subtle magic, was audible enough across the entire hall.

"I trust you are all well, I will go straight to the reason for this assembly: You have been summoned here because of events that occurred two days ago during the reverse summoning exercise."

A ripple of murmurs spread through the crowd. Baldwin raised one hand, and the hall went silent.

"Several students were temporarily displaced from our controlled summoning plane. An event that should not have been possible. Our countless security measures have been put into question." 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

The murmurs grew louder. You could feel the energy shifting—it was a mix of genuine concern, straight-up fear, and confusion.

"Specific details are unnecessary at this time," Baldwin continued. "But I will say this: the safety of our students is our highest priority. And these events have made it clear that our current security infrastructure requires immediate reevaluation and reinforcement."

He paused, letting the weight of his words settle.

"As such, effective immediately, I am issuing a temporary suspension of all academic activities."

The hall erupted.

Shocked gasps, shouts, and even a few cheers from the students treating it like an unplanned spring break. Meanwhile, others looked genuinely worried as their faces paled.

Baldwin raised his hand again, and the noise gradually subsided.

"The suspension has no specific end date," he said. "But we expect it to be brief. During this time, students may choose to return home or remain on Academy grounds. Those who stay will be subject to a strict curfew from dusk to dawn. No exceptions."

He scanned the crowd one final time.

"We will do everything in our power to ensure your safety. That is my promise to you."

With that, he stepped back from the podium.

"This meeting is concluded. You are dismissed."

The hall erupted again, this time in a full wave of noise. Some students were celebrating, already planning their impromptu vacations. Others looked genuinely shaken, whispering anxiously to their neighbors. A few just sat there, confused and trying to process what they’d just heard.

Altair remained seated, watching the chaos unfold around him.

Finn leaned over. "So... mini holiday?"

"Something like that," Altair muttered.

Students began streaming toward the exits, the crowd pressing together in a chaotic flow. Altair pulled out his phone and sent a quick message to Svenja and Ryka.

"Let’s meet under the outdoor reception to the left of the hall."

He observed for when the crowd lessened, pocketed the phone and stood. "Come on Finn."

Finn followed him out.

The reception was a covered lounge area with stone benches set in a semi-circle under a wide awning. A few students passed by, but most were too busy rushing off to pack or make travel plans to pay attention.

Altair and Finn arrived first.

They stood near one of the benches, Finn leaning against the stone railing while Altair checked his phone.

A minute later, Ryka appeared, walking quickly toward them. She spotted Finn immediately, and her expression brightened.

"Hey Finn" she called as he approached.

Finn turned. "Hey... Ryka."

She reached them and immediately expressed her concern. "I’m so glad you’re out, uhm, how are you feeling?."

"I’m recovering," Finn said. "But yeah, I’m good."

Ryka exhaled with relief. Then her expression shifted, becoming more sorry.

"I wanted to apologize," she said quietly. "For what happened during the trial. My wyvern... I lost control and you got hurt because of me."

Finn waved her off immediately. "Don’t worry about it. That trial was chaos from the start, I know you didn’t mean for it to happen."

"Still," Ryka insisted. "I’m sorry. And I’m really glad you’re okay."

A soft, genuine smile sprouted on Finn’s face. "Thanks, Ryka, I appreciate it."

Altair watched the exchange with quiet satisfaction. He’d been worried the trial might have created lasting tension between them. But seeing them talk like this, easy and sincere, he couldn’t feel more relieved.

They didn’t turn into enemies.

And just then...

"Here."

All three of them jumped.

They turned to see Svenja standing beside them. Still as a statue, like she’d been there the whole time.

"Phew," Finn exhaled, putting a hand over his chest.

"You have to stop doing that, Svenja." Altair said

"Sorry."

The word was delivered in her usual monotonous tone, but it still landed like a small bomb.

Everyone stared.

Svenja had just apologized.

Granted, it was expected in this situation. But no one had actually thought Svenja would say the word "sorry." Maybe she was starting to lighten up.

Her expression, however, remained completely unchanged. Blank as ever.

Altair recovered first. "Okay. Since we’re all here..."

He glanced around to make sure no one was listening, then lowered his voice slightly.

"I want to let you all know that I’ve begun an investigation on Master Oz. I’m going to find out if he’s the culprit, or if he isn’t."

"How?" Ryka asked.

"I have eyes on him," Altair said simply. "But first I want to know... are any of you taking the break for a holiday?"

They all paused, considering the question.

Ryka spoke first. "No. We were all affected by this. It wasn’t just you who got abducted, Altair. We were taken too. And if the Herald got your ID, he’s got ours as well."

She looked at each of them in turn with a firm expression written all over her face.

"We’re in this together."

A smile broke across Altair’s face. He turned to Svenja. "You?"

Svenja turned her head left, then right.

No.

She was a person of few words and even less emotion. But for some reason, she was getting loyal to Altair.

He turned to Finn last. "I wouldn’t ask anything from you other than that you recover properly."

"Right," Finn said, crossing his arms. "But I already missed a lot. I’m not sitting this one out too, roomie."

"Ick."

The word "roomie" felt weird coming out of Finn’s mouth, but Altair quickly brushed it off.

Thinking about all he had acheived, a feeling of wholesomeness washed over him.

He wasn’t just living.

He was creating alliances.

Real ones.

"Alright then," Altair said. "I’ll keep you all posted."

Ryka nodded. Svenja gave a tiny, almost invisible nod back while Finn just flashed a smile.

They hung out for a second longe, a quiet understanding passing between them.

Then, one by one, they all dispersed.

Finn headed back toward the dorms, still recovering but determined not to fall behind. Ryka walked toward the library, probably planning to research something. Svenja walked for a moment, then simply vanished into the crowd silently as always.

Altair stayed behind for a moment, watching them go.

The investigation had begun.

Glad that whatever came next, he wouldn’t be facing it alone.
