Chapter 16 - Issei's Deadly Date

Leaning against the wall, Shinji was watching a café across the street.

He was lucky because the moment he left the shopping mall, he spotted Issei walking alongside a girl with long, jet-black hair who appeared to be the same age as him.

If he had to describe the scene before his eyes, he could only use one phrase: "A manga date."

They chatted, joked, and flirted, all while holding hands.

To any bystander, it was no different from a date between two lovers.

However, the girl in question was not normal. Shinji knew that she belonged to the supernatural world. Amano Yuuma, whose real name was Reynare, was a fallen angel. Using [Evaluation], he checked her status.

[Name: Reynare]

[Race: Fallen Angel (2 wings)]

[Occupation: None]

[Level: 150]

● [Magic: 3,000]

● [Attack: 3,000]

● [Constitution: 3,700]

● [Agility: 3,200]

● [Intelligence: 2,500]

● [Luck: 1,700]

● [Weakness: Heart, wings]

Shinji was surprised. In fact, Reynare was incredibly weak! With his current power, he could take her down with a single slap.

To a normal human, her power might be a threat. With those stats, Reynare could easily take down an [Elite Goblin]. However, against monsters like the [Blood Orc] or the [Hell Slime], things would be more difficult. And against the [Goblin General], Shinji was sure she wouldn't stand a chance.

Letting out a sigh, he felt confident. Still, he chose not to act arrogantly. Even the weakest ant can cause harm. Keeping that in mind, he resumed watching the couple.

Using his [Universal Sense] ability, he could perceive the magical power surrounding them. It formed some kind of barrier that helped them attract less attention.

Silently, Shinji followed them. With his [Stealth] ability, he managed to conceal his presence.

He also remained alert. He remembered that Rias had familiars watching over Issei's situation. He didn't want to draw too much attention to himself.

At this point, Motohama began to wonder if he should prevent Issei from dying at Reynare's hands. After all, according to the story's plot, Issei's death would leave him with a kind of trauma that would later prevent him from accepting the feelings of the women around him.

While that reasoning made some sense, it was also pretty stupid, considering Issei's personality and behavior.

Even so, Issei was his friend in this world, and the two of them had been through many peculiar situations, to put it mildly. He didn't want to see him suffer if he could avoid it.

But wouldn't that be counterproductive for Issei?

One could say that dying was the price Issei had to pay to fulfill his dream of having a harem, finding love, and becoming extremely powerful—despite being an incorrigible pervert.

Of course, all of it was just part of Rias' plan to turn Issei into someone obedient, dependent, and loyal. Though, in the end, the plan failed miserably.

So, should he prevent his death or not?

Looking at the smile on Issei's face, Shinji came to a conclusion.

Sooner or later, Issei would enter the supernatural world. If he didn't develop the right mindset for it, he would die an early death.

Suppressing his bubbling emotions, Shinji continued watching the scene.

At that moment, the sky was gradually darkening, and the sun was about to set.

Shinji noticed that Reynare had deployed a barrier to keep unwanted intruders away.

Suddenly, Yuuma let go of Issei's hand. Taking a few quick steps, she stopped in front of a fountain before turning to Issei with a smile.

They had stopped in a nearby park. Taking advantage of the tranquility and the obvious lack of people around, she made her move.

"Issei-kun, as a memento of our first date, can I ask you for something?"

She asked with a flirtatious smile and a charming tone. She leaned forward slightly, showing some cleavage while keeping her hands behind her back.

"Hmm... What is it, Yuuma-chan? If I have it, I'll give it to you."

Issei smiled like a lovestruck boy. However, his eyes were glued to Yuuma's chest.

Reynare mocked Issei in her mind. While she had enjoyed being treated well, the way Issei was devouring her with that perverted gaze made her uncomfortable. She wanted to get this over with quickly.

"Then, Issei-kun... would you die for me?"

She asked, her smile twisting into a more sinister one.

"Huh?... Sorry, can you say that again? I think there's something wrong with my ears."

Issei seemed genuinely confused by Yuuma's strange request.

"Would you die for me?"

She repeated with the same expression.

Yuuma took a few steps back before her body began to emit an intense light. Her features shifted from youthful to sharp and cunning. A pair of black wings grew from her back. Her outfit was replaced by a revealing black ensemble that exposed much of her skin, making her look like an S&M porn actress.

Thus, Reynare revealed her identity as a fallen angel.

Shinji admitted that the sight was both fascinating and extravagant.

Issei's expression twisted in horror as he stumbled backward.

Seeing this, Reynare's cruel smile widened.

"What's wrong, Issei-kun? Are you... scared?"

"Yuuma-chan, you..."

Before Issei could finish speaking, Reynare raised her hand, and a bright, crackling orb formed in her palm. It quickly changed shape into a spear of lightning, its shaft crackling with energy.

Watching Amano Yuuma transform into a black-winged being while wielding a spear of power left Issei completely in shock.

"I'm sorry, Issei-kun. But... die for me."

Uttering those cold words, Reynare hurled her spear at Issei's abdomen.

The sound of the wind being sliced echoed through the air. However, Issei's figure had vanished from the spot.

At this, Reynare frowned. Looking around, she spotted Issei a few meters away.

Standing in front of him was a boy with dark brown hair, watching her with a cold gaze. There was even a hint of disgust in his eyes.

For a few seconds, the fallen angel, Reynare, felt intimidated by the boy's stare.

Who was he? Why was he here?

Countless questions swirled in her mind at that moment. However, she quickly snapped back to reality.

"Disgusting human, who the hell are you? How dare you interfere with my plans?"

She shouted, conjuring more spears around her.

"It doesn't matter. Just—die!"

The spears shot toward them at high speed.

Shinji watched the spears. They were moving at a decent speed, but he could still see them and predict their trajectory. They were nowhere near the level of the Goblin General's attacks, whom he had faced before.

Holding a confused and dazed Issei in his arms, Shinji vanished from the spot, reappearing farther away.

After setting Issei down on the ground, he murmured a few words before disappearing again.

"I know you're confused. For now, hide somewhere safe. However, watch what happens. Don't look away, no matter what."

Issei stared in shock as his battle-hardened friend vanished from his spot, only to reappear a few meters away from the black-winged angel, who bombarded him with glowing spears. Watching him disappear and reappear while dodging the attacks—it was something unreal to his eyes.

On the other hand, Reynare was frustrated. No matter how much she attacked, the human who had appeared out of nowhere effortlessly evaded her strikes.

The moment he had shown up, she realized that he possessed magical power far superior to her own. Her instincts screamed at her to flee if she wanted to stay alive. Though she was arrogant, she wasn't stupid.

Throwing several spears as a distraction, she attempted to escape, flapping her wings.

Shinji noticed this but remained in place, watching her flee. He had no resentment toward Reynare; he had prevented Issei from suffering, and that was enough.

As Reynare disappeared from sight, Shinji turned to a very confused Issei. With a single step, he appeared in front of him.

"Motohama? This...? ..."

Issei had countless questions at that moment, but Shinji silenced him.

"I know you must have a lot of questions right now. However, I'm not the one who should answer them."

Shinji approached Issei and searched his pockets, finding a piece of paper with a drawn magic circle. He quickly tore it while speaking.

"How long do you plan to keep watching? Show yourself already."

In the end, he didn't have the heart to watch his friend suffer. That's why he thought of another way for Issei to fulfill his destiny.

Issei looked at Shinji, not understanding who he was talking to. Glancing around, he saw that they were alone.

The park remained silent for a few seconds before a brilliant red circle appeared near the two boys.
