Chapter 50: Another mistake

"What did she say?" Ethan asked as he saw Clara walking toward him alone.

Clara sighed. "She said she’ll join in a bit."

Ethan clicked his tongue. "Why can’t she be obedient to her duty?"

Hannah tried to calm him down. "The meeting begins in an hour. I’m sure she’ll be there on time."

Ethan shook his head. "No. You two go ahead. I’ll bring her with me."

Clara’s heart sank. "Why are you worried about her? She isn’t a child."

"Yes, but she definitely is a fool," he replied sternly, silencing Clara.

The pink-haired girl’s fingers curled around her books instinctively as she watched Ethan’s retreating back.

Hannah sighed and rested a hand on her friend’s shoulder. "I think you need to first make him realize that you are a woman..."

....

Ethan had already entered the college building, his gaze sweeping across the sea of students lazily chatting and laughing as they moved about.

He clicked his tongue in annoyance, knowing exactly where she might have gone instead of attending the meeting.

To meet that seaweed.

There were too many places they could meet. And knowing how obsessed Amanda was, he knew that despite Kyle’s reluctance, she would somehow convince him to go along with her.

’I can’t let her get back with that guy...’

He took out his phone and opened the tracking app.

As their team leader, he had a safety measure in place in case his teammates ever got stuck in a difficult situation and couldn’t reach him.

He wasn’t supposed to track them unless it was an emergency, but Ethan didn’t care about the rules. He needed to remind that foolish girl where she belonged.

The tracker showed that she was still in the main building, near the locker section.

He went to the first floor and checked the area. She was nowhere in sight.

Then the second floor. The result was the same.

Then it hit him. The third floor was usually empty, so they must have gone there to meet.

He pocketed his phone and raced toward the third floor, unconsciously using Genesis to enhance his speed.

As he reached the floor, he was met with silence. Yet faintly, he could hear a male voice whispering low enough to be almost indistinct, but still enough for Ethan to realize someone was hiding there.

Narrowing his eyes, he clenched his fist, ready to beat that seaweed first and make up an excuse later about suspecting a thief.

However, his steps suddenly came to a halt. His heart began to race, and his mind went blank.

Several waves of Genesis flooded the gallery, rendering him motionless, his eyes unfocused.

Then, a blinding light burst out of nowhere, forcing Ethan to cover his eyes.

"Gah..." he groaned, squeezing them shut.

This much Genesis...wasn’t Amanda supposed to be the only Nightwalker around? Was she releasing this much energy?

Questions after questions popped in his head but by the time clarity returned to him, no one was around.

Ethan clenched his fist in rage.

’Let’s see how far you can run from me, Amanda.’

....

Kyle exhaled a long sigh as he sprinted out of the building through the back route.

He didn’t want to leave Amanda like that, but he had no choice. If Ethan had seen them together, things would have become complicated.

Yes, once this trip was over and he had explained everything to Amanda, he wouldn’t hesitate to reveal to everyone that he was back with her. But until then, he would rather keep things under wraps.

’Now, there are two people who know my secret.’ First Veronica, and now Amanda.

Shaking his head, he took out his phone and called Veronica.

He would have hung up if she hadn’t picked up instantly, considering she should have been at work. But instead,

{You really are testing the PSC surveillance here.}

Kyle froze, his steps coming to a sudden halt as he said, "Wait... the cameras in the uni... ah, fuck." He slammed his hand against his forehead.

{The government has always been paranoid about the Aether world, and they value their Nightwalkers above all else. Naturally, they keep a close watch on an institute where several aspiring Nightwalkers study.}

Kyle groaned. "How much did the cameras catch?"

{Thankfully, you weren’t on the footage. However, Amanda was. And it was reported that she was quite close to the location of that absurd Genesis burst... you might have put her in danger, Kyle.}

Kyle chewed on his lower lip. "But Ethan was chasing us."

{Yeah, you could have made up a lie... but instead, you used a tool that would instantly link you to that rogue one.}

Kyle squeezed his eyes shut. Another mistake, damn it.

He had been trying so hard to keep his other identity hidden, yet he kept making mistakes that could expose him.

Yes, he had a safety net in Veronica, who could inform him of everything gathered by headquarters, but even she had limits to what she could conceal.

After what he did yesterday, destroying an entire building, he had already come under close scrutiny from the PSC.

{Alright, don’t make that face. I’ll handle it.}

Kyle blinked in surprise. "You can?"

{Yes. I just need Amanda to stay silent, and I’ll divert their attention elsewhere. Don’t worry about it. Just don’t meet Amanda in secrecy like this again. Ethan has become a lunatic these days, always chasing her. So be careful.}

Kyle crossed his arms over his chest, hooking his fingers into his other folded arm before asking, "Are you sure? Won’t you get into trouble?"

There was a brief pause on the other end before Veronica replied,

{This position I’ve attained... the influence I hold... it would mean nothing if I couldn’t be useful to you in situations like this.}

Kyle was left speechless by those words.

His curiosity about what made her so attached to him deepened, along with the warm swell of gratitude rising in his chest.

But before he could say anything, she spoke her final words and disconnected the call,

{Don’t worry, Kyle. I’ve always got your back.}
