The woman beside the young man asked, “Didn’t you fight back?”

“We did, but it’s useless.”

Old Guan said dejectedly, “The yin riders aren’t just incredibly powerful. They are unkillable as well. My caravan was guarded by two Truemen, but they were taken out in a single exchange.”

“Realizing that defeating them is impossible, everyone scattered in an attempt to escape. It was useless though. The yin riders moved like the wind and were faster than all of us. There was simply no way we could outrun them.”

“We could neither beat them nor run away, so we could only wait for death to claim us. There was absolutely nothing else we could do.”

The young man rubbed his nose. “They’re that scary, huh?”

“Yes, they’re beyond terrifying.”

Old Guan shakily took a drag from his pipe and continued in a dark voice, “Thank goodness there is only the blood sun and the yin riders this time. Thank goodness the flood dragon didn’t roar. Otherwise, every single one of us is going to die here.”

“Thank goodness... thank goodness...”

“Unfortunately, I think you relaxed too soon, Uncle Guan.”

“What do you mean, Miss Feng?” Old Guan suddenly felt a sense of unease.

“Look.” The young woman pointed at the bloody sun in the sky.

Old Guan looked up and noticed that the bloody sun was growing darker and redder by the second. In fact, its light had become so thick that it rippled like water.

“Something’s not right. Why is the blood sun growing redder instead of thinner?”

At this point, Old Guan realized that something was odd as well. “This isn’t right. The blood sun should gradually return to normal after the yin riders are gone. It should not be turning redder. How can this be?”

By now, keeper Zhou and the stewards had noticed the oddity as well. They urged the others to hurry so they could leave this place as soon as possible.

Heart hammering inside his chest, Old Guan called out to the young man and the young woman one time before rushing to help his fellow merchants. It was clear he did not want to linger even a second longer.

At the top of a snow peak a couple kilometers away from the Golden Road, a middle-aged man wearing a set of silver robes said to the woman next to him in a sarcastic voice.

“My apologies for not living up to your expectations,” the woman replied uncaringly. She was in her thirties and looked to be quite beautiful. Her skin looked as pale as snow, and she was wearing a crimson dress that was as red as blood. The contrast made her look both lofty and charming like a lone winter plum that grew unhindered by a snowstorm.

The woman also had a beautiful name: Xuemei (Snow Plum). Her full name was Tang Xuemei.

Few people knew about her real name though. They usually knew her by her moniker, Blood Plum. The moniker was particularly well known by those who frequented the Golden Road.

Actually, that was an understatement. There was no one who didn’t know about her.

After all, Blood Plum was one of the Five Evils.

Old Guan mentioned earlier that the Golden Road boasted twelve taboos. They were the Three Anomalies, Four Villains, and Five Evils.

The Three Anomalies were the Headless Buddha, the Valley of Sorrow, and the Blood Sun Yin Riders.

The Four Villains referred to four Strangers that haunted the Golden Road. They were the Snow Grandmother, the Four Directions Ghost Temple, the Wind Beckoning Sky Centipede, and the Yu Jin Demonic Tree.

The Snow Grandmother was constantly accompanied by a snowstorm that froze everything in her wake.

The Four Directions Ghost Temple was an anomalous temple that could walk. It roamed everywhere on the Golden Road and carried many evil, carnivorous ghosts in its belly.

The Wind Beckoning Sky Centipede was a gigantic centipede about three hundred meters long. It was constantly accompanied by a windstorm that enveloped a large area.

The Yu Jin Demonic Tree was a gigantic, one-thousand-meter tall tree that was covered in beautiful Yu Jin Flower. The flower bloomed for all seasons and was as fragrant as it was pretty. However, anyone who caught a whiff of its scent would be lured to the Yu Jin Demonic Tree and turned into its fertilizer.

The Five Evils referred to five notorious bandits who committed every crime under the sun such as robbery, murder, arson and more. They were Fat Tiger, Thin Dragon, White Snake, Thousand Hand and Blood Plum respectively.

Yes, Blood Plum was one of the Five Evils. In fact, Blood Plum was the strongest, scariest, and most brutal of them all. Wherever she went, the blood ran like a river, and white snow was dyed red. She never left a survivor if she could help it. “An endless line of resentful souls trailed behind the Blood Plum”. The quote was specifically referring to her.

This was why everyone who frequented the Golden Road had heard of the name Blood Plum.

Her notoriety was off the charts to put it mildly.

The middle-aged man standing next to Blood Plum wasn’t afraid of her in the slightest though. In fact, he didn’t even give her any face. “Did you think I was praising you, Blood Plum?”

“The consort’s order is for you to kill them, not scare them! If this is all you got, then I would have no choice but to take action myself!”

“Sure. Do as you please,” Blood Plum replied playfully. She did not seem concerned about his threat in the slightest.

“You—”

Frustrated, the man yelled, “Do not forget who you are, Blood Plum. The consort will punish you if you cannot fulfill your given task!”

Blood Plum dug her ear with a finger while replying in a scornful voice, “You’re so noisy. Like I said, do it yourself if you can!”

Her defiance only angered the man more, and his aura stirred violently around him. “Are you disobeying the consort’s orders, Blood Plum? Have you forgotten that you are just a dog of the Pingsun King Office?”

“Dog?”

Blood Plum abruptly turned around and made a grab for the middle-aged man.

The man’s hair stood on end when he saw the incoming palm, but he could neither block nor dodge it. He could only watch as Blood Plum’s pale, slender hand seized him by the throat and sealed off both his force and his mind. Then, he was lifted into the air.

Blood Plum was smaller and thinner than the middle-aged man in every way, and yet she felt as intimidating as a god or a demon right now. As she tightened her grip, the middle-aged man’s neck bones cracked ominously, his face turned red in an instant, and his eyes bulged like they would pop out of his eye sockets.

“Do not use your master to threaten me. I may be a dog, but I am His Highness’ dog, not the consort, and definitely not you. You have no right to tell me what to do because you are even lesser than a dog.”

Blood Plum uttered icily and murderously, “Also, you’re the coward who doesn’t dare to attack those two because you couldn’t figure out their depths, so cease your barking, or die.”

“Do you understand?”

“Hrrr... hrrr...”

The middle-aged man’s eyes grew bloodshot, and indiscernible wheezes escaped his throat. He could not say a single word thought.

“What’s wrong? Are you mute?”

Blood Plum’s eyes flashed mirthfully. “Oh, my apologies. I forgot you can’t speak like this.”

Blood Plum released her grip, and the man collapsed to the ground and immediately started coughing violently. “Cough! Cough... Blood Plum... You...!”

“I see you do not yet understand your place!” Blood Plum’s voice turned colder.

“Urk!” The middle-aged man startled and recalled the fear of death that gripped him just a second ago. Despite his indignance, he forced himself to stop talking.
