Chapter 401: Who We Really Are

"But..." I mumbled, but I could not bring myself to say anything else when my eyes met his. His beautiful lips curved into a teasing smile, and there was a certain sparkle in the depths of his eyes that captivated my attention. That was when I knew that although he probably disapproved of what I had just done, there was a part of him that was actually quite pleased. I found myself smiling sweetly back at him like I was some fool.

"You hit me? You vile bitch! I’m your father. I raised you!" my father screamed at me at the top of his lungs. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who had forgotten where we were and the fact that we were surrounded by other high-profile guests who were attending the party.

"Dahlia, how could you do something like that? How could you hurt your father? We never raised you to become like this," my mother said, with clear disappointment and shock on her facial features.

"Really? Because here I honestly thought that I was already disowned. Well, to be more accurate, I decided to cut myself off to get away from both of you and our rotten family," I replied, with my voice filled with venom.

"I guess that’s very well said," my sister jumped into our argument with a praise of her own.

Instead of speaking to me directly, Diana had made that comment to one of the guests that she was standing close to. That was when I realized that a pretty large crowd had gathered around us, to undoubtedly witness the dramatic spectacle that was unfolding in one of the kingdom’s most prestigious noble families-if it could still be said that we were noble.

"Get your sister out of here right now. We will deal with her later," my mother ordered Diana, as she became increasingly aware that the situation was getting out of control.

My father still hadn’t regained his head, and his face was still extremeely red with anger as his breath came out in huffs and puffs. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚

"I can’t do that. It’s clear that she doesn’t want to do what you want her to, and she also doesn’t want to leave that sweet husband of hers," Diana quickly objected before giggling sweetly, as if everything was simply a joke.

"You are my daughter, and you will do exactly as you’re told! Come back home immediately. Your sham of a marriage is over!" my father yelled as he pointed his index finger repeatedly at me, as if it would help him get his point across.

"I’m not your daughter. I haven’t been your daughter for a very long time. Who do you think you are? What makes you think that you can cast me aside and then call me back when it’s convenient for you?" I said before letting out a scoff while shaking my head from side to side.

I was nothing more than a pawn that my parents thought they could use and abuse however they wished. When I was an inconvenience for them, they got rid of me without even listening to what I had to say. Then, when they needed me, I was their daughter again. It was just all too convenient for them, and that left an extremely bitter taste in my mouth.

"You ungrateful bitch! How dare you talk to your father that way? Come back home right now before I get the guards to drag you back!" my father yelled even louder than before.

"Too bad for you, but I’m the only daughter that you have left now. Although I guess I didn’t turn out the way that you wanted me to either," Diana said before laughing boldly.

"Stop this nonsense right now. Everyone is watching us-we should just go home," my mother hissed as she pulled on my father’s arm. It seemed like my mother was the only one who had some parts of her brain functioning in that situation. The dysfunction of our family was clearly a joy to witness for the party guests. For a while, I felt like I was a monkey performing in a circus, and I was just waiting for everyone that had surrounded us to clap their hands in applause and throw us some tips.

"Mother’s right. We should take all this dramatic stuff back home and leave Dahlia alone," Diana readily agreed.

"No! She is coming with us. The Vulkan family dare to abandon us-I will never have my daughter associating herself with one of them," my father continued with his twisted line of logic.

"Then there is nothing left for you to accomplish here. Dahlia is not your daughter anymore, and neither am I one of the Vulkans. I will never let you take my wife. You better leave, while you’re still alive and able to walk," Bradon suddenly spoke up slowly and clearly. The coldness of his tone served as a warning and also a very direct threat. Although he appeared calm, I could tell that Bradon was on the verge of losing it. He must have suppressed his emotions while he listened to the drama of my family until he could no longer take it.

"Guards! Please escort members of the Alnault family outside. I am very sorry, everyone, for this unprecedented disturbance. The main event is about to start, so I urge all of you to head further inside the venue," a very polite woman addressed the crowd.

I had no idea who she was, but she seemed to be in charge, at least of organizing and running the event. The guards also obeyed her words very well as they escorted the three members of the Alnault family out of the venue. As if my father had lost all touches of being a gentleman, I could still hear him shouting and cursing even when he was no longer in my line of sight.

"Shall we also head home?" Bradon suggested.

"That’s the best idea ever," I replied, without missing a heartbeat.
