Substitute Wife for the Mafia King R18-Chapter 420: That Day
During our time away, his parents must have filled him in on what happened while he was still locked up in his deep and long slumber.
"Don’t worry about it. I’ll always have your back," Bradon replied without missing a beat.
"And I promise that I’ll always have yours," Anthony replied before he beamed a smile at his brother. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
I could feel the love between the two brothers, and it brought a smile to my lips to think that the love that they shared closely resembled the bond that I shared with my sister. It suddenly felt like I didn’t belong in the room, but just as I was wondering if I should leave to give the two of them some private time and space to catch up, Anthony turned and focused his eyes on my face.
"I heard that you married Diana in my place..." Anthony said to Bradon, although his eyes were still glued to my face.
"I did. It had to be done," Bradon replied matter-of-factly.
"But it seemed like Diana chickened out and ran away before the wedding, so Dahlia ended up taking her sister’s place instead..." Anthony said as his brows furrowed, as if he was still struggling to piece things together.
"I know that it’s a little complicated," I quickly jumped in.
Diana didn’t actually chicken out, but she ran off with her lover. I pressed my lips into a thin line while reminding myself that correcting Anthony with that fact wasn’t going to add any real value to our conversation.
"You’re right. It is complicated. So right now, who is married to who, if at all?" Anthony asked.
Honestly, I didn’t know how to respond to his question, and it seemed like Bradon was at a loss for words as well. The way Anthony asked his question made it sound like he was daring us to answer, while at the same time, it felt like whatever answer that we could offer would simply be wrong no matter what.
"Well..." I mumbled as I felt hesitation take over me.
I looked towards Bradon as I begged him with my eyes for him to step in to say something. I wasn’t sure what was the right thing to tell Anthony or even what was the truth about the status of my marriage to Bradon. I wasn’t even sure if we were truly married or if it could count as us being married because we both took our sibling’s place at the wedding. On paper, it was Anthony that was married to Diana, and that was also the case in the formal sense.
In addition, thinking of it from the public’s and everyone’s perspectives, the ones that had gotten married were my sister and Anthony. However, even that marriage seemed to have been voided now that our families were no longer in a partnership. To my utter frustration, Bradon did not seem eager to offer me any help.
"Let’s not talk about something so complicated and confusing for now. You just woke up, so you should just focus on your recovery. For now, nothing should take priority over that," I told Anthony before offering him an encouraging smile.
"How’s your memory? Can you remember everything that happened before the accident?" Bradon asked.
"At first, it was a little blurry, but it all came back to me quite fast..." Anthony said before he appeared to have a very conflicted look on his face.
"What’s the matter? Does it hurt somewhere?" I asked with concern.
"No. It’s just, I hadn’t realized just how much time had passed. When I woke up, I thought it was still that day..."
Anthony explained before taking a pause.
"You mean, the day of the accident?" Bradon asked.
"That day..." I mumbled.
Now that I thought about it, I knew very little about what actually happened on that day. All Bradon managed to tell me was that Anthony was going somewhere and he was speeding. His reckless driving behavior, which wasn’t at all like him, ultimately led to the unfortunate accident. Apart from that, I knew nothing else about the events that transpired on that day. I wanted to ask Anthony what happened on that day, but I was also scared that I may be triggering traumatic memories for Anthony.
"That day..." Anthony said before he turned to look straight into my eyes.
My heart began beating faster when I sensed that we were about to learn something important about what happened that day. A shiver ran through my body as my instincts told me that perhaps Bradon was not entirely wrong. Perhaps, I really had something to do with Anthony’s accident; at least, the way that he was staring at me made me believe so.
"What happened? Where were you headed to? Why were you in such a hurry?" Bradon fired off multiple questions in succession.
"I was going to see Dahlia," Anthony replied as he kept his eyes on my face.
"To see me?" I asked before I could stop myself.
I was simply too surprised to control my reaction. It didn’t make any sense that Anthony was heading to see me.
"I found out that you were coming back on that day and that you’d be landing at the airport. Of course, my mother wanted to keep it from me, but I found out about it anyway. I wanted to be there to welcome you back and pick you up at the airport..." Anthony explained before he smiled gently my way.
I was speechless, and the silence that enveloped the room told me that Bradon was just as stunned as I was. It never occurred to me that Anthony got into the accident on the same day that I arrived back in the country. It felt even more unbelievable that he was planning to pick me up from the airport.
"But why?" I asked after recovering somewhat from my initial shock.
"I wanted to be there to welcome you back. I was so happy to hear that you were coming back. I even got you flowers, but it took longer than I thought, so I had to drive faster to make sure that I got there in time," Anthony explained.
