Summoned to a Fantasy World With a Modern Military System-Chapter 73: Not Human Anymore
The monster which Randolf had turned into let out a loud scream.
Or well, it was not a loud to be fair. It was rather a high-pitched shriek, like a low and guttural groan. The sound itself was almost quiet.
However it sent intense vibrations through the ground. Allen felt the vibration in his teeth and it rattled his bones, and it wasn't just him but the whole camp seemed to shake with the vibrations that one could almost feel within their bodies.
The monster's slimy and brown tentacles writhed in the air as they whipped back and forth like wild snakes and they lashed out, smashing into the ground and sending up dust and pieces of stones.
The soldiers fighting Luna stopped dead in their places upon hearing the scream and looking at this demon spawn that had just appeared before them.
Their panicked charge ended and they stared at the new monster while the golden fire from the burning tent lit up the horrifying scene.
It was a nightmare given form. Luna turned, her sword still ready as her eyes landed on what Randolf had become. The blood drained from her face as soon as she realized what had happened.
She was no stranger to this, she had dealt with these things before.
Soon her gaze fell on Allen who was standing just a few feet away from the monster, also dazed by the sudden change of events.
A raw and terrified scream ripped from her lungs when she saw him near it. It was a sound Allen had never heard her make.
"Allen!" she shrieked. "Get away from him! Get as far away as you can!"
But it was useless. It was too late.
The monster turned and its ruined and swollen head swiveled slowly toward Allen. It had no eyes and just bulging white orbs but it knew where he was.
Yellow pus and dark blood dripped from its open body with the liquids being splattered onto the ground with every movement it made.
Its two long tentacles snapped forward. They didn't move like muscle but were more like whips, and they were faster than anything Allen could react to.
They cut through the air in a single arc that was headed toward Allen. They were like a black blur against the golden firelight and were aimed right at his chest.
The tentacles attack carried enough force behind it that a direct hit was for sure going to instantly shatter his rib cage.
And they were moving at a much faster pace than anything Allen could react to. He was aware of this as well.
Seeing that Luna bit her lip so hard she tasted the coppery tang of her own blood before she vanished from her place.
A flash of silver light sparked through the area before she appeared right in front of Allen. Without wasting a single second she used both hands and put her sword forward to block the hit, holding it from both ends.
She made it just in time, right at the last second.
The tentacles slammed into the flat of her sword. The resulting sound was a dull and heavy and sickening THUD. The force was unimaginable and it felt like being hit by a speeding cart.
Luna's arms screamed in pain as she continued holding the sword held, but the impact didn't stop.
Before Allen could even register what had happened he felt the force which hit him through Luna. He was flung backward off his feet and he flew through the air, tangled up with Luna like ragdolls.
They crashed hard through the wall of a nearby canvas tent, the clothes being ripped rapidly and the wooden support poles snapping like twigs.
But that wasn't enough to make them stop. They tumbled through the first tent and rolled across the dark space inside before they smashed right through the back of it, crashing into a second tent and then a third.
They finally skidded to a halt when they were in a dark, tangled pile of torn canvas and broken wood.
A bright and red notification flashed in Allen's vision.
[WARNING: HP DOWN TO 80%]
Pain flared up in Allen's back and his chest ached, with all the wind having been knocked out of him. He groaned.
He tried to push a heavy and splintered pole off his legs but the world around him was spinning. He saw Luna lying next to him just a few feet away.
She was in the same pile of wreckage. She coughed in a dry and racking sound as her body convulsed. Then she pushed herself up onto her hands and her whole body was shaking.
She saw Allen struggling to hold himself up and hence reached out a hand.
"Come on!" she said, her voice being strained and full of pain.
Allen grabbed her hand and she pulled him hard and he got to his feet.
Shit. This is pretty fucking bad. Allen thought to himself as he leaned against a broken tent pole. His chest was aching with every breath.
I didn't even take a direct hit from that thing but it still flung me into the air like I'm some shitty toy and brought my HP down by 20% in one hit. This is so not gonna work.
A few more hits and I would be dead.
He looked at Luna and saw that she was breathing heavily. Her face was pale in the golden firelight and her silver hair was full of dirt and splinters.
"What the fuck is that thing? How did Randolf turn into that?" he asked, with his gaze at her. "I'm sure I had landed multiple hits on him and he was on the verge of dying."
Luna's face showed hesitation for a second as she looked at the monster in the distance, past the torn canvas.
Then she looked at Allen with her eyes were wide with a fear he hadn't seen before. She hesitated for a second before opening her mouth. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
"That's a half blood," she said.
"A half blood?" Allen repeated, seemingly confused by the vague description. "What is that?"
"It's the result of what happens when a highlander forcefully mixed their blood into the bodies of a normal human. Since they carry much more magical power than normal humans their blood is also much more dense in terms of mana, and when it comes into contact with our bodies it ends up completely wrecking the magic circuits within our bodies," she explained.
"The result usually varies somewhat. Some people die instantly because their bodies are not able to accept the blood of a highlander, while some people end up like this because their bodies try to adapt to the highlander blood and end up like this.
"There's not any evidence for it but it is believed that if you are strong enough as a human then by taking a highlanders blood inside you one can become a highlander even if they were just a normal human before."
Okay that's a lot of stuff I have no fucking clue about. I guess there's still much more I have to learn about this world…if I make it alive out this first that is…
"Uh, so you mean to say that he turned out to be like this because he consumed the blood of a highlander?" Allen asked.
"Yeah, that's basically it. Turning into this monster like thing is the most expected outcome of taking a highlanders blood, so much so that some highlanders use it as a punishment for humans. Once you turn into this there's no going back," Luna said, a bitter expression forming on her face as those words left her mouth.
"So, any ideas on how to defeat it?" Allen questioned.
"Technically these things are about a quarter as powerful as a full fledged highlander, but what makes them so destructive is that they don't possess any intelligence and destroy anything and everything around them.
"You can't reason with them or trick them like you can with a highlander, which makes them a lot harder to deal with," she said. "We'll have to make our moves carefully."
As the two of them stood there hidden in the wreckage, they felt it again. That deep and intense vibration which shook their bodies to their very core.
It rattled the broken poles around them. The bloody monster was letting out another one of that low vibrating screams.
"We can't afford to stay idle for too long, it seems," Luna said, taking a few steps forward her sword in hand.
Allen also stood up despite the pain convulsing through his body. He coughed a little, spitting out some blood before wiping his mouth.
Then he one by one unfastened all the armor he had worn as a disguise. Since there wasn't really any point in hiding now the armor served no purpose and only hindered his mobility.
He stood next to Luna, with both of them looking at the monstrosity that waited ahead of them.
"Well, if we're doing this let's get over this quickly," he said.
"I agree," Luna responded.
Allen's eyes wandered off to the side of his vision, where a translucent screen had been quietly floating for some time now.
