Supreme Summoner Overlord: Rise of the Endless Legion-Chapter 413: Caravan in the Crosshairs (1)
The problem was that he had no idea where civilization was located, since the landscape below offered no clues about his position. The hills could be anywhere in the world because grass and trees weren’t exactly rare identifiers.
Reidar considered his options and decided to use his summons as scouts.
He still had a handful of Vorathid Sky-Hunters active from the battle, and through the Overmind Consciousness perk, he could see through their eyes and direct their movements. The insects were fast, capable of covering large distances quickly, and they had better senses than he did.
"Spread out," Reidar ordered through the mental link. "Find any sign of human activity. Settlements, roads, barriers—anything."
The Sky-Hunters scattered in every direction and began their search. Reidar kept one eye on their views through the Overmind Consciousness while directing his own mount to continue flying in a slow circle.
The wait was tedious.
Reidar used the time to check his other notifications, dismissing the level up messages he’d already seen and reviewing the loot from the Elite Feral Ignis.
The Ignis Elite Core was valuable since it was a crafting material that could be used to create high-tier equipment, and the Blade of the Molten Feral and Feral Ignis Armor Fragment would fetch good prices if he found a vendor or another survivor with the right profession that might be interested in working on it.
An hour passed, and none of the Sky-Hunters had found anything.
Reidar expanded the search area, sending the insects farther out while summoning more to fill the gaps in coverage. The mana cost was negligible compared to his regeneration rate, so he could afford to be thorough.
Another hour passed.
Then one of the Sky-Hunters pinged through Reidar’s mind.
He shifted his attention to that perspective and saw it through the insect’s eyes: a caravan under attack in the distance. Half a dozen wagons formed a defensive circle on a dirt road, surrounded by a swarm of monsters: hulking creatures with chitinous armor and serrated claws.
That had become too much the norm for Reidar’s taste. The problem was that there were around forty survivors, while there were around 200 monsters.
<A caravan. And they’re in trouble.>
He directed his mount toward the location, following the signal the Sky-Hunter was sending him.
The flight took 5 minutes at full speed. As he approached, the scene became clearer: the monsters were Level 350-400 Ravager Beetles.
<They must not be native to Earth. It’s impossible for monsters from here to be at this high level already.>
That was further proved by the fact that the survivors were level 250 at best.
The monsters tore into the wagons’ defenses. Guards fought to hold them back and protect the weaker survivors huddled inside the circle. But it was not easy; quite the contrary, it was almost impossible. Though they were doing this smartly, raising earth barrier after barrier to keep the monsters away and prevent them from swarming them.
It looked like these monsters were also low tier, because otherwise, at the level they were, they should have been able to tear those walls as if they were paper sheets. But they didn’t, though. Reidar didn’t know if it was because they couldn’t or simply didn’t think about it.
As Reidar got closer, he saw bodies scattered on the ground. Both human and monsters. The caravan was losing.
Reidar could see maybe fifteen defenders still standing, while the rest, despite being survivors, weren’t at a high enough level to fight against the monsters and not die 2 seconds after having joined the fight. They barely reached level 180.
<They won’t last much longer at this rate.>
Reidar didn’t hesitate. He summoned more Sky-Hunters as he descended; the insects materialized around him, and then Reidar directed his mount to dive toward the battle.
The guards spotted him immediately.
Reidar could see them pointing at the sky, their faces showing a mix of fear and confusion as giant insects descended toward the battlefield.
Some of them shouted, but their words were lost in the chaos of combat. Some even tried to attack the Vorathid Sky-Hunters, but the attacks simply bounced off. Though at some point, Reidar reached them, and the survivors, seeing the man, got a little less anxious. Though they saw his level.
—[Reidar Miller—Level 557]—
"Get behind the wagons!" Reidar said. "My summons will handle the beetles!"
The guards didn’t need to be told twice.
They fell back toward the wagons as Reidar’s summons surged forward, crashing into the Ravager Beetles with brutal savagery. The battle was as swift as it was vicious since Reidar’s insects vastly outnumbered the beetles, and their higher levels made the outcome inevitable.
Within minutes, the last of the Ravager Beetles fell, and Reidar dismissed the notifications that said he got 0 C.L.A.S.P. points.
He turned toward the caravan. One of the guards, a woman with short brown hair and a bloodied spear, approached. "Thank you. We... we wouldn’t have survived without your help."
"Don’t mention it. I did what everyone else would have done if they were in my position."
The woman looked surprised by Reidar’s words, as if he had said something crazy. After all, who would help a group of strangers that could backstab him at any moment, and do that in the middle of a jungle?
But there was no way they would try that on Reidar, and both he and the woman knew it. He was just too strong.
They chatted a little, talking about their situation. There were a lot of injured people in the group, but unfortunately, they could not even offer them to ride the carts since they were filled, and recovering from these injuries wasn’t really a problem with a healer around. However, their healer died.
"I will take care of this then since you are in this situation," Reidar said. He needed to collect information, so helping these guys was essential.
"By the way, what are you doing in the middle of the jungle?" Reidar asked.
"We were headed to Sweetwater," the woman said. "We’re transporting supplies from Haven’s Rest. About two hundred kilometers west of here."
"Sweetwater?"
The town was near Kingsgate. <Did I land in Kingsgate’s region?> That must have been the case. Of course, the distances stretched, so it was obvious now the town was far from the city, but at least he was closer than he was before entering the portal.
"Yes, Sweetwater. It looks like the Church is in need of materials for whatever they are doing, so we thought that going there would make us earn some Survival points."
<The church?>
Reidar wanted to shout in surprise, but if he did, it would look like he was not informed of the situation, which he could not allow.
"Yeah... How is the situation there?" He asked.
"We don’t know for sure, but it looks like they are trying to find a way to get through the monster field. If they do, they should be able to free Kingsgate."
<What the hell?>
He paused. What Reidar needed now was to get more information about what was going on. What did the woman mean when she said that the church wanted to save Kingsgate? Weren’t they trying to conquer it?
"I’m heading that way too. I’ll escort you for a while to make sure no more beetles show up."
The woman’s expression shifted to relief. "We’d appreciate that. My name’s Kara, by the way. Leader of this caravan’s guard."
