Survive As The Brute's Wife-Chapter 182: Upholding Her Principle
[NO!]
Alexandra shook that thought out of her mind. She cannot lose her freedom no matter what. If the choices her father made for her hurt her to this extent, how much will she lose if she leaves the choice with someone who hates her?
And to be trapped with someone she doesn’t like for an unspecified time will not be good. If, and that is a very big if... If Maximus is allowed to be with her, what kind of life will she lead with their life in front of Calantar? Will Calantar allow happiness in their life when she is very angry at her mother?
So, no. Even if Calantar keeps her end of the bargain and reverses time, she cannot willingly tie herself to Calantar.
"Taking about being free... Calantar, it must have been hard for you to be trapped in a small Orb for a long time," Alexandra spoke, calmly.
She didn’t want to be losing time talking with someone who didn’t keep up their end of the bargain. She wanted to provoke Calantar to respond.
Alexandra decided to fight Calantar. She won her once a long time before, and she can do it again. She suddenly thought of another plan.
Calantar’s face lost all the innocence she was trying to hold at that moment. That was her lowest point—to be trapped for ages in a small vessel, losing her magnificence little by little as time passed.
"How about the Brume Thicket this time?" Alexandra asked, cocking her head. "Or should I make you implode?"
If her beloved is no more, there is no reason for her to hold back. And if there is no way she could get everyone back, she is not going to let Calantar go the way she pleases. Calantar will suffer the same too.
"You nasty little mite dare to threaten me, The Giver of Light?" Calantar raised her voice. Her eyes became round and her eyebrows trembled out of anger. The wind that was blowing gained pace and started to spread darkness even more. The dark clouds above started to rumble and flashes of lightning jumped around in the sky.
"I do. Give my people back, or else..." Alexandra looked at Calantar.
She couldn’t bear the strength of the wind, and the darkness in the air made it hard for her to breathe. She couldn’t use any of the spells as Calantar was in total control.
And that means she cannot open the Brume’s Thicket. And there is only one way left.
"You assimilated everyone with you, didn’t you?" Alexandra asked. "And do you know what I am holding in my hand?" she raised her trusted sword.
Calantar had swallowed every living thing here. And that is why everything disappeared. If Alexandra tries to use her sword to separate Calantar from the souls she acquired, Calantar will implode.
Alexandra was not sure, but she had a feeling that Calantar should not be swallowing souls. Whoever is in charge, whoever showed her that Calantar is necessary for the universe—the true creator—won’t be pleased with Calantar for breaking the rules.
Alexandra hoped the creator is watching and would respond to her. That is if the creator doesn’t want her to kill Calantar.
She cannot go against the creator, but the creator might give her what she wants.
Calantar’s face went pale and then it started to turn to all shades of darkness. Alexandra heard loud wails around. It was the wind gaining intensity. She couldn’t even stand firm in her place as her skirt fluttered in the heavy wind.
"I shall destroy you, filth!"
Calantar’s voice echoed eerily in the bashing wind.
Alexandra placed her feet firmly on the ground and raised her sword to prepare for an attack. There is still one person she can trust and she prepared herself to create a ruckus to garner his attention in case he is not watching.
Unruly children do get attention!
"Come at me, Calantar!" Alexandra smirked seeing Calantar lunging at her. Her entirety was covered with darkness.
And as she watched, a vortex formed in between Calantar’s hands. Alexandra tried to see what was at the other end of the vortex, but there was nothing. It was as if even light gets sucked into that vortex.
The aura around Calantar turned insufferably dense. Alexandra could not breathe at all. She tried to suck in air, but she couldn’t. Her chest felt full and empty at the same time. She looked above at the dark sky. There was no change in the surrounding. There was no help coming. No one was on her side and she was alone. Calantar was still in control.
[So... is this the end? Should I just thrust my sword into her chest?]
Alexandra closed her eyes. Her face started to burn and she saw her fingertips turning blue. She is getting drained of air. Her fingers started to tremble. She did her best to cast even a small spell of transportation to get out of there, but she couldn’t. She tried to manipulate the air around her and failed.
Calantar had swallowed a lot of souls. Although taboo, swallowing souls give immense dark energy. And Calantar is someone who thrives in dark energy. There was no way Alexandra could fight back without any support.
She knew her time is coming to an end. She accepted it. She didn’t know what happens when she dies at the hands of Calantar. But she was not scared to face death.
"You did not keep your word. And such evil must be vanquished!" Alexandra shouted with her last breath. She couldn’t breathe anymore. Her head throbbed with pain, and her ears were stuffed. She couldn’t even cough as there was no air left in her lungs.
Calantar was sucking everything around into her core which was plain darkness.
"You shall die!" Calantar shouted.
Alexandra saw the dark vortex in between Calantar’s hands trying to pull her in. She stuck her sword deep into the ground and supported herself. She didn’t have any energy to stand, but her will to not kneel in front of Calantar gave her energy.
[I am not a destroyer...]
Alexandra told herself. She can be prideful of this. Her past life was a great big mistake. She destroyed many things. But she will not destroy anyone anymore. Not even Calantar.
She was amazed at how much her thoughts are changing in these few moments. But when she knows that there is truly no chance for her survival, she is reverting to who she truly is.
[I am no destroyer. I would rather die and lose everything dear to me before taking the life of someone else...]
This is the basic principle she followed all her life. And she decided to uphold her principle at this last moment.
She didn’t have the strength to stand anymore. She looked at her hand that was holding the sword as she felt like losing her support. She saw her hands disintegrating and the little particles traveling into the vortex in Calantar’s hands.
Alexandra laughed in her heart. She mocked herself for her stupidity. All she had to do was raise her sword and pierce Calantar and she could have gotten what she wanted, probably. Or she could have taken the easy path and agreed to the deal with Calantar.
But here she is... disintegrating into nothing to uphold her principles.
[The path of a hero... is stupid... but fulfilling...I helped a lot...I lived a worthwhile life...and...]
That was the last thought she had as she fell to the ground. She still had little of her conscience left. Her hands have now gone and her arms were starting to disintegrate. In her blue eyes, she saw Calantar smirking. She could hear her sneer.
But she didn’t want to think about Calantar. The image of Maximus extending his hand to her popped into her memory. That day, she was in the pit and he was standing above her. Although she had the memory of all of their lives, that image held a very special position in her heart.
[My love...]
Alexandra closed her eyes.
