Survive As The Brute's Wife-Chapter 192: New Beginning
One year later...
"You’re back already!" Maximus was surprised.
"I am. You weren’t there and..." she paused seeing him chuckle. "I like it here," she said not minding his chuckle, and closed the portal.
It was the coronation day of Marcus and Alexandra went there alone. She wanted to bring Maximus with her but he wanted to take care of the harvest. And since everything was arranged perfectly for the coronation, she was not in the mood to stay there.
A year did make a lot of difference and for the better. She loves her life here on the farm. She has learned to be the farmer’s wife. People in the town know them as Maximus and his wife and somehow that made her feel so fulfilled.
"Is it over?"
"No... I met Marcus and returned. I went there for him anyway..." Alexandra walked to the kitchen and drank water. "Ah... I feel..." she patted her chest. "Flavia’s son is so adorable," her face brightened. "He is so chubby and he looks a lot like..." she cleared her throat as she felt the acid rising from her stomach.
"Julius! He wants to see you..." she continued. "And Pricilla is pregnant."
Maximus walked to her. She’s been feeling this way for a few days now. He was worried. She told him that she is human. And he didn’t understand that.
She can still use magic.
No one can summon any beasts now. She said that it was because he wanted her to brag with her beasts that the creator was not pleased. She said that the Creator wanted everyone to be in their place in their respective worlds.
The portals to other worlds are closed and this world is isolated as every other world in the universe now. They cannot even get to the elves since their kingdom is closed to them although they are in the same world. Alexandra said that it was the Creator who made it happen.
Well, he didn’t care about it much.
As for her ailment, he didn’t know what to make of it. Her temperature is normal and she is acting as usual, but at times she is acting out as if her mood changes. She is feeling tired a lot and she is not eating well as she used to. She is feeling nauseated at times.
He is worried.
"I am calling for the doctor," he said.
"No! I’ll be fine after sleeping," she mumbled and walked up the stairs. She didn’t want to see a doctor.
His heart skipped a beat.
«A baby? For us? But she would have known it, right?»
Maximus did end up calling for a doctor. The doctor told them the good news.
"I am...?" Alexandra’s eyes clouded as she couldn’t believe it. She was waiting for a baby for a long time and just when she thought she doesn’t have to expect anymore, she is learning that she is pregnant?
Maximus hugged her. His eyes watered without him realizing it.
"We are going to have a baby, Lexa..."
Alexandra hugged him back. "We are..." she wiped her eyes.
[I am blessed... But one day I will have to...]
-----
Days passed and seasons changed. Alexandra watched as her husband toiled on the farm and she would help him. She became well versed in household chores and she rarely used her magic.
They had three children—two boys and a girl. Their eldest son had her appearance and Maximus’ temperament. He loved the farm as much as Maximus does. She loved Nicholas. Her youngest son Augustus loved to run around the village. He had many contacts and he is interested in trading. Their daughter Benica is the gentlest soul she has ever known. She is good with animals and she loves taking care of the animals on their farm.
Although they were not poor, they lived simple life. They employed a lot of people and their harvest was always plentiful, but rather than storing everything for themselves, they shared and found joy in that. Alexandra placed the box that her father gave her safely inside her cupboard.
She would think about her family often. It’s been ages since she saw them. She had a vision that they are living in another world now. She hoped that was the case. She knew they would miss her just like she misses them.
She wished they are as happy as she is.
Their kids married one by one. They all built houses closer to their home and they all helped with the farm. And one by one, they got to see their many grandchildren.
Marcus was ruling with benevolence and they were pleased to see the good relationship with their neighboring kingdoms. Arioch was still alive and rumors were that there was a wailing ghost living in the tower he was kept at.
He became the wailing ghost.
On Maximus’ fifty-fifth birthday, Alexandra and Maximus sat on the bench by the oak tree and looked at the sunset.
"Tired?" Maximus asked holding her hand. Her hands have gotten rough as she helped with his work. "You were supposed to be a Princess of heavens, Lexa. And you were with me, living as a mere farmer’s wife. Half of the villagers don’t even know your name. At times I wonder if I stopped you from being~"
"You have to say this every year, haven’t you?" Alexandra playfully hit his hand. "I am where I want to be," she leaned her head on his chest. "And I am happy."
Alexandra truly was happy. For many years and many lives, it was Maximus who followed her around and did whatever to find her. And when he found her, he did everything for her. And this is the only chance she gets to do something for him. He wants to become a farmer and she wants to be his wife.
She truly is blissful.
Maximus looked at her. her curved eyelashes still were mesmerizing as the first time he noticed them. She has tanned a bit and around her eyes were fine lines. She would say that lines are marks of her happiness.
Oh, how much I love her!
"I am wondering when we’ll have to do the other thing he asked of us," Alexandra said. This is what the creator asked of her in return for living her life with Maximus.
"Aren’t we getting old?"
"Hmm..." Maximus kissed her head. "But I am feeling tied to this place..." he said. Living here for decades, this has become their home.
She talked to him about the thing she has to do. Of course, he will agree to her decision. And he will follow her wherever she goes. But he will miss this place.
The sun started to sink into the distant hill and the sky darkened. The last chirp of the birds had died down as every creature of the day went to sleep. The crickets and the bugs started to make noise and slowly the creatures of the night woke up.
Since it was Maximus’ birthday all their kids, and their grandkids had dinner together in their home. The happy chatting of their children, grandchildren, their son-in-law, and their daughters-in-law... It was blissful.
After dinner, the kids were put to bed and the adults stayed up for chatting some more. They all became tired and they all went to rest sparing Alexandra and Maximus.
"Shall we?" Maximus held out his hand.
Oh, that smirk she loved on his face....
"Can’t carry me anymore?" Alexandra mocked him.
"Oh, you did not..." Maximus was provoked by her mocking and he lunged at her to grab her.
"No! You’ll pull your back, Max!" Alexandra tried to get away from him.
They heard the sound of the drapes fluttering and through the window, they saw a luminescence in the oak tree. Alexandra stood motionless as a gentle breeze caressed her face. She heard that voice she heard a long time ago.
It is the time!
Maximus stopped, seeing her standing frozen. His eyes ended up at the tree too. He knew it is time. He closed his eyes and took in a deep breath. He walked to her and placed his hand gently on her shoulder.
"Shall we, Lexa?" he asked.
Alexandra turned and smiled at him.
"Yes."
"Our kids...?" Her heart pounded thinking of their children.
"They know. They will be fine," Maximus kissed her temple.
"Yes," Alexandra whispered.
[He promised that they would be blessed...]
Both of them walked to the tree. The luminescence at the trunk of the tree got brighter as they got closer to it. And in the middle, they saw vibrant colors that appeared to be fluttering.
Maximus held Alexandra’s hand and walked forward. Alexandra was surprised to see his fearless gait. Even she was a little hesitant to step into the portal that would lead them to a new world that needs her help.
[My husband is the bravest!]
As they got closer, the portal got bigger to accommodate them and they could enter. She looked around and there was only darkness. But at the distance they saw green. And when there is green, there would be prosperity.
Maximus didn’t let go of her hand. When they stepped out, they saw the portal disappear behind them.
Maximus was a little sad to leave the place he calls home. But this is it. His wife stayed by his side for ages and now it is time for her to do what she does the best—be the guide. And he will be her helper.
After all, he would love any place if she is there with him.
Alexandra turned to her side to look at her husband.
"You look..."
She was stunned for words.
"What?" he looked at her. And his eyes widened.
There she is, his wife... young as he saw her in the pit, digging her own grave. He looked at the reflection in her eyes.
He has turned young too!
"My handsome husband..." Alexandra smiled. "Aww... I didn’t think I could repeat our life together in this place... Isn’t he gracious?" she asked.
"Yes..." Maximus said coming out of his stupor. "Yes, he is... And my dear wife, even eternity would feel like mere moments when I am with you," he kissed her.
Alexandra held his hand tightly. His warm hands were gentle and strong as the day she held them that day when he lifted her from the pit.
"Let’s..." she smiled.
Why would she not smile? Her only love is by her side and she gets to have another chance at living. Who else would be this blessed?
Both of themwalked through the dense woods. The twigs and fallen leaves under their feet crushed making a noise.
Holding each other’s hands with love, hope, and joy in their hearts, they stepped forward, with no hesitation.
Here’s to a new beginning!
