Chapter 14: Another solo Raid! I turned a test to a contest

In the thick Alkarya forest, at one of its most dangerous zones.

The Black Snake group and Oliver Mori had stopped in their tracks.

Bentley, who had led the group the entire way, turned to Oliver and the woman standing right beside him. He smiled awkwardly before speaking.

"As I said before, we Black Snakes take safety precautions for new members joining us," Bentley began, and a faint round of chuckles erupted from his group. "It would be stupid of us to carry just anyone without testing their skill set. That’s why we implemented this method."

"What method?" Oliver asked, pretending to be confused at what Bentley meant. In reality, he had already gone through this in his first life.

The Snake Group would take new recruits to this exact spot and pit them against a horde of Gnolls.

Watching their battle capabilities, helping them get out of rough situations if they admired one’s abilities.

But if they did not...

They would leave the person to die a horrible death.

At the thought, Oliver turned to the other person beside him. A woman with long, clean white hair, wearing a total black suit, with a pair of dual blades in scabbards strapped to her waist.

’She wasn’t here in the first timeline. Maybe because I was not in the summoning room, they picked her up.’ Oliver thought, glaring at her face with some sort of familiarity he could not grasp. ’I wonder who she is?’

"It’s a survival test, Mr. Crow," a woman in the Snake group said, walking over to him with an alluring wink.

He turned from her indifferently. Of the entire group, this woman—Mrs. Chu Hina—was the one Oliver wanted to kill the most.

So he did his best to avoid her.

"A survival test? Against what?" the white-haired girl asked, her voice oozing with confidence.

A smile stretched across Bentley’s lips at her question, and he gestured for Oliver and the white-haired woman to follow.

The three walked along the surface of the massive obsidian rocky plateau, each step sending a sharp crackling echo of shoes against stone into the air. It wasn’t quiet, and the closer they got to the escarpment, the more the distant, lingering sounds of monsters reached them.

Low growls.

Scraping claws.

Bone-chilling howls that reverberated through the rocks.

The white-haired woman tensed from the sound alone, turning to the Crow with worried eyes.

Eyes that met with nothing but Oliver’s gold-hardened resolve.

With that, she shook off the feeling and continued, staying a step behind the other two.

"You have to survive five minutes, or if possible, wipe the enemy out," Bentley explained along the way, his voice carrying a false sense of care that fell on Oliver’s deaf ears.

Finally, the three reached the edge of the plateau.

What they saw sent chills up their spines.

The white-haired girl tensed, this time turning to Bentley. "Are you insane?" she asked through gritted teeth, her eyes not once leaving the horrors below.

There, after the slope of the plateau, were dozens of humanoid monsters. With the upper bodies of hyenas, they looked ferocious, towering several meters tall.

They were Gnolls.

"Don’t worry, they aren’t that dangerous," Bentley joked, winking at the white-haired woman.

She didn’t buy his stupid act. Her demeanor twisted into visible worry and fear at what lay beneath them.

She wasn’t even sure if the Snake Group themselves could handle this many...

’No, I must talk sense into them,’ she thought, raising her hands as she began to speak.

"They are too many of them! How are we supposed to—"

SWOOSH!

A violent gust of air slammed against their faces.

It came suddenly, fast enough to cut off her words and left both of them awestruck.

"What just—" the white-haired woman fell short of words as the harsh sound of stone being scraped violently echoed in her ears.

It wasn’t just her.

Bentley and the rest of the Snake group hurried over to the escarpment of the plateau.

Down the slope, sliding with no hint of fear nor hesitation was the Crow.

He placed one foot ahead of the other, knees bent slightly as he controlled his descent, boots grinding harshly against jagged rock. Sparks flickered briefly beneath his soles as he skidded downward with terrifying precision.

And with that—

The entire attention of the horde locked onto him.

Gnolls snarled.

Some let out ear-piercing roars.

Others dropped to all fours, their massive limbs tearing into the ground as they charged toward him with killing intent.

"Fine enough," Oliver whispered to himself, summoning the crimson, blood-sucking daggers into his grasp.

Waves of dark smoke curled violently around him, twisting and compressing until they took the form of the monstrous Dark Crow, its hollow eyes glowing faintly as it circled him mid-air.

"Attack!"

The Dark Crow burst forward like a launched spear.

It tore through the air with a piercing shriek, meeting the first line of Gnolls head-on.

Talons struck first—

RIPPING through flesh.

Half the face of a Gnoll was torn clean off in a spray of blood and bone fragments.

The monster crashed into the ground instantly, its massive body skidding and kicking up clouds of dust and grit.

’Thanks to its minor evolution, the Dark Crow has gotten significantly stronger... Now let’s see my own improvements.’

Oliver launched forward.

The ground beneath him cracked from the force as he propelled himself into the air, closing the distance in a blink.

His dagger struck.

A vicious, precise thrust—

PIERCING through the eye of the leading Gnoll.

The blade drove clean through its socket and burst out near its ear, dragging a violent arc of blood through the air.

The next two Gnolls cackled maniacally as they lunged at him.

One snapped its jaws toward his head.

Oliver sidestepped effortlessly.

The creature flew past him—

Only for his elbow to CRASH into its ribs mid-motion.

A sickening crack echoed as the impact sent it spiraling, its body slamming into the ground and rolling lifelessly.

The next Gnoll slashed wildly at him.

Claws tore through the air—

Fast.

Relentless.

And Deadly.

Yet every strike met nothing.

Oliver’s body flowed between attacks like a shadow, his movements sharp, minimal, and efficient.

Another Gnoll joined.

Then another.

Then another.

Until more than five of them surrounded him at once.

Claws, fangs, and raw brutality converged in a chaotic storm.

Only then—

Did Oliver stop evading.

"So very slow... Even a dozen of you won’t be able to handle me."

His dagger flashed.

A throat split open.

Hot blood sprayed across his face.

He ducked under a savage claw, twisted—

And drove a brutal kick straight into another Gnoll’s face.

CRACK!

Bone shattered instantly.

Its skull caved in, fragments of flesh and brain matter scattering violently across the battlefield.

Oliver raised his dagger just in time to parry a massive claw.

CLANG!

The force sent vibrations through his arm, nearly knocking the weapon from his grip.

’My stats are not enough to handle physical clashes head-on...’

He stepped back sharply, narrowly avoiding another wave of attacks.

’But I’ve dragged this on long enough.’

A single breath.

That was all he needed.

[Stealth skill has been activated]

[Short Burst]

FWOOOSH!

It lasted less than a second.

Yet that moment burned itself into the minds of every Snake Group member watching above.

Bentley’s face drained of color.

The others stood frozen.

The white-haired girl—

Completely speechless.

All they saw—

Were flashes of red.

Blinding.

Relentless.

Demonic streaks slicing through the battlefield.

Oliver’s daggers moved faster than the eye could track, carving through flesh, severing throats, ending lives in absolute silence.

One.

Two.

Five.

Ten.

Twenty—

Every Gnoll fell before they could even react.

Bodies staggered.

Then collapsed.

One after another.

A massacre completed in a heartbeat.

And then—

Silence.

Oliver reappeared several meters away.

Standing still.

Dripping in blood.

"This is good level grinding... I almost feel appreciative of the old man," Oliver muttered, turning his gaze upward toward the Snake group.

They were stunned.

Lost.

Unable to process what they had just witnessed.

"So this is the power of a solo player..." the white-haired woman muttered under her breath.

But Bentley—

Bentley had a different expression.

One Oliver had only seen once before.

Fear.

Pure.... Undeniable fear.

Oliver smiled inwardly at this.

"Good." He said "I’ll recreate the end properly this time."
