Chapter 31: First Evolution 1 Top Ranker

Oliver had left the premises of his former home with nothing but the clothes on his back and, thankfully, his communication device, which was tucked into his trousers pocket.

It was dead, but that at least saved him the cost of buying a new phone.

He stood in the alleyway for a while, thinking about his next course of action.

Since he was pressed for money, the best option he had was to go to the Awakened Association, which was in charge of ranking new Talent Awakeners after their first entry into the Game.

Usually, after getting ranked, an Awakener regardless of rank would be offered a modest ten thousand Credits every month, enough to cover basic living expenses for an average citizen, with just a little room for overspending.

This was not an option Oliver wanted.

The best way of making money as a Talent Awakener was to get scouted by Guilds or the government after their first Game raid.

That way, depending on the ranking from the test, they could be offered up to a million Credits.

In his first life, Oliver never had any of these privileges.

He was simply too weak and grew far too slowly for any guild or even the government to accept him. Typically, he was seen as a waste of resources.

Right now, Oliver was different.

He was a Level Ten Player, and it had only been two months since he entered the Game.

This was a feat that would make many Guilds desperate to recruit him; he could even be offered upwards of a hundred thousand Credits.

Still, no matter the payment, Oliver could never be enticed.

’I have to buy some time and gather a little bit of information before I go to the Association,’ he thought, leaving the alleyway with a solution for his current living conditions.

---

Time passed with Oliver travelling a great distance from his former building through familiar roads. Thanks to his stamina as an Awakened, moving miles on foot wasn’t much of a hassle...

At least, until his stomach began to grumble.

The faint ache slowly sharpened into a hollow hunger, gnawing at his insides with quiet persistence.

He entertained the idea of entering stealth mode and robbing a few shops along the way, but discarded those thoughts a second after they surfaced.

A human stealing—maybe survivable.

But an Awakener caught stealing?

That was typically suicide.

Luckily, he didn’t need to entertain those dangerous thoughts for long, as he eventually reached a massive house, painted in pristine white and pink colours. The door stood out—a deep red slab made from expensive Wrywood, a magically fortified material capable of withstanding immense physical pressure from seasoned Awakeners...

Or even monstrous fiends.

Oliver stood by the door without knocking, knowing that it wasn’t necessary.

Definitely not for the person he was visiting.

Moments later, the door swung open, revealing the familiar old face of Headmaster Raven, dressed in a pair of shorts and a long jersey.

He seemed confused as to why Oliver was here and even more so by the awful smell coming off him, as if he had been sleeping in a dumpster.

"I need a place to stay. I lost my home," Oliver said bluntly.

Raven furrowed his brows, rubbing his long white beard. "I’m sorry, Oliver... I really wish I could offer you that, but I have a visitor in my—"

"I’ll send over the payment now," Oliver continued, ignoring the Headmaster’s words.

Headmaster Raven raised an eyebrow, trying to suppress his irritation. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

’Payment? Didn’t he hear me? What’s he even trying to do—send me Credits? Or maybe ten Karma points?’

Raven pushed the door slightly to close it and...

[Ding]

The Headmaster’s eyes widened as a notification appeared before him. His gaze flickered between the status screen and Oliver several times before he slowly stepped aside.

"Well... I’ll give you a week. You can have your usual room and please get a change of clothes," Raven said, a grin spreading across his lips.

Oliver simply nodded and walked past him, briefly taking in the magnificent building, just as he remembered it.

The wide hall opened up before him, with two elegant curved staircases leading to the first floor. The large lobby gleamed under soft lighting, adorned with genuine golden vases holding vibrant plant life, and expensive tapestries lining the walls like silent witnesses of wealth.

’The Headmaster’s taste is still as extravagant as ever.’

Oliver thought, turning slightly to glance at Raven, who followed right behind him.

’Money runs this world... Have enough value, and even men like Raven learn how to bow.’ Oliver sighed, ’For an academy Headmaster, I just granted him his vacation... How pathetic.’

[You have sent 100 Karma Points to the Old Sage]

---

A while passed, and Oliver had fully settled into the room he was given.

He had taken a long, detailed bath, scrubbing away the grime of the streets, and changed into the clothes available there. Now, he sat on the soft comfort of the bed, allowing his body a brief moment of rest.

The room Raven had given him was one of many within the mansion—one he had once used to house special classes for his best students, among whom Oliver had once been included.

Memories of that time lingered faintly...

But Oliver had long since forsaken them as useless—nothing more than fragments that no longer served him.

Not wasting any time, he summoned the holographic status screen.

[You have reached Level 10]

[First Evolution Acquired]

[Would player like to evolve]

Oliver sat still for a moment, his hand resting against his chin as he thought.

If he were to evolve here, he had no idea what effect it would have on him—or on the Dark Crow. And given that this was not his property, risking damage to the Headmaster’s mansion didn’t sound appealing at all.

Especially considering how much he had already paid.

A fortune he could have converted into money—but no.

Only those with an Awakener’s ID could legally sell Karma Points without getting hunted down or eliminated by the government.

Still...

He needed to hide his abilities, refusing to let the same mistake that gotten him killed in his first life happen again.

The Headmaster was certainly suspicious of his abilities now, especially after seeing the amount of Karma Points Oliver had accumulated in just a month.

And right now... he was probably using his ability to spy on him.

With that, Oliver made up his mind.

’The safest option is to evolve in the Game.’

He summoned the system.

[Welcome back, Lord Crow.]

"Cut the honorifics. Take me to the Game."

[Request accepted]

[Welcome, Top Ranker: Realm of the Fallen Gods]

"Top Ranker? What the fuck..."

Oliver’s consciousness faded from reality, his senses dissolving in an instant as he was pulled away—

—and transported into the Realm of the Fallen Gods.
