Chapter 239: What Was He? (Ch.239)

"You can’t do this!" Zariah hissed, shielding Askel as the council werewolf and council vampires advanced on him.

"Zari... don’t..." Askel began to dissuade Zariah but Zariah shook her head firmly.

"Askel is back to normal! He is in full control! What the hell do you mean he is to be tried?!" Zariah demanded.

The pandemonium was yet to calm and the supernatural council led by Lord Kodin had arrived at the scene.

Word had been sent to the supernatural council urgently and they had arrived by portal travel, and now, before the Ethereal Alphas, Lord Kodin had just announced that Askel would be apprehended.

"Alpha Zariah, stand down! This is not something you can or should interfere with!" Lord Kodin instructed firmly.

"Yet I intend to!" Zariah hissed.

"Zariah! Think rationally! Look around you!" Lord Kodin snarled.

Zariah passed a glance around, wincing visibly at the sight. There were at least a dozen dead humans, and a few Ethereal Alphas were heavily injured.

But that was the least of their troubles. The few who had survived Askel’s rampage had since begun exhibiting savage behaviour much similar to Askel’s, humans and wolves alike.

But it was different from Askel’s in the sense that their physical appearance was slowly being completely altered. Though the royal lycan wolves had swiftly taken caution to restrain all four currently exhibiting such symptoms,

It was clear to all eyes what was happening, if the blackened veins were not already a dead giveaway. All the four survivors from Askel’s rampage were turning forsaken.

Zariah did not understand how it was even possible, it was happening right before her eyes and yet she could not bring herself to move aside and let the supernatural council take Askel.

Her mind was in a state of overdrive, too many things were happening at once, that feeling of Deja Vu nagged consistently and it seemed her own misfortunes were playing out again,

Only this time, the victim was Askel. The only sound thought Zariah could form, all Zariah knew was that she had to protect Askel.

"Askel knows nothing about this! Such a thing has never happened before, there is certainly more to this and Askel is a victim! Why would you apprehend him?! Who apprehends the Ethereal King in his own domain?!" Zariah hissed.

"As of this moment!" Lord Kodin declared in a firm tone.

"All titles and duties associated with Askel Vance Niolen are forfeit! This is not a case to be taken lightly! If there was another way, I also would not want to take him down! But we all know just what kind of threat the forsaken is! You, better than anyone, Alpha Zariah!"

"If there is even the slightest possibility that Askel Vance Niolen is associated with the forsaken, he will be tried and judged by the laws of the supernatural council! As Alpha of the Crimson Moon Pack, it is your duty to ensure this is so! Stand down! Do not disappoint me!" Lord Kodin warned.

There was no availability of compromise in Lord Kodin’s tone. Zariah did understand it, that the forsaken was an evil the supernatural council would never tolerate, not even if it meant sacrificing Askel.

Askel could turn others forsaken... this meant Askel himself... what exactly was he?

There was just one answer to that: A threat to the entire supernatural realm and the peace they had enjoyed for over a century.

"Zari... there is no going back from this. Let Kodin do his job...there are many eyes, do not let them see you falter, my love." Askel said to Zariah in a low tone.

Zariah could hear the guilt and resignation in Askel’s tone, the moment he had returned to his senses and saw the carnage he had caused, Zariah knew Askel would be unable to forgive himself.

And there was nothing she could do or say that would lighten the impact of this sight in his eyes.

Still yet, Askel placed a hand on the small of her back, squeezing lightly to offer comfort, but it only had Zariah’s heart aching terribly.

Zariah slowly stepped to the side, but she lifted a hand to stop the council werewolf who held silver cuffs.

"Do not... dampen his pride anymore. These are his people watching...let him go himself." Zariah pleaded in a low tone.

Askel passed Zariah a grateful look before he straightened his stance, despite his tattered appearance.

He walked with his head held high as he was escorted away by the supernatural council.

"The Ethereal Alphas shall return to the Ethereal Palace at once, and await at the guest accommodation! Beta Lucas will see to it that the human settlement is restored to calm and as for the deceased... the supernatural council will lay claim to the corpses as a part of the investigation." Lord Kodin announced his orders, loud and clear.

"For intentionally inciting this situation to prove a point, thereby triggering this carnage in human territory... Alpha Caedmon Grey of the Waning Moon Pack will also be apprehended by the council." Lord Kodin added, passing Zariah a sympathetic look.

It lasted only for a brief moment before he strode off.

"Zari..." Allen said to Zariah as he came to stand beside her. His tone pained.

"We should leave too...they will need...to put things here back in order." Zariah said with difficulty.

Forcing one foot ahead of the other, Zariah made her way back into the woods that separated the human settlement from that of the royal lycans.

Zariah just kept on walking, her hands trembled at her sides and at some point, Zariah collapsed to the ground.

"Oh, Zari..." Allen said, crouching down beside Zariah.

"Allen... what am I to do? What can I do? I was so mean to him...I only just began to treat him right..."

"Is Askel going to be killed? Will he... will he... what... how can I...?" Zariah stuttered, her breaths coming out in short but rapid pants.

"Breathe Zari... please breathe..." Allen pleaded, he pulled Zariah into his arms, hugging her tightly to his chest.

Zariah broke down into sobs, she trembled from head to toe and Allen held her even tighter, knowing no other way to be of help. He gazed up at the sky, silent tears streaming down his own cheeks.
