Chapter 105: The other way around.

~Dahlia’s POV~

My body shook as more tears slipped past my eyes, and as much as I tried not to think about Alpha Zarek and the strange food still dissolving into nothing but a pile of stinky mush with each passing second on the floor, I couldn’t help it.

I may be wrong but I couldn’t shake out the thought that he’d tried to kill me. That he’d brought me a poisoned meal, and that he was just as bad as everyone else.

Goddess, I tried to stop crying. I desperately wiped at the tears running down my face. But for some reason, I couldn’t. My body shook with pain so deep that my wolf recoiled within itself, sniffling and shaking with rage as if the pain of betrayal was worse than the near-death experience.

More tears ran down my face and this time, I wiped it off angrily. I was mad. Mad at Alpha Zarek for bringing this meal. Mad because I am too powerless to retort the way I was meant to. And hell, I was mad at myself for being so weak. So soft. So easily affected by his actions.

"You know, crying wouldn’t solve anything?" Grandmama Lupe’s voice suddenly called out from her corner of the room, and I flinched in surprise, mainly because I had totally forgotten about her presence.

For a minute, I thought I was alone in this room. Alone in this world.

I sniffled, turning to her. "He tried to feed me poisoned food." 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

Between the tears running down my face, I saw her throw her head up as if frustrated by my tantrums. And when she dropped her gaze to meet mine, I gasped, my breath catching in my chest when I noticed her swirling blue orbs.

But wait, aren’t her eyes meant to be silver?

"You saw his reaction. You know he didn’t do it. So tell me child, why are you desperately trying to pin this on him?"

"Because he brought it here!" I snapped, my voice breaking at the end of the sentence. "Because it would never have gotten to me if he didn’t bring it here. Trouble follows wherever he goes."

She snorted. "Oh don’t be ridiculous mòn cherè, it would have gotten to you! Because whoever wanted you dead would have sent someone else to do the job." She snapped in annoyance, and because I knew just how right she was, I sealed my lips shut.

An awkward silence descended upon us for the next few minutes, and I had almost begun to think that this was probably the end of our conversation when she shifted on her bed, in a way that she could now face me fully.

Her still swirling blue eyes drilled into the side of my head like a tiny blade. And then she sighed. When she began to speak again, her voice was soft, careful, her tone slow, as if talking to a child. As if she didn’t want me scared. She muttered; "I do not know what you and Alpha Zarek have going on but I see a lot of sexual tension between you too."

My jaws dropped.

"I also see a lot of unresolved tension. Unwarranted anger. You’re both adults but you behave like children... and I won’t blame you much, you’re still pretty young."

"And what are you? A seer?" I asked, rolling my eyes, and a smile tugged at my face when she smiled at that.

"A crazy lady." She supplied, still smiling. "I’ve said that to you countless times."

I wanted to tell her that she didn’t sound crazy to me. I wanted to reassure her that I preferred her ’crazy’ to every sane person in this pack, but I decided against it. Smiling instead as I watched her dramatically dab the corners of her mouth with her bloody handkerchief.

Surprisingly, for the first time in a very very long time— and I mean way before I began to dream of hitting puberty— I felt seen by someone else. I felt some strange kind of bond with this woman even though she was pretty creepy in a way.

So without a thought, without fear that I might be outed— I mean what else was there to tell about me when she knows that I really was?— I said; "He’s my mate."

"He’s not your only mate." She answered immediately, causing my eyes to widen in surprise. "But now, I understand where the flying sparks and the suffocating sexual energy are coming from."

"Ma’am?"

"Oh, shit!" She cursed, facepalming herself. "Why’s it that you listen to everything I say, child? Why’s it that you’re the only person who believes in this crazy lady?!"

"You just mentioned—"

"I know what I said," she snapped, rolling her eyes, "...and best believe that it’s as wrong as your other love interest!"

My eyes widened just as my mouth snapped open. Wait, does she mean—

"You mean Beta Orion?"

"You mean that both the Alpha and his Beta want you?!" She exclaimed, giggling excitedly like a teenager. "Oh baby, you sound like my very own maple tree at this point!"

I chuckled, ducking my head to hide the faint blush tainting my face and burning the tips of my ears. Holy hell, this woman makes me laugh so effortlessly. "Why do you keep mincing your words? It feels like you know some things, but you do not want to tell me about them?"

"Because my dear, what’s the fun in living when you already know what tomorrow brings?"

Considering her words, I shook my head. "Nothing."

"Good. So now, we finally agree on something!" She exclaimed dramatically whilst laying back down on her bed.

Now, I watched her with keen interest, noticing the way her eyes had returned to its former silver color, and wondering why even though that should creep me out, it didn’t.

I was drawn to her in a special kind of way.

Suddenly she whispered in a voice so low you’d think she didn’t want me to hear, but she did. She said; "You should know, child, that Alpha Zarek brought that food as a sign of peace. Because he cares. But there are other people here that want you gone. Other people who would even harm themselves just to make sure you’re hurt. And they can go as far as implicating Alpha just to do that."

"And you see why I say he’s trouble?" I asked, cocking my brows as I stared straight in her direction.

She smiled brightly at me— one that seeped into her now clear white eyes, and then she muttered; "A smoking hot trouble if you ask me. And if I was around your age, I’d jump at it."

I chuckled now, unconsciously wiping at my still wet face from all my crying earlier. "What are you, this grandma? You’re so hilarious!"

Grandmama Lupe smiled softly at me when I said those words. She muttered; "Does it matter?"

I shook my head. "No." Whilst smiling in fascination when her eyes gleamed with a warm green light.

"I thought as much... Now, please consider healing me, child. Or I won’t be around much to keep you entertained."

Oh damn!

My heart thumped when I remembered her earlier request, and now that I think about it, I needed to find a way to heal her.

I smiled. "I should." And with that, I began to unknot the gauze around my leg, because truth be told, I didn’t need them anymore. I was already fully healed. I could feel it. "But first, you’ll need to promise me to fake being ill for a few more days. I don’t want to be outed just yet."

Grandmama Lupe nodded enthusiastically. "I promise. I’d even lie that you watched over me and not the other way around."
