Chapter 162: A confession.

~Zarek’s POV~

The strange woman in front of me stirred awake, her eyes fluttering open as she squinted into the light, looking almost innocent.

"Urghhh." She groaned, stretching slowly, but suddenly froze when her deep dark eyes landed on me.

From here, I could hear the steady thumping of her heart; could sense it when her pulse quickened and a burst of phenomones (fear) seeped out of her. She gulped, a flicker of fear fleeting past her eyes, and with a slow squirmish bow, she muttered; "Good day, Alpha."

But I didn’t respond to her. I do not respond to traitors.

My silence seemed to rattle her even more than my presence. She scurried away from me, backing herself into a corner but froze again when she noticed the presence of several other bodyguards, and Orion in the room with us.

Her breath hitched in her chest and from the corner of my eye, I saw Dr Ava stir awake too; I however couldn’t help the smile that spread across my face when the woman’s eyes followed her movements, widening when the realisation of what this was dawned on her.

She stuttered, at Ava who seemed momentarily dazed. "Y-You?!"

Ava looked up at me in confusion, but as if suddenly regaining her senses, she bowed. "Good day, Alpha." Then to the other lady, she snapped; "Yes me. Is anything the matter?"

"Good day," I drawled, my annoyance evident in my voice when their bickering intensified, and pounding my fist against the small table close to me, I snarled; "What is this about?"

Ava’s eyes widened infinitesimally before they latched on the other woman in front of me, and I noticed as a knowing smile spread across her face before she turned to face me.

"I’m so sorry I slept off earlier and for constituting nuisance in your presence, Alpha. But I had to sedate her in order to keep her from escaping... and I had unintentionally sedated myself too. Also, she came at me."

I shrugged. "So what did you say she did?"

"I caught her burning a strange incense and performing a ritual for one of my patients two days ago. She also doesn’t work in the pack hospital and was pretending to be one of us." Ava explained quickly and I rolled my eyes, gesturing to her to continue talking as I was in no mood to drag this out any further.

Ava seemed to not understand my body language because then she squinted at me in confusion, her lips turning downward as she glared straight at the woman.

"Continue." I rushed out in irritation and she flinched— just barely— before she cleared her throat, turning to face me with wide expressive eyes.

"The incense is one we usually burn whenever a patient intentionally wants their memories cleared— which is a rare occurrence. But in this case, the patient earlier is in a comatose state and cannot ask for that."

I froze. "And what does that have to do with Dahlia? You said it had something to do with her right, so how does it?"

At my outburst, Orion turned to face me. He quirked his eyebrows at me as if saying; ’think!’ But before I could ponder over that or what Ava was implying, she continued;

"Dahlia once told me of a strange doctor who had attended to her when she awoke from her coma shortly after the parapet walk incident."

I froze. No no no...

Dahlia had lost some of her memories too....

"...and I think this woman here has something to do with it."

A shiver ran through me as an image of Dahlia lying in a pool of her blood under the pouring rain flashed in my mind, followed by the confusion on her face when she’d been told she committed suicide, and I shuddered slightly, my eyes hardening as all of this soon began to make some semblance of sense to me.

"...because she is the same fake doctor who had attended to Dahlia at the time. I’ve been searching for her for so long until two days ago."

As soon as those words settled in my mind, my heart came to a stuttering stop. Anger like no other rushed through my veins with a force strong enough to knock the breath out of me. My eyes hardened as I took in the frame of the woman in front of me, and from the fear evident in her eyes, and how she tried to back herself even further into the wall, I instantly deduced that Dr Ava was telling the truth.

But why?

Why had she done it?

"This woman is an enemy!" Moartea snarled, thrashing against my head suddenly. ’Shift! Let me out. Rip her to shreds. Kill her!’

’Not yet.’

’Then when?’

Ignoring him, I balled my hands into fists and growled out, the anger in my voice dripping so hard that it sent the guards, Dr Ava and the traitor falling to their knees.

Even Orion who was stronger than most of them— if not all of them— had a difficult time holding out against the force pumping through my veins and into the air. He bent his neck to the side in a gesture of surrender just as I growled; "Is that true?"

The woman stumbled backwards, her teeth clattering as her butt hit the floor. "I-I d-didn’t. I didn’t know."

"You didn’t know what?"

"I was clueless."

Her stupid replies riled me up more than I would like to admit and for some reason, it made my rage soar. It made me see red. I rose to my feet, ignoring the way she shuffled even further away from me, backing so much into the wall that I would’ve sworn she was a part of the bricks now if I didn’t know any better.

"Who sent you?"

At that, she balked. Her mouth snapped shut. Tears leaked out of her eyes in torrents but she made no attempts to speak. She wouldn’t even look at me anymore.

Eyeing her, I dropped my voice into a menacing whisper as I seethed; "speak now lady, do not make me hand you over to those men lurking in the shadows because trust me, they’ll get the words I need out of your mouth... but they wouldn’t get only the words out."

Dr Ava’s eyes widened, even the lady visibly deflated as soon as the words slipped out of my mouth and the implication of what I meant dawned on her. She dropped her head slowly, shaking violently as more tears poured out of her eyes.

"A-Alpha..."

"What’s your name?" I asked suddenly, causing her to snap her head up at me.

The room grew eeriely quiet.

"Zorina." She called out softly, her voice hoarse.

Oh, Zorina... that’s true. I remember seeing her one time when she’d refused to leave Dahlia’s hospital room; And yes, she’d been acting strangely even then.

"Why did you do it, Zorina?" I drawled quietly, my voice dripping with enough disdain to send chills down her spine. And it worked. She shivered.

"I w-was made to, your Grace." She cried. "I d-didn’t know her. I’ve never met her before."

"So who sent you?" I asked again, and just like before, her lips snapped shut. A strange kind of fear flashed across her face and she immediately cowered, hiding away from me.

"You have three seconds to tell me who made you do it. And after your time is up, I wouldn’t listen to a thing that you have to say."

She gulped then opened her mouth, but as if thinking against it, she quickly snapped it shut, her eyes glazing.

"I-I can’t." She stuttered quietly, her chest heaving as she took in deep ragged breaths. "I’ll be killed if I speak."

"And you’ll be killed if you don’t."

She froze, her eyes nearly bulging out of their sockets. "Really?"

"Try me." I sassed back, almost smirking when her face went deathly pale and so suddenly, she dropped to her knees, pressing her head against the ground as she cried out; "please!"

"Then speak."

"I cannot!" She cried even louder, now shaking violently as more tears slipped uncontrollably down her face. "I’ll be killed."

Her reaction coupled with her words irritated me immensely. I frowned, aggressively shoving her off when she made a grab for the hem of my pants.

My anger flared when despite all of these, she still preferred to keep the identities of those behind this hidden, and with a growl, I turned to Drogon. "Take her away... and make sure she is whipped severely before brought back to me. Make sure she is ready to speak by then too."

Zorina cried harder when she heard my words but I was done listening to her or continuing with this charade.

I watched silently until she was dragged out of the room, thrashing wildly as she was led to a place where only her punishment was the definite outcome.

A beat of silence settled in the room and then suddenly, just when I’d totally forgotten about Dr Ava’s presence, she spoke;

"I have a confession, Alpha."

I shrugged, rolling my eyes. "Be fast with it then, I have something to get to."

"I made Dahlia’s cloaking spell." She said quietly, and for a minute, I was stunned into silence, unsure if I had heard her clearly. Unsure if I understood the meaning of what she was implying.

"When Dahlia wanted to escape, she asked me to make a cloaking spell for her... and I did."

I froze. And then with my rage almost splitting my chest into two, I roared; "GET OUT!"
