The Alpha's Omega Mate-Chapter 58: Two sides of a coin.
The afternoon sun was hot, scorching and just the way she hated it as she navigated through the veil between the land of the dead and living.
However, she soon forgot all about the burning sun when something else caught her eye. A scene— one which was happening in the land of the living.
And it was something she hated. The kind of thing she abhorred with every living fiber in her body.
A man, hovering above a woman.
She doesn’t care what the hell it was that was happening, all she knew was that she didn’t like what she saw. And she didn’t like the way fear emanated from the weak woman like waves crashing against the sea shore.
Her fiery manes lit up, her blue eyes shining like bedazzling stars in the sky. And then she knew... she was about to strike. Just the way she hated it.
But something felt different this time however. Something didn’t feel right. She felt like she’d found a mark. The other side to the coin which was her. Her flesh. One she’d searched far and wide for.
And it was supposed to come as a means of comfort to her— the fact that she’s finally found a host— but did it? Of course, it didn’t.
The woman was a striking image of herself, and if she didn’t know any better, she’d have said it was her.
Or was it?
Was she the same as the weak woman sprawled on the floor, begging for death but not getting it?
What stupid games was fate playing?
And worst of all, why was the man stone and she hasn’t even done anything yet? 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
As these thoughts plagued her, she felt a rush of power. One she’s never felt before. Her body rose swiftly above ground level, her head falling backwards as her gaze fell upon the sun— the one thing she hated.
And then everywhere went black. She was supposedly a spirit but she fell unconscious.
~Dahlia’s POV~
Tears slipped out of my eyes as I scrubbed my body clean whilst standing under the scalding water faucet. But no matter how hard I scrubbed— and I scrubbed very hard, even to the point of causing micro-tears on my skin— I still didn’t feel clean enough.
I still felt like filth. Like dust under everyone’s boot. Like someone who’s witnessed what she was never meant to.
The more I thought about these things, the more my mind wandered over to the dead guard. The one who had tried to kill me this morning, and no matter how much I tried, I just couldn’t shake off the murder intent in his eyes when he hit me, or the way his eyes had turned bloodshot when he was finally murdered himself.
I shuddered. What had happened out there? How was Nyx’Zariel present and I didn’t even notice? And to top it all, why did she spare me, just to take the guard’s life instead?
After the numerous murder cases that happened this past week, I had begun to come to the conclusion that the Nyx’Zariel only attacked those that hurt others... that she only killed those who were no saints themselves and must’ve killed others too. But from what happened this morning, my suspicions had been proven to be true.
She had killed the guard and spared me.
The guard who wanted to kill me, and I, the victim.
"Dahlia, are you going to spend the entire morning bathing or do you not realize that there’s a long line of people waiting for you to be done?!" Madame Berlin’s voice snapped suddenly, snapping me out of my reverie as my elbow hit one of the walls of the bathroom.
A groan slipped past my lips and for a minute, I thought about giving her a snarky response, but as quickly as the thought came, I shook my head against it.
She had worse coming. Her boyfriend was just killed.
I fought to keep all thoughts of the dead guard at bay while I rinsed myself clean, draped a towel around my body and stepped out of the bathroom stall to indeed find four maidens waiting outside the door with deep frowns on their faces.
I dropped my gaze; "I’m sorry I took too long, my heat was yesterday and I had to scrub off all traces of it from my body."
While that might be true, it wasn’t entirely correct. None of the girls responded but their gazes softened— well, besides Madame Berlin who snorted derisively and spat;
"That’s all the whore is good for; Excuses!"
But I didn’t respond. I couldn’t bring myself to. Deciding to let her be as I couldn’t help but pity her, I made my way into my room and changed into some work clothes.
I had just styled my hair into a high ponytail and worn my boots when a loud mournful cry came from outside the compound. I stilled. I couldn’t move, just as my breath hitched in my chest.
They’ve found him.
His corpse.
I heard more thumping sounds as more people rushed outside the house, followed by more loud cries, and as it all happened, my heart wouldn’t stop beating fast. My body wouldn’t stop trembling and the sweat soaking through my blouse wouldn’t stop pouring out.
I let the commotion go on for another five minutes before I stepped out of the house, and by the time I did, I wasn’t so surprised when I saw how crowded the field was now.
Alpha Zarek and Beta Orion stood at the front of the crowd and while Beta Orion observed the bloody stone with curiosity and fear— which he failed to conceal— Alpha Zarek stood aloof to the side.
The crowd mourned. Madame Berlin was worse as her loud anguished cries rang through the fortress. I, on the other hand, was frozen in fear. A crippling fear that someone might’ve seen me flee the scene. Fear that I would soon be outed.
But none of those happened.
"Who saw what happened here earlier?!" Beta Orion bellowed in a loud voice but no one responded. Everyone was too stricken by fear to say a word.
And I, a firsthand witness, was rooted to the spot, tongue tied and frozen due to panic.
"The moon goddess has finally abandoned us!" Someone shouted from the back of the crowd, and while everyone seemed to agree with him, I didn’t.
Because I knew better.
The moon goddess never abandoned us. However, the goddess of fury and wrath has only been awakened, taking the evil in the world and purging the earth clean.
My eyes snapped up just then to find Ms Nyx at a far end of the crowd, watching, her eyes calculating, and for a second, I couldn’t help but wonder how all these killings started shortly after she joined the pack.
—And her name is Nyx.
Probably short for Nyx’Zariel.
I froze.
Was what I was thinking true? Was she Nyx’Zariel? WAS SHE?
