The Alpha's Villainess Wife-Chapter 41: Don’t Do Anything, Eve
[Three days ago, Mr. Patro Zolotov had made a claim against Malakai Basti’s wife, Eve Basti. We have waited for a response from Mrs. Basti, but she has been silent. Did she truly cheat with Malakai Basti? Was Mr. Zolotov really set up]
Eve stood in front of the TV within the second-floor living room, watching the broadcast.
[Well, here we are today at Malakai Basti’s company to interview Mr. Basti on this case]
Her hands balled into fists as she watched them approach Malakai who was just stepping out of his company.
[Mr. Basti, have you always had eyes for Mr. Zolotov’s ex-mate?]
[Mr. Basti, did you really have an affair with Mr. Zolotov’s ex-wife]
[Mr. Basti, why is neither you nor your wife speaking up on the case? Is it really true? Did you really have eyes for another’s mate? And if so, what have you got to say to Mr. Zolotov? Did your wife really set him up?]
Malakai was not answering any of them, but the announcement of it was clear as day in his eyes despite the pair of sunglasses he had on.
Her hands clenched into fists and she stormed towards the sofa, picking up her phone. She unblocked Patro’s number and called him.
It rang and just as expected, Patro answered.
[Oh?]
"What is the meaning of this?" she questioned.
[And what are you talking about sweetheart? You’ve got to be specific] he didn’t let her answer before adding, [Are you watching the broadcast? Malakai must really hate this situation. I mean those reporters are really all over him]
"This wasn’t our deal!"
[Meaning what?]
"You held your conference, and our deal was my silence. We never agreed that I’ll allow you to harass my husband!"
Silence stretched on the other side of the phone. [Your...husband?]
"You heard me correctly. My husband!"
Patro was pissed. It was clear in his voice that no trace of amusement could be detected any longer. [What does YOUR HUSBAND getting harassed have to do with me?]
"I know it’s you. I’m not stupid!" Eve snapped. "Those reporters would never have dared harass him like this if you didn’t pay them."
[You think very highly of me, don’t you—]
"No, you’re just a laughable coward, Patro. My silence wasn’t enough, is that it?"
[Silence? I’m not the one who whored her way into Malakai’s pan—]
"So what if I did?" Eve laughed. "Why do you care? Why does it pain you so much?"
[Eve!—]
"Whether or not I whored my way into his pants, it’s none of your business. You and I made a deal and this was not part of it. Get them off him because I will not let you do that to him. This is between you and me!"
[And what if I don’t, Eve? What will you do? What power do you have?]
Eve didn’t respond, fuming.
[You’re just going to sit and watch it happen? And you know why? Because there is nothing you can do. You have no power! You made a mistake when you married a man you knew I hated right before my eyes, oh and I will hurt him, I will make you miserable. After all, I’m sure you must be able to feel every bit of pain I cause him. He’s marked you, hasn’t he?]
"Hear yourself," she said to him with mockery in her tone. "How mad you sound." She ended the call before he could say another word and proceeded to run her fingers through her hair.
It would be a lie if she said she wasn’t stressed about the entire situation. There was no reason why Malakai had to be going through this because of her. Everyone knew he hated reporters. He avoided public appearances because of it.
Biting her fingers, she began to pace back and forth. She was thinking, trying to figure out what to do. Patro had been right. What could she even do? Nothing. She was powerless, and even Malakai who was with the power couldn’t do anything.
What could he do? Buy the reporters like Patro had done? That would make all the claims all the more true.
Her phone ringing all of a sudden drew her attention and she picked it up. It was Caius calling.
"Caius."
[Don’t do anything, Eve]
"What do you mean?" She frowned her face like he’d gone crazy.
[I know you’re seeing the broadcast. Don’t do anything, let it be]
"How can you ask me to? Malakai—"
[I know that. But Malakai will handle it. Let him. We’d rather not escalate the situation]
"That should be me, Caius. If anyone is going to get harassed by these people, it should be me. I’m the one who got him to marry..." She breathed out. "He—he doesn’t have to do this for me. They aren’t even giving him a chance to get to the car."
[I know that, I do. But I need you to control your emotions. You’re pregnant and emotional stress is not good for you. Malakai will be fine. He’s your mate, so don’t forget he can feel your distress in this moment]
She lifted her gaze to the TV where his men were trying to get him to the car. But the reporters just weren’t backing off.
"Okay... Okay." She nodded.
[Stay put, alright? Malakai will be fine]
"Okay." She breathed out, swallowing the anxiousness.
——
Malakai walked through the door with his briefcase in hand and dragged off his tie, tossing it onto the sofa.
He’d had to stop to meet with his brother who’d wanted to talk to him and currently, it was eight in the evening. He hadn’t even meant to come back so late.
The man took his suit jacket off and glanced at the bed for Eve, only to still at the sight of her on the bed curled up into a ball as if she were cold. But that wasn’t what had him frozen. It was simply that she was hugging onto his coat—one that had his scent all over it.
