The Archduke's Songbird-Chapter 226: The Cottage
Jessamyn stood by the tree Jaylene had mentioned, her mind swirling with thoughts as she tried to decipher the bird’s cryptic behavior. The bird, however, offered no further help and simply perched on a particular branch, staring at her in eerie silence.
Frustration mounting, Jessamyn knocked on the tree’s bark, hoping for some sort of response. She tried reasoning with the tree, pleading with it, and even mumbled every spell she knew. But nothing seemed to work. The tree remained stubbornly unresponsive.
Above her, Jaylene cawed a couple of times, the sound mocking Jessamyn’s fruitless efforts. The bird’s tone was eerily reminiscent of Jerrick’s mocking sneer, making her anger rise.
"Stupid bird," she muttered, her patience fraying. In a fit of frustration, she picked up a rock and aimed it at the annoying bird. But as she drew her arm back, she tripped over one of the tree’s protruding roots.
She stumbled, her hands flailing to catch herself. Instinctively, she grabbed a low-hanging branch to steady herself.
Click.
With a soft, almost imperceptible click, the branch moved down. Jessamyn felt a gentle rumbling beneath her feet, as if something had shifted. She looked around in confusion and then down at the spot where her hand had pulled the branch.
To her astonishment, she saw a hollow hole where the branch had been.
Heart pounding, Jessamyn peered into the opening, curiosity and excitement bubbling up inside her. The hollow space seemed to lead somewhere, beckoning her to explore further.
She glanced back at Jaylene, who was now watching her intently, its mocking demeanor replaced by something that almost looked like approval.
"Well, here goes nothing," she whispered to herself, steeling her nerves.
She took a deep breath and reached into the hollow hole, feeling the smooth wood beneath her fingertips. Her hand brushed against something cool and metallic. She pulled it out, revealing a small, intricately designed key.
Jessamyn’s eyes widened in wonder. The key was beautiful, with delicate engravings that seemed to shimmer in the dappled sunlight filtering through the tree’s branches.
"Now what do you unlock?" she mused, holding the key up to examine it more closely.
Jaylene cawed again, but this time it sounded less mocking and more encouraging. Jessamyn couldn’t help but smile at the change in the bird’s tone.
"Thanks, Jaylene," she said, her voice filled with renewed determination.
The moment she thanked the bird, it hopped down from its perch and sat in front of the opening. "Mynah..." it said, the affectionate intensity in its tone mimicking the way Jerrick used to call her name.
"Mynah... Mynah..." The bird repeated the name a couple more times, each repetition filled with a longing and yearning that tugged at Jessamyn’s heart.
The air behind the tree seemed to shimmer, a thin film of wavering blur appearing as if the fabric of reality itself was being distorted. The film flickered like a mirage, rippling gently as if touched by an unseen breeze.
Jessamyn’s curiosity was piqued, and she cautiously placed her hand over the film. To her astonishment, her hand slowly sank into it, disappearing beyond the surface. She quickly pulled it out, feeling the warmth from the other side contrast sharply with the biting cold that still lingered in Roche.
Still curious, Jessamyn stepped closer to the film, her heart pounding in her chest. She took a deep breath, her resolve solidifying as she prepared to step into the unknown. With a glance at Jaylene, who seemed to be waiting expectantly, she knew she wasn’t alone in this.
Holding the small key tightly in one hand, she stepped forward, the film parting around her like a veil. As she moved through, she felt a gentle warmth envelop her, a stark contrast to the frigid air of Roche. The sensation was almost soothing, like a comforting embrace.
Jaylene followed closely behind her, its presence a steady reassurance. Together, they emerged on the other side of the film, finding themselves in a place that felt like a dream. The air was warmer, filled with the scent of blooming flowers and the soft hum of life. The light here was golden, casting a serene glow over everything.
Jessamyn looked around, her eyes wide with wonder. The landscape was unlike anything she had ever seen, a blend of lush greenery and vibrant colors that seemed almost otherworldly. It was as if she had stepped into a hidden paradise, a sanctuary untouched by the harsh realities of her world.
Of course, the scent of jasmine was overwhelming.
"Where are we, Jaylene?" she whispered, her voice tinged with awe.
Her eyes landed on a thick veil of vines hanging between two ancient trees. A trail led up between the trees, disappearing through the curtain of greenery. With a mix of curiosity and trepidation, Jessamyn followed it.
She pushed aside the hanging vines and took a peek. Her heart dropped at the sight on the other side.
The scent of jasmine assailed her senses, almost intoxicating in its intensity. She saw rows and patches of jasmine flowers planted meticulously all around. In the center of this fragrant haven was a cottage, covered in vines of jasmine, fully blooming and spreading their heady fragrance.
It was the same cottage she had drawn when she was younger, a secret she had shared with Jerrick alone. And here it was, down to the last stone. Every detail, from the windows to the chimneys, matched her childhood drawing perfectly.
Tears welled up in her eyes as she took in the sight. The familiarity of it all was overwhelming. This place, which had existed only in her dreams, was real. She stepped forward, her legs trembling with a mix of disbelief and wonder.
Jaylene landed on her shoulder, its presence grounding her in this surreal moment. Jessamyn slowly made her way to the cottage, her hand brushing against the soft petals of the jasmine flowers. Each step felt like a step back in time, to a place where her dreams and reality intertwined.
Holding the key to her chest, she wiped the tears streaming down her cheek.
He did it! He truly built the cottage I wanted! He never forgot the time we spent together! He remembered... He remembered...
Reaching the door, she hesitated, her hand hovering over the handle. Memories of her childhood flooded her mind, of nights spent dreaming of this very place.
Taking a deep breath, she turned the key and pushed the door open. The interior was just as she had imagined, warm and inviting.
The furniture was simple but cozy, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of jasmine mingling with the smell of burning wood. She stepped inside, feeling an overwhelming sense of peace wash over her.
It was as if the cottage had been waiting for her all these years, a sanctuary hidden away from the world. Jessamyn walked around, touching the beautiful objects, her heart swelling with a mix of nostalgia and gratitude.
This place, this dream, was now a reality.
She turned to Jaylene, tears streaming down her face. "How is this possible?" she whispered, her voice choked with emotion.
