The Archduke's Songbird-Chapter 236: The Games
The day of the games dawned with a brilliant sunrise, casting a golden hue over the bustling city of Elodia. The streets were alive with excitement, as citizens from every corner of Ayberia flocked to the grand arena, a colossal structure built to honor the King of Ayberia.
Banners in vibrant colors fluttered in the breeze, bearing the symbols of various noble houses and regions. The air was thick with anticipation, filled with the sounds of laughter, chatter, and the occasional roar of approval from the crowd.
As the morning progressed, the arena began to fill to capacity. Merchants and vendors set up stalls around the perimeter, selling everything from delicacies to memorabilia. Children ran through the crowd, their faces painted with the colors of their favorite teams, while musicians played lively tunes, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Trumpets blared, signaling the commencement of the opening ceremonies. A hush fell over the crowd as the King of Ayberia, resplendent in royal robes, stepped onto the central platform.
Jerrick and William were both seated to the left of the king and the Crown Prince was seated to the right of the King. Everyone stood up and bowed to the King.
He raised his hand, and a cheer erupted, echoing through the arena like a thunderous wave.
Lady Celena was a permanent fixture by the King’s side, controlling his movements. It worked well since the public didn’t see the deterioration of the king.
The King tried to address his people, but that woman gently tapped her forearm. Like a pet dog, the King stepped back, allowing her to stand to the front.
But before she could utter one word, the Crown Prince stepped in.
"Today, we celebrate not only the spirit of competition but the unity and strength of our great nation!" the Crown Prince proclaimed.
His words were met with enthusiastic applause. Jessamyn looked at the king and his face had a tinge of pride. Lady Celene’s face, however, looked like a dirty oil lamp.
William smirked as the Crown Prince had done what he asked him to do. He need not wait for his father’s permission to speak anymore. He was the next in line. He had the authority mandated by the heavens.
The King took his seat, followed by the others. A procession of dancers and performers took to the field, their intricate routines mesmerizing the audience.
As the performers exited the stage, the focus shifted to the grand entrances of the competitors. Teams from every region of Ayberia paraded into the arena, each led by their champions, who waved to the cheering crowd. The spectators roared their approval, showing their support with banners, flags, and shouts of encouragement.
Jessamyn was impressed by Team Theodulf. She thought Bernard was tall but the men in the regiment were taller or at least the same height as Bernard. No one was shorter than Bernard. Each of them were built different than the other regiments from the other areas.
She did look at Team Arkhipov. They didn’t hold the same magnificence as they did when Joar was alive. The man leading them—Joar’s cousin was a scrawny guy sitting on a flamboyantly decorated horse. Maybe that played a factor.
It saddened her to see the once great family reduced to that.
That was the one time, she looked at that regiment. She then focused solely on Team Theodulf.
Then came a moment of tense silence as the herald announced the arrival of the delegates from Altania, Ayberia’s rival nation. The Altanian contingent marched in with a disciplined precision that spoke volumes about their training and resolve. Their crimson banners stood in stark contrast to the more colorful Ayberian ones, and their champions walked with an air of steely determination.
They bowed to the King and offered gifts, showing themselves to be there in peace.
Among the Altanian delegates were their own noble representatives, clad in armor and adorned with insignias that marked their rank and house.
The crowd’s reaction was a mix of wary respect and simmering tension. The history of conflict between the two nations was palpable, yet there was also a begrudging acknowledgment of the prowess and skill of the Altanian athletes.
The drums were beaten and the crown prince stood once more, raising his hand for silence. "Let the games be a testament to our strength, our honor, and our respect for each other, even in competition."
His words were a call for civility and sportsmanship, and they were met with nods and murmurs of agreement.
With a final, resounding cheer, the games were declared open. The arena buzzed with energy as the first events kicked off, with athletes from various regions displaying their prowess and skills.
Jessamyn, seated with a clear view of the field, cheerfully supported Team Theodulf. She was surrounded by an assortment of delectable snacks, from honey-glazed pastries to savory meat pies, and she munched on them with enthusiasm, her eyes sparkling with delight.
Cordelia and Isadora found ways to sneak beside Jessamyn, leaving their assigned seats. The women, dressed in vibrant attire that mirrored their team’s colors, waved flags and shouted encouragements. The camaraderie between the supporters of Team Theodulf and Team Kaiser was evident, as friendly banter and shared laughter punctuated the thrilling events.
Isadora, sitting beside Cordelia, cheered exuberantly for Team Kaiser. The two women, dressed in vibrant attire that mirrored their team’s colors, waved flags and shouted encouragements. The crown prince and the grand duke, the formidable nephew-and-uncle pair, had combined their strengths into a single, formidable team. Their synergy was evident as they strategized and executed their plans with precision, earning the admiration of the spectators. The crowd watched in awe as they dominated the field, their coordination and skill leaving little doubt about their prowess.
Jessamyn’s voice rang out clear and bright as she called out to the Theodulf athletes, her cheers filled with genuine support and pride. She clapped and laughed, her spirits lifted by the impressive performances unfolding before her.
Each successful move by Team Theodulf brought a cheer from her, and she shared knowing glances with other supporters, all united in their enthusiasm.
Isadora and Cordelia, meanwhile, were a bundle of excitement. They leaned forward in their seats, gripping the edges with anticipation as their team, Team Kaiser, took to the field. Cordelia’s eyes shone with pride, especially when the crown prince displayed his unmatched skills.
Isadora’s cheers were loud and unwavering, her voice melding with the roar of the crowd. In the competitions Bernard participated, her loyalty shifted to Team Theodulf.
The air was thick with the scent of victory and the promise of thrilling contests yet to come. As the day progressed, the friendly rivalry between the teams added a layer of excitement to the games.
Jessamyn and Isadora occasionally exchanged playful jabs, their competitive spirits adding to the fun.
As the sun began its descent, casting a warm, golden glow over the arena, the cheers and laughter continued unabated.
Night fell, casting a serene glow over Elodia as the first day of the games came to a close. The arena, once bustling with activity, now lay quiet, with only the distant hum of conversations and the occasional cheer echoing through the streets. Both Ayberian and Altanian teams had demonstrated exceptional skill, their performances nearly equal in all the sports, promising an exciting continuation of the games.
Jessamyn lay on her back on the soft bed, stretching her legs and staring at the intricately decorated ceiling of their chamber. The day’s excitement had left her both exhilarated and exhausted, a pleasant fatigue settling in her limbs. Beside her, Jerrick was a bundle of energy, talking non-stop about his experiences and triumphs on the field.
"Did you see how well I played today?" he asked, his voice brimming with pride and excitement. He sat beside her, leaning over with a boyish grin that made Jessamyn’s heart swell with affection.
Jessamyn turned her head to look at him, a smile playing on her lips. "You were incredible, Jerrick," she said, her voice soft and sincere. "I saw every moment. You were like a force of nature out there."
Jerrick beamed, his eyes sparkling with joy.
