The Archduke's Songbird-Chapter 282: Unbreakable Bond
When Jessamyn woke, the soft amber light of the evening filtered through the curtains, casting a warm glow across the room. She lay still for a moment, savoring the lingering tenderness in her body, the quiet remnants of their intimate moment still humming beneath her skin.
Yet, an emptiness tugged at her heart.
Jerrick’s warmth was absent from the space beside her, a contrast to what she had come to expect after sharing such a deep connection. Normally, he would hold her close, his presence grounding her, especially after moments like these when emotions ran high.
She sat up slowly, letting her fingers trace the indent in the bed where he should have been. A frown creased her brow as she recalled the vulnerability she had revealed in the heat of their passion.
Jerrick had been so gentle, so attuned to her needs that she had let her guard down completely, confessing secrets she had kept buried for so long. She had told him of the prophecy, of the death she foresaw—his death—and how it haunted her every waking moment.
For a heartbeat, Jessamyn froze, wondering if she’d made a mistake. Her walls, once so carefully constructed, had crumbled under his touch. But as she let out a shaky breath, she felt lighter, unburdened by the fear of holding onto those secrets alone.
Sharing them had been a relief, and she only hoped Jerrick understood the depth of her love and the torment she endured at the thought of losing him.
She dressed slowly, choosing a soft gown of deep violet silk that flowed like water around her. Her hands moved absently, her mind drifting between the warmth of Jerrick’s embrace and the anxiety of his absence. But she shook off her worry.
As long as they were together, nothing could harm them—of that, she was certain. In every vision where tragedy struck, they had been alone. Their strength lay in their unity, and as long as they remained side by side, she believed they could defy even fate itself.
A knock at the door startled her from her thoughts. Jessamyn’s heart skipped, a flash of hope flaring that it might be Jerrick. But when she opened the door, she was met with a different, yet no less cherished, face.
"Isadora!" Jessamyn exclaimed, sweeping the younger woman into a tight embrace. The relief in holding her was palpable, and she found herself clinging to Isadora as if she might slip away.
Isadora returned the hug with equal fervor, her voice soft as she said, "I missed you, Milady. I’m sorry I didn’t come sooner."
Jessamyn’s heart ached at the apology. "No, don’t be sorry. You’ve been through so much, Isadora. I’m the one who should apologize for not being there when you needed me most."
Isadora pulled back slightly, her eyes shining with warmth. "You were there for me in more ways than you know, Milady. Your words, your belief in me—they gave me strength when I had none."
Jessamyn’s throat tightened with emotion. Isadora had always been kind, always seen the good in others. "Have you eaten? I can have something brought up—"
"I’m well-fed, Milady," Isadora interrupted gently, taking Jessamyn’s hand and leading her toward the bed. "His Grace told me you were resting, so I waited until you woke."
They sat together, Isadora leaning against Jessamyn’s shoulder as if drawing comfort from the simple closeness. It was a rare moment of peace amidst the chaos of their lives, and Jessamyn cherished it.
She stroked Isadora’s hair absently, her mind drifting back to the hardships the young woman had faced.
"Did you see Bernard? How is he holding up?" Jessamyn asked, her voice tinged with concern.
Isadora nodded. "He’s doing better than I expected. You were right, Milady—he was in safe hands. It’s still hard for him to accept what’s happened regarding his mother, but about other things, I think he’s finding his way."
"And you? How are you doing?" Jessamyn squeezed her hand. "I was going to tell you the truth sooner, but I wanted your brothers to reveal it themselves. They seemed to have missed their chance..."
Isadora blinked, a moment of surprise flickering in her eyes before she smiled, the expression soft and knowing. "I had my suspicions, but it was still a shock to learn that William and Jerrick are my brothers. It explains a lot, though." She chuckled lightly. "One brother who dotes on me endlessly and another who teases me mercilessly—I suppose I’m blessed, after all."
Jessamyn’s heart warmed at Isadora’s acceptance. "Will you stop calling me ’Milady’ now, at least? We’re family."
But Isadora shook her head stubbornly, her smile widening. "Never. You’ll always be My Lady, even if I found out I’m Jerrick’s mother."
Jessamyn couldn’t help but laugh, gently pinching Isadora’s cheeks. "You’re impossible, you know that?"
Isadora beamed, and for a moment, Jessamyn saw the same lively girl she had once known, now tempered by a strength and maturity earned through hardship. "You’ve grown so much, Isadora. I’m proud of you. You’ve faced darkness and come through stronger than ever."
Isadora’s expression sobered as she nodded. "There were moments when I thought I wouldn’t survive it, Milady. But it’s for the best that you weren’t with me then. When the darkness took hold, all I could see was blood. I wouldn’t have known a friend from a foe. I’m glad Jerrick was there to protect you."
Jessamyn felt a pang of guilt at the thought of Isadora battling her demons alone, but she was also relieved. Isadora’s strength was undeniable, and Jessamyn could see that she had found a measure of peace despite the horrors she’d faced.
"I’m just relieved that Bernard is adjusting," Jessamyn said softly. "The transformation... it’s something none of us could have predicted."
Isadora’s gaze turned contemplative. "He’s accepted it, Milady. He’s stronger than I ever imagined, and with time, he’ll learn to control it. We’ll all find our way, one step at a time."
Jessamyn nodded, her heart swelling with pride for both Isadora and Bernard. They had endured so much, yet they still stood strong, united by bonds that even fate’s cruelty couldn’t sever.
