Chapter 287: Isadora’s Wedding

It was the day of Bernard and Isadora’s wedding, a day filled with joy, anticipation, and the promise of new beginnings. Jessamyn couldn’t contain her excitement.

The night before, she barely slept, her mind abuzz with thoughts of the ceremony, the celebrations, and the happiness it would bring to those she loved. Isadora was not just Jerrick’s sister but also someone Jessamyn held dear, almost like a daughter.

Early that morning, Jessamyn left for Aurelia Castle, determined to be by Isadora’s side as she prepared for the most important day of her life. She brought along ten carriages brimming with gifts, all thoughtfully selected to honor Isadora and the union she was about to enter.

After all, as Jerrick’s wife, it was both her right and her pleasure to shower Isadora with the finest treasures.

Jerrick had been by her side almost constantly for the past week, though his thoughts seemed distant. His brow was often furrowed in contemplation, and though Jessamyn had tried to engage him in conversation, she sensed his mind was occupied with the looming uncertainties of the upcoming war.

She respected his silence, offering him space as they both navigated the weight of their responsibilities.

As they made their way to Aurelia Castle, Jessamyn leaned against Jerrick’s broad shoulder—the same shoulder marked by her bite. He stared out of the window, lost in thought. The sunlight filtering through the trees danced across his features, casting shadows that mirrored the complexity of his emotions.

When Jessamyn took his hand in hers, it brought him back to the present. He turned to her, the softness returning to his eyes as he pressed a tender kiss to her forehead.

"Your little sister is getting married to your most loyal knight. Isn’t that wonderful?" she said, her voice a mix of laughter and sentimentality.

Jerrick hummed in agreement, though his smile was tinged with melancholy. "It truly is a joyous occasion," he murmured, "but you didn’t have to come this early. You should have rested longer."

His voice carried a note of concern, knowing full well that Isadora had an entire entourage to assist her. But Jessamyn, ever the loving and attentive woman, had insisted on being there herself.

"I couldn’t possibly stay away. I need to ensure everything is perfect, that she’s as happy as she can be today," Jessamyn replied with a wistful smile. "It feels like I’m marrying off my own daughter."

Her heart fluttered with a mix of pride and bittersweetness. She had watched Isadora grow from a spirited child into the confident woman who now stood on the brink of becoming a wife. Jessamyn couldn’t help but feel a surge of maternal affection as she imagined Isadora taking this new step in life.

Jerrick squeezed her hand, his thumb brushing gently over her knuckles. "Try to get some rest until we reach the castle," he said in that soothing tone he reserved only for her. He could have easily carried her to the castle himself, but he knew she needed the comfort and serenity of the carriage to gather her strength for the day ahead.

As the convoy approached Aurelia Castle, the sight that greeted them was nothing short of breathtaking. The grand fortress was adorned with elaborate floral arrangements, swathes of silk in shades of deep gold and ivory, and banners fluttering in the breeze, each one bearing the emblem of the noble families that would soon be united.

The castle’s towering spires gleamed under the morning sun, casting long shadows over the lush gardens below. Strings of delicate lanterns hung from trellises, promising to light up the night with a warm, festive glow.

The atmosphere was already alive with celebration. The wedding band played joyous melodies, filling the air with music that echoed through the courtyard. The roads leading to the castle were lined with guests, all dressed in their finest attire, eager to witness the union of two beloved souls.

As Jerrick’s convoy rolled in, attendants rushed forward to help unload the carriages laden with gifts. The servants bowed low as Jessamyn and Jerrick descended from their carriage, and all eyes were on them as they made their way into the castle.

At the gates, William was waiting, his face alight with happiness. His usual stern demeanor had given way to a wide smile that radiated genuine joy. However, Jessamyn’s cheerfulness dimmed when she noticed Elena standing beside William.

Though Elena’s presence soured her mood slightly, Jessamyn paid her no mind and continued forward, determined not to let anything dampen this special day. William, ever observant, noticed Jessamyn’s slight but chose not to dwell on it. He knew better than to let Elena’s presence interfere with the festivities, though the tension was palpable.

Inside, the air buzzed with excitement as the preparations for the ceremony reached a fever pitch. Jessamyn wasted no time and went directly to Isadora’s chambers. She was delighted to find the bride calm, radiant, and brimming with joy.

There was no sign of pre-wedding jitters, no anxious fidgeting—only the serene glow of a woman deeply in love. Jessamyn’s heart swelled with happiness. Isadora’s face shone with a contentment that could only come from knowing she had chosen the right man.

"I wish you all the happiness in the world, Isadora," Jessamyn said warmly as she kissed Isadora’s forehead. "May you and Bernard have a hundred years of bliss and a hundred children to fill your home with laughter."

Isadora chuckled, a soft blush tinting her cheeks. "A hundred children, Milady? That’s a bit much, don’t you think?"

Jessamyn laughed. "Not at all! A home should be filled with love and life."

Isadora’s eyes sparkled with mischief. "Have you had a chance to give Bernard the ’talk’ yet? William’s too scared, and Jerrick’s too proud to do it. I was hoping you’d be the one to set him straight."

Jessamyn raised an eyebrow in surprise. "You want me to threaten your groom on your wedding day?" she asked with a playful grin.

Isadora nodded eagerly. "If my father were here, he’d do it."

Jessamyn couldn’t help but laugh. "You’re a clever woman, Isadora. You chose a good man. Bernard adores you; there’s no need for threats. He’ll cherish you with all his heart, I’m certain of it."

The conversation took a somber turn when Isadora sighed wistfully. "I wish Cordelia were here," she murmured, sadness creeping into her voice.

"I received a letter from her," Jessamyn whispered softly. "The physician advised against travel. It seems she has important news."

Isadora’s eyes widened in realization. "You mean... she’s expecting? Already?"

Jessamyn nodded with a warm smile. "Yes, it seems she’s confirmed her pregnancy. It’s good timing; the kingdom needs stability now more than ever. Let’s hope it’s a prince."

After the final preparations, the wedding procession moved to the nearby temple. The streets were lined with people eager to offer their blessings to the couple as they passed. Jessamyn’s heart felt full as she saw the joy radiating from Isadora and Bernard.

But even amidst the happiness, there was a shadow—Bernard’s mother was absent.

Jessamyn knew the woman’s mind had shattered after the loss of her daughter. Now, she spent her days staring blankly at walls, lost in her grief. There was a time when Jessamyn would have pitied her, but that pity had long turned into a cold resentment. After all, the woman’s actions had caused untold suffering.

Isadora’s expression darkened slightly when she realized her future mother-in-law would not be attending. "I will never forgive her for what she did to Bernard," she said quietly.

Jessamyn didn’t argue. Some wounds never heal, and some sins are too deep to wash away with time. Perhaps that woman deserved to rot in her own bitterness, a fitting end for someone who had brought nothing but misery to those she was supposed to love.

As the ceremony began, Jessamyn pushed those dark thoughts away, focusing instead on the joy that filled the temple as two souls were bound together in love and hope for a brighter future.
